White River Fly Fishing

Forget The Recession, Lets Go Fishing

Here's my top 5 Western States, spring "Bait Fishing holes" for Trout.

I'm not a fancy fly fisherman; I've tried it and just can't get the knack. I like to sit, relax and enjoy the surroundings while I fish. I also like to keep and eat what I catch.

I based my top spots on these factors; great fishing, great views and the ease of getting there.

So here goes;

Owyhee River.

Spring Fishing (before April), on the Owyhee River, in Southern Oregon is fantastic. This 10-mile stretch of river below the Owyhee Dam is just 30 miles from my home in Ontario, Oregon, or about 80 miles out of Boise. So here's a little local knowledge.

You may be saying, "This is a famous Fly Fishing spot"? Yes it is a favorite "Trophy Brown Trout" haunt for Fly Fishermen, but here's a little known secret, it is also open to "Bait Fishermen" and a skilled fisherman with bait can land more of these big Browns than the fly fishermen.

This river has a rustic beauty all it's own, especially in early spring when the sparkling white snow still clinging to the valleys and hillsides. The river is low and slow this time of year and you can easily see the monster Browns rising for the bugs floating on the surface. There are hundreds of these Browns in every hole. You can easily catch a huge Brown Trout here, ranging from 2 lbs to 20 lbs and Rainbows 20 inches up.

Be advised you must immediately return the huge Browns to the river, but you can keep and eat any Rainbow Trout or Bass you catch. This is why there are so many monster Browns in these holes, they never leave the river; they just get bigger and smarter.

Legal "Bait Fishing" is allowed here, but you must have a thick skin, as you will get looks from the purest (Fly Guys) as they pass.  This river is very clean and free of the Lead Poisons prevalent throughout the Western Rivers, so you can safely eat the red meated Rainbows and the occasional Bass.

You can easily drive in and camp, right beside the river, free of charge. Be sure to pack out all you bring in and keep it clean. Just set up your chairs and do some relaxing "Bait Fishing" or you can put on your waders and chase the Browns up and down the river. Wading is simple along this shallow easily accessible river.

Bring your four-wheeler or canoe and easily traverse the long winding riverbanks. Make sure you pack a lunch and have plenty of bait, as the nearest store is 10 to 15 miles away.

Tip; try a Night Crawler and Split Shot, drifted in the current.

Horsethief Reservoir:

In late spring try Horsethief Reservoir, just 10 miles above Cascade, Idaho.

This little lake is my favorite spot, spring, summer or fall. In the springtime, (Late April) right after "Ice-Off", the trout fishing is amazing. You can limit out in a hour with catch-able Rainbows from 8 to 14 inches, with the occasional 20 incher.

But that's not all, let me tell you a true story; In the early summer my friend, Scotty, and I, went to Horsethief for a day trip, traveling out of Cascade, where I was living. We set up right beside the Dam, our usual spot.

While lounging on a grassy bank, beside the pristine clear blue water lake, I was looking out at the tree lined far shoreline. Suddenly, a rush of waves and a dark blur in the water at my feet startled me. It took me a few minutes for me to realize that it was an Otter, rushing in to steal my stringer of fish. Sure enough the Otter had swiftly rushed in and stole my metal stringer and the five Rainbows caught that morning.

After calming down, I looked out across the lake and to my amazement, not 50 yards out, was an entire family of Otters frolicking and happily munching on our mornings catch. I've always wondered, "Was it legal to catch another five fish"?

A little later on, my friend Scotty was busy chasing a wild ring necked duck away from his tackle box, the duck kept trying to steal his bait. The ringed necked duck just wouldn't go away, he hung around all day, might have been because I tossed him tidbits every once in awhile.

We settled back down and caught a few more "Bows". I had replaced my stringer, making sure to tie it tight. I then laid back and was gazing up at a pair of Osprey's floating above us in the blue cloudless sky.

I was just slipping off for a nap when the water ten feet in front of us exploded, spraying both Scotty and me with water. An Osprey had dived into the lake, right in front of us, arose and flew away with a nice trout grasped tightly in its talons.

It was a special "wildlife day" that morning, and the experience was really unforgettable. Nature's at it's best is usually there every time I visit this wonderful lake. I've seen Deer, Elk, Moose and even a white Wolf at this high mountain retreat. This great fishing hole is easy to get to and sports many lakeside campgrounds. It has majestic scenery and the fishing is peaceful, quite and fruitful.

Tip; use Rainbow Power Bait, a small slip weight and a No.14 gold treble.

June Lake "Opening Day"

You'll find it in the High Sierras 50 Miles north of Bishop, CA.

"Opening Day" is the last Saturday in April. When I lived in Southern California, we never missed an opening day in the Sierras. We loved the excitement of the moment as thousands of California fishermen rushed to stake out their favorite holes.

June Lake is one of these opening day hotspots. It's another gorgeous high mountain lake with crystal clear water and forested banks. On "Opening Day" June Lake's Rainbows are huge, ranging from 12 to 30 inches. I've caught 6 to 8lb lunkers from shore on opening day.

One opening weekend a group of us went up a day early to stake out our favorite spot, the park at the south end of the lake. In order to beat the crowds to this spot we slept out on the park grass next to our set up chairs. This was working out well except for the cold, April in the High Sierras brings below freezing weather at night. We were hiding down deep in our bags when the park sprinklers came on, washing us out and back to our camper to dry off and warm up. All except my son Joshua, he was sleeping in a waterproof down army mummy-bag. He slept through the entire watering and when we went back out we saw a solid sheet of ice over his entire bag, but he said he was warm inside.

That morning when the flare went off, we had our spot and began to fish. We caught several lunkers of 5 to 8 pounds. We entered them into the lakes fishing derby, but the contest winner for the day was over 10 pounds.

Tip; Try a slow retrieve with a white marshmallow on a No.12 treble with split shot.

Blue Mesa Reservoir

Near Gunnison, Colorado; at the South end under the highway bridge, in May.

May is absolutely a great time to fish this lake; if you're a shore fisherman you'll love the spot under the bridge at the Gunnison end near the rivers inlet. I've caught my limit of large Rainbows every time I've fished it in May.  Occasionally a shore fisherman ties into one of the huge Lake Trout inhabiting this lake, they can go up to 50 pounds.

My son Jeremy at 7 years old, caught a 4lb Rainbow under this bridge with a child's fishing pole, he brought it in all by himself.

In May and late summer, you can drive right up to the bridge along an access road cutting off the highway, but don't try it in June. In June the rains make the road a bog, I know, it cost me $100 to get towed out. You still can get there in June, just park off the highway and climb down the rocky side of the bridge.

Toss out green or rainbow Power-Bait next to the bridge pylons and wait. Watch your poll they hit hard.

Eleven-Mile Canyon

You'll find this canyon 70 miles west of Colorado Springs on the Upper Platte River.

This stretch of canyon is breathtaking; the river winds eleven miles up through the canyon until it ends at the Dam at Eleven Mile Reservoir.  This stretch of river is so beautiful that my wife and I have decided to have our ashes placed in these waters when we go to that fishing hole in the sky.

There is plenty of "drive in camp spots" along the river. The fish are usually smaller pan-sized Trout, but are plentiful and then there is that occasional lunker. You can also catch monster 40" pike that roam these waters.

What I like most about fishing these waters is that on a warm spring day you can hop over to one of the mammoth rocks in the river and drift a "Colorado Orange Indicator" and meal worm along the current and watch it drift for a 100 yards or until you get a strike.

When my youngest son, Jeremy, was a tot, I would tie a rope to his life vest and then around my waist. Off we would go rock hopping and fishing all day long.

All the waters in this general area are great in the spring, but if you've never visited the Platte River in Eleven Mile Canyon you're missing something special.

So forget about this recession, go fishing.

Spring fishing season is finally on the way
Dr. Bogus Is it spring yet? Not yet, but we have finally had a break in the weather and we can close our eyes and dream. There are many harbingers of spring, the robins, more hours of daylight, maple trees flowering, dandelions yellowing up the lawns, that yellow dusting of springtime pollen and the greening of the first bushes and trees – and oh yes, opening of our fishing piers.

How to Fish for Lake Trout : How to Choose Fishing Line for Trout Fishing

Line Trout Fishing

Trout Fly Line

i have just started fly fishing and i am after a good intermediate line?

which make is best and where do i buy it from.....ps. i am trout fishing in sheffield, yorkshire and not salmon in canada!!!

Hi I have tried quite a few different makes of fly lines and personally I find the Cortland range very good and if you want a very good clear intermediate I would go go the 333 Pro Clear one as its a good beginner's line which is easy to cast. it comes in w/f 6,7,8 and costs around the £34.00 mark, I know its not the cheapest but I find it a very good line for small / medium sized still waters and you can buy them through most retail outlets including the mail order ones but if you shop around you can get some very good deals, I fish mainly Rutland, Grafham, Ravensthorp, and waters like Lechlade and Elinor and I don't have many problems with it including little to no line memory.
I hope you find one you like and carry on fishing oh and by the way if you ever get a chance to do some float tubing then do it as its the most fun you can have with a pair of chest waders on !!!!! especially when you catch a 2lb trout and it tows you round the lake !

Fly Fishing, Beginners Guide to the Types of Fishing Flies

In fly fishing, flies are generally divided into four types of artificial flies. (Flies are also called lures in some countries.)

They are:

1       Dry flies

2 Wet flies

3 Nymphs

4 Streamers

The categories of flies can cross into each other.  There are no real strict guidelines for classifying the flies as depending on the countries, traditions of terminology.  (Some anglers also classify emerges as another category of flies. These sit partially underneath the surface and partially on top of the water, imitating things like newly emerging mayflies.)

Dry flies
sit on the top of the water.  They imitate insects sitting on the surface like mayflies, midges, caddis flies, beetles, grasshoppers, spiders and spinners to name a few types. They can be fished still, drifting with the current or wind, or fished with small twitches or rapid pulls. Using dry flies can be exhilarating experience as you can see the fish strike the fly.   Dries are used seasonally in lakes and rivers and are generally effective when fish are actively feeding on insects on top of the water.  Dry flies are normally made of light buoyant materials or are tied with hackles that help the fly sit on the water surface.  A floatant spray or gel is applied to the dry fly to make it buoyant.  A couple of false casts will also help dry it.

Wet flies
as the name suggest that the fly is fished in the water, either.  The flies can imitate small baitfish, leeches, frogs, crawdad's and swimming insects.  Wets can be fished just under the surface with dead drifts, slow twitches up to fast retrieves.  Some times a take will occur as the fly is sinking.  For getting wets deep down, weighted or bead heads are effective, especially when combined with intermediate or sinking fly lines.

Nymphs
are a very effective and a common world wide food source in rivers and lakes.  Nymphs can be fished on the drop, drifting, and slow to medium retrieves, either just under the surface or deep down. They imitate the underwater stage of insects like mayfly nymphs, stoneflies and damselfly nymphs. A good portion of a trout’s diet consists of nymphs in most seasons and waters. A long leader and tippet is effective for nymphing, especially in clear or over fished waters.

Streamers are bigger wet flies imitating baitfish like minnows, sculpins and bigger appetizing food.  Streamers usually work best near the bottom and are generally quickly retrieved for salmon, bigger trout and also for saltwater fish. Bigger flies like streamers, may also result in a bigger catch, although don’t be surprised when your four inch streamer lands a small twelve inch trout.  Artificial streamers can be colorful and have a mixture of assorted fly tying materials.

Dry flies, wets, nymphs and streamers are all effective in the right environment. The secret to getting the most out your fishing is to use different techniques and test all the time. Don’t be afraid to try different types of flies and patterns, especially if the fishing is slow. So no matter what country you live in and regardless of how you classify your flies, just make sure you have various types of flies to cover all fly fishing conditions and fish. Now you are ready to catch the big one!

Flathead Lake Trout
POLSON, Mont. (AP) - The Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes are increasing the payouts for this year's Flathead Lake trout fishing tournament in an effort to entice more anglers and reduce the lake trout population. The state and tribal co-management plan for the lake expires this year, and the tribes want to reduce the number of lake trout by 80,000 in 2011. They're considering a

Trout Fishing

There are many fly fishing techniques. There are those that are considered to be more traditional while others are modern. For those who love angling, you will discover the kind of method that works for you as you fish. The fly fishing techniques can be affected or influenced by different factors like the water, materials and many others. The following is an overview of some of the most common techniques that are popular in the world of fly fishing. There are very many sources of information on methods of fly fishing. For example, you can go online or buy relevant DVDs. You can also take lessons that will teach major techniques.

Methods Or Techniques Of Fly Fishing

Tenkara fishing can be classified as a traditional fly fishing technique. It was used by the Japanese to capture fish. It was mainly used to fish in small streams for trout. It is popular with fresh-water fishermen in Japan even today. This technique only requires the use of a rod and a Tenkara line. Fishing in cold water is also popular. For this fly fishing technique, special shoes or boots have to be worn. They are commonly known as waders. They enable fishermen to maintain grip and balance. Personal flotation devises also come in handy to ensure that the angler is safe. With the above fly fishing gear, a fisherman can fish comfortably. There is nothing like comfort for anglers.

Dry fly trout fishing is also a pretty common fly fishing technique. This is where a line and flies are used. They will float on water to attract the fish. This technique is suitable in small clear streams. Anglers are required to be very keen so as to lift the line as soon as there is a trout in sight. It is a pretty interesting fly fishing technique which is highly effective when all factors are just right. Still water trout fishing is also common. This kind is suitable for lakes and deep waters.

For salt water fly-fishing, there are particular techniques employed to make it a success. The heavier tackle fly fishing technique is used. There are different salt water species of fish that can be captured using this fly fishing technique. They include tuna, Dorado, striped bass, sailfish, salmon, marlin and others. There are many aspects to different techniques used in fly fishing. What is needed is to master the kind of water and environment you are in and employ a technique that will work.

Rod Reel
What would be a better fishing rod/reel combo for trout fishing?

I am debating whether to use my light action 5'6 storm fishing reel/rod. Or my R2F Southbend fishing combo which is medium action 6'6. Both have 5.2:1 reels.

I think the 6' 6" would be overkill for trout , but if you are fishing lake trout that might need a little more backbone and length to wear the fish down. In addition for the light action see if you can find a replacement spool for that storm reel and have it prespooled to take with you. 1 spool 2 pound and 1 spool 4 pound then you if the 2 pound proves too thin, you are ready in a heart beat, changed and back fishing in three minutes. Take both rods and have two spools for the southbend as well. Then put 6 pound and 8 pound on each spool for that one.

There are many ways to fish for trout, but few are more effective than bait fishing. Let's take a look at some tips to help you be more effective when bait fishing for these multi-colored beauties. We can sum it up in three easy steps.

When done properly, which this article will help you with, bait fishing for trout is also an art in the manner that some other fishing methods are. If you can follow all of these methods you will do fine. All of which will make you a much more efficient and effective trout angler.

Use light fishing line. When bait fishing for trout you want to use fishing line that's as light as you feel comfortable with. I personally use four pound test monofilament when bait fishing. Actually four pound test is that I use for all of my trout fishing. Six pound test is okay as well, but anything heavier than this should not be employed. You want your bait to be what the trout stay focused on, and the heavier your fishing line is the more apt the trout are to see it. I suppose you can guess what happens if the trout detect your line? Yep, they are much less apt to bite.

Use a bait bag. When bait fishing, many times that bait is live worms, and when using live worms as bait you need to have and efficient and effective way to carry said worms. The simplest way to accomplish this task is to use a bait bag. With a bait bag your worms are always at your fingertips waiting to be used and you'll never have to search for your bait again. This simple act, gives you more time with your line in the water (where the trout are) rather than out of the water while you look for your worms.

Use the right kind of hooks. Gang hooks are the most effective way to present bait while fishing. This is especially true in the case of live worms. These hooks are simply a pair of small hooks tied in tandem, which enable you to present bait in a realistic manner. Always use gang hooks when bait fishing for trout, or any other species of fish for that matter.

When it comes to bait fishing for trout, these three tips will have you much more effective. Use one or all of them on your next fishing excursion and find out for yourself just how great these tips are.

When done properly, which this article will help you with, bait fishing for trout is as much of an art form as any manner of fishing has ever been proclaimed to be. Below you will find three main points to keep in mind, all of which will make you a much more efficient and effective trout angler.

Use light fishing line. When bait fishing for trout you want to use fishing line that's as light as you feel comfortable with. I personally use four pound test monofilament when bait fishing. Gang hooks are the most effective way to present bait while fishing. This is especially true in the case of live worms. These hooks are simply a pair of small hooks tied in tandem, which enable you to present bait in a realistic manner. This makes a huge difference when bait fishing for trout. Of course, the more you can make your bait look natural in the water, will allow you to get the most strikes. Anything that doesn't look natural will spook the trout.

Fishing is fun and an art. When you do it right, you can have such a great time. Take these simple steps and you will soon find that you are dominating the streams.

About the Author:

I have fished Montana for over four decades and even have had conversations with legend Bud Lilly. I have fished with the author who completed George Brook's final book, Rand Oslund. I've fished the Gallatin, Madison, Jefferson, Missouri, Big Horn, Smith River, Yellowstone, spring creeks, creeks in Yellowstone National Park and pretty much everywhere in the State, including several high mountain lakes.

Of course, these are all very good secrets, but some of these secrets I'm just going to have to keep to myself. Consider this a test taste of some of the fine trout fishing locations in central Montana and north central Wyoming. There are many more, but that would require a book, stories and more detail.

There is a beautiful Red Lodge, Montana real estate development called the Spires at Red Lodge. We came here because it is some of the last, best priced resort real estate in the Rocky Mountain region.

Right through the middle of downtown Red Lodge there is great fishing in the Main fork of Rock Creek early spring, late summer and in the fall (it is a bit high in early summer). Strip black streamers or use stone nymphs like a bitch creek. Bead head nymphs do pretty well, too. There are lot's of small to medium sized rainbows and browns in Rock Creek and the further toward Roberts you go, the bigger the fish get.

Just a 20 minute drive to the west from The Spires at Red Lodge development along U.S. Highway 78 in Red Lodge is Roscoe, Montana home to the Grizzly Bar. Stop there on the way back from fishing, not on the way up. Go about 4 miles out of Roscoe towards East Rosebud Lake until you cross a wooden bridge. You can park there and walk down, or walk up. Dry flies if they are rising and nymphs and streamers if they aren't. Streamers will be more successful on cloudy days.

There is a lake called Arch Lake that is a boulder-strewn 2,500 foot plus hot foot (not trail) hike straight up out of the East Rosebud Valley. There are some monstrous cutthroat in this lake many of them don't see an artificial fly or lure more than once every few years.

Further down the road to the northwest is also some great fishing. If you've got a raft or a kick boat you are going to love the Stillwater River. It is a great April/May and then mid July through October, fishing river and has much less pressure than Montana's western rivers.

In the spring time head 60 miles south to Cody and Newton Reservoir for some great big fish stories. Little flies on top and leeches down below, whatever they are hitting on. The surface activity can be a ball. Try the far side in waders all the way away from the parking lot and wade out in the weeds.

The legendary Bighorn is only about 90 minutes from downtown Red Lodge which makes some of the best tailwater fishing in all of Montana really accessible as a day trip, which is pretty cool.

The Bighorn River is only about 90 minutes away from Red Lodge across the Crow Indian reservation from Pryor, Montana and is probably one of the best tail water damn fisheries in the State, but it is usually quite crowded (I say this tongue in cheek because it is crowded by Westerners standards but not by many others).

South central Montana has some of the best fishing and Red Lodge real estate is some of the most reasonale mountain real estate anywhere in the west. Authentic Victorian mining town in the middle of a recreational Mecca.

Fly Line Trout
stream trout fishing question about bait?

ok now i know where to find trouts, but the question is, what is the best bait for that? also... i think this stream holds only small ones, so wouldn't the fly kind of in line spinner bait little bit too big for them?

trout worms for live bait work
however for hard baits, i would use inline spinners and spoons. For spoons, i would almost use either an all silver or all gold spoon.

Fly Line Trout article

by Bob Smith

Talk with any fisherman and they'll give you their opinion of the best bait to use for fishing. It comes down to this, if you've had luck with a certain kind of bait, it's going to be the best.

Crawfish was my bait of choice when I was in Missouri. You just couldn't beat them for trout or a small mouth bass. But I haven't had much luck finding crawfish in other places. But I will say this, if you can find these little crawdads as they are called in Louisiana, buy and use them. Crawfish are a great way of attracting fish.

I like using live bait when I can. Live minnows are probably one of the most popular live bait fish around. But unless you're working from a boat, it's a pain lugging the bait bucket.

Live worms have long been the subject of comedy routines. People just don't know how to put a worm on a hook. When a gang hook is used a worm stretches out and looks natural. The fish don't get suspicious and you catch more fish.

Some people won't have anything to do with live bait. Don't know if they are squeamish or just lazy. Really doesn't matter. Some of the newer synthetic bait is just amazing. And in some instances I can say the synthetic baits are coming darn close to live bait. Now synthetic bait comes in every shape, form and bait you can think of, and some you probably haven't thought of. Synthetic bait offers convenience and the ability to pick up and go fishing without having to stopping by a bait shop.

While there's all sorts of bait types, it really doesn't make a big deal. You need to get out and fish, not spend time just talking about fishing. Without practice fishing and I mean getting out there and fishing, you're not going to catch anything. So get out there and get fishing. And don't forget to let me know what you caught.

About the Author:

People from all over the country will try and take in the fly fishing in East Tennessee at least once in their life and fly fishing in East Tennessee has enough prime spots filled with the most desirable fly fishing trophy fish you have seen almost anywhere in the country. The wooded areas in Tennessee make for some great secluded spots and make fly fishing in East Tennessee a great experience. Set aside some time when you decide to go fly fishing in East Tennessee because with all of the seclusion and great fishing you will find when you go fly fishing in East Tennessee you will probably never want to leave. But they would prefer if you did leave after a while so that other people can also enjoy fly fishing in East Tennessee.

The Watauga River is a great place to go fly fishing in East Tennessee because it is considered by those in Tennessee to be a very bountiful and secluded place to fish. The Watauga River starts near the Wilbur Dam in Elizabethton, Tennessee and winds its way through the beautiful woods of Eastern Tennessee. Among fishermen and people in the know in and around Tennessee the Watauga River is well know for its Rainbow and Brown trout fishing where the river is full of game for any fisherman. You may have to deal with some people swimming in some of the publicly accessible swimming sections of the river but most of the river's 16 mile stretch is only accessible by boat and that is just perfect for the person looking to cash in on fly fishing in East Tennessee on the Watauga River.

More Spots And Fish Variety

The South Holston River is also a well known spot for fly fishing in East Tennessee. This also begins near a dam as it starts at the South Holston Dam near Bluff City, Tennessee. The South Holston River is a nationally recognized trout fishery and it has been known to hold more than its fair share of trophy trout for the sport fishermen that come to check out what it has to offer.

With other prime locations such as Doe Creek, Stoney Creek, and Laurel Fork Creek Eastern Tennessee has something for every fisherman whether you are looking for trophy trout or you are looking to catch something you can have for dinner later that night. Give fly fishing in East Tennessee a try and you won't be sorry.

Montana may be thought of for many things considered part of the early west, as well as being one of five states to house the Rocky Mountains. However, fly fishing in Montana is legendary among devoted anglers. With the Yellowstone River winding through the south central part of the state, its clear and often cold waters are home to some of the largest trophy trout in the state. Additionally, passing through Hayden Valley, the river's scenery can sometimes make people forget that they are fly fishing in Montana.

Fantastic fishing is also reported in the Gallatin River and the Madison River as well as in many of the clear, crisp mountain lakes that are filled with the melted snow runoff from the mountains. The scenery invites the tourists but the trout fishing lures the angler to try their hand at fly fishing in Montana. With the availability of various fishing expeditions, folks can have their choice of how they want to approach their experience.

While many will remain on the banks of rivers such as the Big Horn River or even the tumultuous waters of the Missouri River, others may choose to wade in closer to the fish. As the rivers course through the valleys, their depth often changes suddenly and the river bottom they were standing on while fly fishing in Montana is suddenly neck deep or over their head. Many choose to use kayaks or rubber rafts as they fish the waters.

Higher Mountain Lakes Offer Different Challenges

When fly fishing in Montana the lakes in the upper elevations, above 9,000 feet offer some of the clearest waters for sight casting, but the trout in those areas are generally under a foot long. Most areas in these lakes are catch and release only and for catching trophies while fly fishing in Montana lakes at lower elevations or the major rivers offer a better opportunity.

Those who are unfamiliar with fly fishing in Montana will be better served by hiring a guide for their first outing or so, especially when fishing in unknown territories. As they follow the fish up or down a river, it may be easy to become disoriented and quickly lose their way back to the starting point on the river.

The state may also be known for many forms of outdoor sports such as big game hunting, but fly fishing in Montana is a well-known pastime for anglers around the country. In late spring the rush will be on to hook onto the trophy that they can brag about for years to come.

How much you appreciate the splendor of the outdoors will help decide which of the many makes and streams you visit for fly fishing Rocky Mountain trout. With over 50 lakes to choose from, being fed by about 150 streams, there is no end to the options for fly fishing Rocky Mountain waters. The mountains carve borders and seemingly endless scenery as they course through five Midwestern states.

The type of rod you use for fly fishing Rocky Mountain lakes will probably be a lightweight rod with significant bending at the tip. In the high mountain lakes and streams the trout tend to run smaller and even a number one road with light line can feel as though a one-pound trout is putting up a good fight. While most of the lakes are protected from the wind, when the breeze does start to pick up you will want a heavier rod and line to help your casting. A number five weight rod is probably the heaviest you will want to carry and use only in case of higher wind.

Most of the anglers fly fishing Rocky Mountain streams and lakes find trout feeding along the edge of the shoreline where they can see the fish as they head towards the fly. Most anglers claim the best trout fishing is available in some of the higher lakes as it is more like cast and catch than cast and hope.

Understanding The Flies Used In Different States

When fly fishing Rocky Mountain lakes, it is important to know what the native insects are to a particular state. Additionally, the time of year and the location in which you are fishing will be key to using the right fly for the right fish. Bushy, dry flies seem to work best on streams while lake trout seem to look for floating mayflies throughout most of the year.

When approaching a lake fly fishing Rocky Mountain waters, travel slowly and you should be able to see the fish swimming in their selected areas. Unlike fish in rapid streams, those in the lake tend to swim in a specific pattern between the center of the lake and the shore. most of their food will be gathered near the shore and you should spend a few minutes recognizing the swimming pattern before dropping a fly onto the water.

Once you understand where the fish is swimming around, wait until it is moving away from the shore and then drop the fly on the water on it anticipated return trip. If it refuses the bait, wait until it swims away before pulling the line and offering it a second time.
