Fishing reel guide

There are diverse sizes and shapes of fishing reels that can decide on the right kind that you need is a very hopeless job. If you happen to be familiar with the different kinds of fishing reels, then your task of finding what you need will get more painless and simpler. Five groups mainly make up fishing reels: the open faced fishing reels, closed face spinning reels, fly fishing reels, bait-casting reels, and electric fishing reels. In this piece of writing, the open faced spinning reels, bait-casting reels, and closed face spinning reels will be dealt with. In picking the kind of reel, there is a requirement to think over about two ideas. The first thing that you need to mull over is the level of your ability. The second thing that you ought to mull over is the type of fishing where you are going to use the reel. If you happen to be a beginning fisherman, then you ought to take into consideration getting a closed face reel because it can make your job easier and save some of your money.

The simplest type of reel that you can operate is the closed face reel which calls for a beginner kind of dexterity. Its spool contains the line, the covered mechanical parts, and a button on top or at the back of the reel that can be pressed at the start of the cast and at the ending. Because the line has a lid, then there are small chances of acquiring a counterattack. This kind of reel is just right for children who are just novices on fishing. The closed face reel is similar to a Snoopy Rod wherein the reel and rod are jointed in a single reel. For containing an easy process, the spinning reel can be utilized similar to the open faced reels. Once you became at composed with the closed face reel, you can eventually begin using the open faced reel. It contains a line that is curled onto a spool which has a bigger size and there is a different release. It also has a bail, a wire-like instrument that is situated at the front of the reel at just about on a eleven o'clock spot. Open face reels are made specially for lighter lines in the two to twelve pound test span and so a lot of anglers operate this kind of reel when they go for Finesse fishing. The final reel that is going to be conferred is the hardest kind of reel to learn how to use. This type of reel is known as the Bait Caster or the Level Wind reel for a few older anglers. You must have the right insight on how to cope with this type of reel. There is also a requirement to know about the a variety of masses that have an influence on the capability of the reel. Moreover, the mechanical components of the reel can be adjusted to suit the weight and wind conditions|The purpose of having different mechanical parts in the reel is to amend to the different weight and wind conditions that it can encounter. Once you have learned concerning how these types of reels are used, you can gain easiness in operating them. However, there are still occurrences that you must face horrible backlashes even though you try hard not to.

Best Saltwater Fly Rod, What is the Best Fly Rod for Saltwater?

Choosing the "Best Saltwater Fly Rod" is like picking out the best eating utensil.  A different tool will be needed for different situations.  These situations vary widely so there is a wide range of saltwater fly rods that will be better at times than others.  Size of fish is the biggest variable, but there are others that you will want to take into account before you invest in a saltwater fly rod.  At the bottom of this article is a link that will take you to a site where you can get recommended brands and models of the best saltwater fly rods.

What is difference between a Saltwater Fly Rod and Freshwater Fly Rod?

Before you choose what will be the best saltwater fly rod for your adventures, it is good to know the differences between a saltwater fly rod and a freshwater (standard) fly rod.  First of all, both will work in either situation as long as it is designed for the size of fish you are after.  One thing that is for sure is that you do not want to be under rodded ever, especially when saltwater fly fishing.  Typically, pound for pound, saltwater fish fight much harder than freshwater fish.  I have caught 2 pound saltwater fish that fought as hard as a 10 pound Rainbow Trout.  So when in doubt, go with a heavier weight rod.

Fast Action

One critical factor when choosing a rod that will be best for saltwater is to makes sure it is a "Fast Action" rod.  Basically this means that the fly rod will be quite stiff and will therefore deliver a lot of power.  This will also mean a tired shoulder at the end of the day, but there are many reasons for fast action rods.  Here are a few:

Wind: saltwater fly rods are built to combat the wind that is almost always prevalent when fishing in saltwater.

Distance: Fast action rods will deliver the most power to the line resulting in a further cast than with softer rods.

Flies: In most saltwater fly fishing situations, you will not be casting small bugs to rising fish.  Usually you will be casting heavy, wind catching bait fish imitations that are hard to cast.  That is when a stiff, fast action rod will help you pick that fly up out of the water and then cast it out a long ways.  With a soft rod, you will struggle to get it out of the water without stripping in a bunch of line, and then try to cast it!

Line:  A common scenario when saltwater fly fishing is using sink tips to get the fly to the fish.  Sinking line is much harder to cast than floating, therefore the fast action.

You are probably thinking these aspects are what you would like in a freshwater rod.  And yes, most saltwater rods make great freshwater rods for big fish.  Unfortunately many freshwater rods are not designed for what you will be faced with in the saltwater.

Fish Size

The best saltwater fly rod is determined by the size of fish you are after.  As mentioned earlier, saltwater fish tend to fight with a vengeance.  Therefore it is wise to go with a heavier weight rod.  For the most part, an 8wt (weight) is probably about as low as you will go.  Here is a generic list of some fish and the rod weight you will want to have:

8wt: Sierra Mackerel, Bonefish, Snook, Trout, Steelhead

10wt: Bonefish, Permit, Roosterfish, Dorado, Snook, Redfish, Salmon

12wt: Roosterfish, Dorado, Barracuda, Tuna, Sailfish

14wt: Tarpon, Sailfish, Marlin, Shark

Quality

In order for a rod to be the best saltwater fly rod, it must be good quality.  Just as important though, it must fit into your budget.  As quality goes up, price is right in front of it.  There are two things that I suggest for all rods when it comes to quality and price:

Go with the best fly rod you can afford.
Stick with the rods that offer an unconditional lifetime warranty.  For the most part, you will have to spend at least 0 to get a rod with a lifetime warranty, but trust me, it is worth it.  We all break rods sooner than later, so you might as well make this an investment for a life time.  Plus, you will regret buying anything less the quality of rod that is warranted, especially when casting to fish in saltwater.  All the rod makers that I suggest are very good with their warranties, and some even offer programs where you have a new rod in as little as a few days after a break.

Fly Line for Saltwater

It is not really crucial to have a specific line made for saltwater, although you will want to be ready for all situations.  That is why I recommend a fly line with interchangeable tips.  This way you can adapt and fish floating line if need be, or switch to one of many sink tips designed to sink at different rates.  Follow the link below and click on "Fly Lines" to get my specific recommendation on certain brands.

Conclusion:

There are many good fly rods to choose form, but an investment of this stature requires more than good, you want the best.  To get recommendations on the best saltwater fly rod, go to www.OnlineFlyFishingGuide.com/Best Saltwater Fly Rod and click on "Fly Rods" where we talk more about brands and models.  To see our recommendation on the best saltwater fly rod and other fly fishing gear click here: www.OnlineFlyFishingGuide.com/OnlineFlyFishingGearGuide

Maximizing Fly Fishing Tuition Expense

Fly fishing is a way of catching fish using artificial baits like flies. The baits can be made up of natural or synthetic materials. Catching fish like trout and salmon needs certain skills. These fishes are very delicious to eat so fishing them would be more than enjoyable. Throughout history man is known to fish. It is even considered to be one of the earliest jobs of human race. Aside from hunting and planting, the people of earlier times have known how to catch fish in the nearest body of water in their area of locality. The main reason for fishing is of course to have something to eat. However, nowadays, fishing in whatever form has become a hobby and sport. This means that classes are now available to those who are interested to learn. Fly fishing tuition could vary from institution to institution. There are also especial rates for beginners and advanced learners.

There are many things we need to learn in fly fishing. Things like which bait fits best in a certain aquatic territory and the special tools we need to use in a certain body of water. Fly fishing tuition would sometimes include the things we need to use during fly fishing. In some instances, we need to buy the equipments ourselves. To be able to enjoy it more, we need to be efficient in handling the materials we need to use. So fly fishing tuition would be worth the expense.

Most resorts are also providing lessons. The fly fishing tuition also differs with the type of lessons we get. If we want to learn alone, we can avail a one on one lesson. This type of program would help us learn at our own pace and without the distractions of other people. However, if we want to learn with other people, we can avail a group lesson. This way we get to experience learning to do it with our friends and strangers alike. It could also be a perfect bonding activity for the whole family. Summer vacation is a good time for the whole family to go to resorts and enroll in a course together. We can take our family there and learn how to catch fish using fly fishing strategies and techniques. The things that we do together as a family are oftentimes the things that we will treasure for the rest of our lives.

During classes for beginners we will learn the different techniques used in fly fishing in different aquatic habitats. This is because the difference in the area could mean a lot of variations like fishing in saltwater and freshwater. Fishing in saltwater could be done in the shore or in the middle of the sea using a boat. However, fishing in freshwater could be different and may require other materials like a proper wading boots to help us stay up in a slippery river. The fly fishing tuition we have to pay to learn all these things and more are worth the new knowledge and skills we acquire.

Before choosing a particular saltwater fly fishing reel it is decidedly very necessary that you identify the place where you will be doing your saltwater fly fishing. Different saltwater fly fishing reels are available depending on whether you plan to do your fishing close to the shore or out in the deep waters. As a matter of fact companies such as Daiwa have come out with their own line of products known as Steez which provide anglers with special reels which are ideally suited for use only to catch bass fish.

Light Weight Reels

You would of course do well to choose lighter weight saltwater fly fishing reels whenever you plan on angling close to the shore. Otherwise, you will also need to choose from different models of spinning reels including those that weigh about fewer than seven ounces and those that weigh more than seven ounces. A good such saltwater fly fishing reel should also be made of the appropriatecorrect material (preferably magnesium or titanium or composites that are light in weight) and which also incorporates corrosion resistant parts, particularlyits ball bearings which will prevent damage to the reel when the reel is plunged in saltwater.

When looking for different brands of saltwater fly fishing reels you would do well to take a look at those made by Penn Spinfisher. The biggest advantage to choosing these fishing reels is that they are able to totally withstand the uncompromising saltwater conditions and a balance rotor also helps to ensure ideal and steady performance at all times. It is also important to determine how well a saltwater fly fishing reel is able to stay aligned even under intense water pressure and the torque too should be good enough to allow you to reel in your catch without much difficulty.

Saltwater fly fishing reels from Spinfisher are highly regarded by experts and by saltwater fishermen and one of the reasons why this particular reel is so highly thought of is its drag knob that has been specially designed to seal it from contaminants as well as from saltwater. With these kinds of features you can rest assured that your saltwater fly fishing reel will keeps its integrity as well as alignment – both of which are important to get the most out of saltwater fly fishing.

Saltwater fly fishing is something that West Coast fly fishers are finding to be very exciting though in order to get the most out of their fly fishing in saltwater it is necessary to possess the right kind of skills as well as the best saltwater fly fishing equipment. It is for this reason that it is necessary that you know the proper methods to fly fish in saltwater and also have the right equipment to make the task of saltwater fly fishing easy and uncomplicated.

Fly Fishing How To

How much must one spend to get a quality saltwater fly fishing reel?

I need a resonably priced reel for chasing Tarpon, Snook, and Bonefish. Brand names would be appreciated.

Okuma makes a decent reel for saltwater applications and you could match that up with decent saltwater rod as well. I would get an 8wt or a 9wt. Go to FAOL or outdoorbest.zerofrorums - flyfishing section and search archived posts and ask some questions. I would not target tarpon with anything less than a 10wt rod and reel with a good line. The 8wt or 9wt will cross between salt and freshwater fishing if you want to target peacock bass in Florida or largemouth basss as well. Based on your budget, say $250 look at Cabelas and Bass Pro combos for 8wt and 9wt. Good luck

New to fly fishing and need some gear?

Hey i live on vancouver island and want to get into fly fishing. I want to fish for steelhead and trout in the rivers and lakes as well as coho in tidal waters, what type of setup would you recommend for a beginner I have already purchased waders and shoes and all the accessories i need, im just not sure on what rod and reel to get, as well as line weight and tippet. I was thinking of a 5w or 6w line with like a 2x or 3x tippet. I understand how line weights and tippet strengths work, i just want some second opinions on what to buy before i buy. I have around 200$ to spend (give or take ) and would like something saltwater proof aswell. Thanks ( and i have a rod 9 foot rod that my dad gave me a while ago thats nice just a little dated so i can use that if the reel is more expensive or both wont fit in my range, but i still need a reel) Thanks

I would recommend looking into a Cortland rod and reel combo in a 6wt. The reason that i recommend cortland is they have an excellent warranty on their products. It doesn't matter what you do or how old it is, they will repair/replace your rod or reel. I know people that have closed them in car doors and got them replaced FREE ( minus shipping). Since you are just getting started, this rod will work great and you wont notice a quality difference between this and a top of the line setup.

The tippet material will depend on the exact fish that you are targeting that day and the water conditions. If it is really clear and slow you will need a lighter weight, if it is fast and dirty i would go with a heavier weight leader and tippet.

Good luck and tight lines!

Introduction to Saltwater Fly Fishing

Wet Flies

Why do birds get their food wet?

I've noticed that Quiscalus Mexicanus around my house will steal my dog's food, then go to my pool, get the food wet and then fly away.

Why do they do this? Do they want to make the food softer, and they realize that they can achieve this by doing this? Or... Do they want it to have water in it for something? What are they trying to achieve and how did they learn to do it?

Wonder if it just makes it easier for them to swallow the dry kibble?

Saltwater Fly Fishing - New Method Of Fishing

The most common type of fishing method traditionally uses a spinning reel and tackle. A new method when it comes to fishing is emerging and that is the saltwater fly fishing. Saltwater fly fishing is considered the best when one wants to catch trout and salmon. Nowadays it is discovered as a best method when you want to catch ocean fishes like snook, tarpon, striped bass, bonefish, and redfish. Because of this Saltwater fly fishing is considered to be the best method when one wants to catch different species whether in fresh or sea water.

Saltwater fly fishing is considered different because the angler sees to it the he or she uses a rhythmic movement in fishing making sure that the lure is in the best spot. The bait is often known as a fly and this is where the method got its name. There are three types of this so-called fly – dry, wet or artificial. The dry are the baits that land on the surface water or can fly in the air. On the other hand the wet flies are actually the one going down the surface of the water. The artificial ones are made with hair, fur; feathers and other natural material than can resemble a creature that can catch a fish.

Fly tying can be considered as an art because some people find time in making their own. Of course there are those sold in shops with brand names. Flies can come in the form of larvae, crayfish, worms or crabs. When considering fly fishing one can have an advantage when you know the specific creatures your target fish wants to eat.

It is important to take note that the movement of the rod depends on the angler’s knowledge or what type of fish he or she is trying to catch. Saltwater fly fishing have a specific line, rod and reel. It is important that you use right tools for your fishing success. Also flies vary in sizes so it is important to consider it when selecting your fly fishing equipment. The stores often separate the equipments use for saltwater fly fishing so it is easy to differentiate them from others.

Saltwater fly fishing is worth giving a shot because it offers unique experience. A fishing activity can be a lot of fun. Not only you can be close to Mother Nature but you can also learn a lot of technical stuff. If fishing is not really your cup of tea then at least learn how to tie flies.

Sage Fly

need to buy a fly new rod and reel?

which one would you recomend hardy or sage ? price dont matter need to get it right an what model would it be?

Robert,

My nickname isn't Sagefisher by accident, I fish with Sage fly rods. I am a little prejudiced towards Sage, but then they make an excellent array of fly rods. They are all handmade made here in the United States.

There are a number of good fly rods out there. Sage is one of the best. Winston is also one of the best, but it's low end rods are now made overseas. Thomas & Thomas was just purchased by an English company so I don't know what they are going to do with their rods. Hardy is an English company and I am not familiar with their products.

Personally, I say buy Sage, you can't go wrong. The lifetime warranty is great, but then a number of other companies have had to start lifetime warranties as well, to try to keep up with the top of the line rods.

As for which Sage, that does depend on how much you want to spend and more importantly, your level of casting skill.

Sage breaks their fly rods down into three groups: Premium Fly Rods; Specialty Fly Rods; and Value Fly Rods.

The Specialty Fly Rod is the saltwater rated Xi2. This is a great saltwater fly rod, they make them from 4 weights to 16 weights. They are made for serious saltwater fishing.

The Premium Fly Rod is the area you may want to take a look at. They have a wider selection of rod actions and sizes.

In this area you have the very technical and extremely ultra fast action TCR fly rod. Unless you are a master caster I wouldn't consider this rod.

The new Z-Axis fly rod is their fast action rod, which replaced the XP series (I love the XP rods). The Z-Axis casts very well and is an excellent fly rod. Remember it is a fast action rod, great for nymphing and casting large streamers. I use an 11 foot 6 weight Z-Axis for nymphing and I love it. If you are going to be doing a lot of casting of small dries with really light tippet, I would not get this rod, but rather I think the SLT would be better.

If you are going to do a lot of dry fly fishing, especially smaller dry flies, then you may want to get a medium-fast action rod. This rod will handle the larger streamers and heavy dries yet allow you the ability to cast small dries using a 7X tippet.

The SLT series is an excellent medium-fast rod and great for virtually any fresh water fishing. That would be my choice for a dry fly rod.

They do make a TXL rod, a medium-fast action in a short rod (7' to 7' 10") in 000 to 4 weight sizes. Great for smaller fish and brushy creeks or streams. This is more of a specialty rod and not to be used for your usual lake or larger river fishing. You would not use this rod for casting large streamers or huge dry flies or heavy nymphing rigs.

If you did want to save a little money, you could go for a Sage value rods.

The Launch series is their lowest priced rod. It is a medium-fast rod and casts decently.

The FLi series costs a little more and is a fast action rod.

A consideration to be made, is what are your fishing needs? Are you going to be doing a lot of small stream fishing, or just larger creeks and rivers and lakes? Are you going to be doing a lot of small dry fly fishing or casting mostly large streamers and heavy nymphing outfits?

If you bought a 9 foot 5 weight Launch rod for dry flies and a 9 foot 6 weight FLi for streamers, you would have two rods for two different needs, or even buy an additional Launch rod in the 7 foot 3 weight for small streams, you would be spending just about as much as you would for their high end rods. That is a great way for a beginner to have a nice selection of rods.

However, if you have been fly fishing for a while and cast decently, then I would go for the higher end rod. You will appreciate the way they cast and handle the fly line.

For large streamers and heavy nymphing rigs, I would suggest a Z-Axis. It may be a fast action rod, but it is very sensitive and you can really feel the fish while fighting it.

For a lot of dry fly fishing, I would suggest the SLT in a 5 or 6 weight 9 foot rod.

Have fun selecting a rod. Have even more fun fishing with it.

The Annual Fly Fishing Retailer Show

As one of the most important events in the sport of fly fishing, the annual Fly Fishing Retailer show has become a tourist attraction in and of itself.  The 2007 show will take place September 16 through 18 in Denver, Colorado, at the Colorado Convention Center.  What can you expect if you plan to attend this show?

At Fly Fishing Retailer, you will get meaningful interaction with other avid fly fishers as well as experts.  If you have questions about fly fishing, just ask.  There are many, many people on hand who are more than happy to answer any queries you have about this wonderful sport.

They offer tons of seminars on a variety of subjects.  You can learn about fly tying, teaching others how to fly fish, what type of tackle to bring with you, and so much more.  There is a casting pond where the experts can give you advice about your casting techniques and help you improve your casts for maximum efficiency.

Orvis sponsors a saltwater fly fishing cup where competitors vie for the $7,500 grand prize.  All equipment is supplied by Orvis, and it is held on one of the casting ponds that are set up in the convention center.  You cast for distance as well as accuracy.

Besides the seminars and activities, you will also find numerous companies exhibiting their fly fishing equipment.  You will see some of the newest products from these companies and will also have the opportunity to purchase any of the equipment you are interested in.

There are over two hundred exhibitors set to be at the 2007 show including Sage, Orvis, Federation of Fly Fishers, Trout Unlimited, and many more.  You'll be able to see their products, ask questions, and even try out the gear before you buy it.

You will also get a lot of information about conservation efforts in various areas.  It's important to many fly fishermen to preserve the waters that they fish.  Without conservation and respect for the land, the fish wouldn't be plentiful and the sport would die.  Experts will tell you the best preservation efforts to take about yourself as well as part of a group.

You will also find some famous authors who have written very popular books on the sport of fly fishing.  You can mingle with them, ask them questions, and gain knowledge through their expertise on this great sport.

When you attend Fly Fishing Retailer, you will find more information than you ever thought possible.  You will be introduced to many fly fishing products and gain insight into the sport that you love.

One of the best ways to find out if saltwater fly fishing is for you is to sign on to a saltwater fly fishing charter, available in most fishing resort areas. Taking one of these excursions can seem expensive to the uninitiated, but the cost of the saltwater fly fishing charter will be cheaper than buying your own equipment, buying a boat and riding around the ocean looking for your target. The idea of a charter is to get the patrons to the fish as quickly as possible and there is a good chance you can catch your limit during the length of the trip.

There will be different saltwater fly fishing charters available for different types of fish, from staying close to shore for grouper and sea bass to longer trips into deeper water for tarpon and blue fish. The boat's captain will be experienced enough to know during any time of the year where the best opportunity is for their customers to catch the fish they are after, as well as knowing the right tackle that will be needed to make the trip a success.

Additionally, when on a saltwater fly fishing charter, the charter company can supply everything you need fishing the waters as well as provide lunch and beverages while you are out on the water. With good quality saltwater fly fishing tackle costing over $1,000 it can make the cost of any charter a bargain when the company supplies everything you need.

How To Choose The Right Charter Captain

The toughest decision will be in finding the right saltwater fly fishing charter captain that can assure that you not only catch fish, but one that can safely bring you back to shore. It takes a special skill to be an accomplished saltwater fly angler and even more skill to be charter boat captain. For booking a saltwater fly fishing charter, you will want both in the same person handling the boat.

Family or friends that may have experienced a saltwater fly fishing charter may have recommendations about who to choose. Additionally, most charter companies now have websites where previous customers can post their opinions about their experience on the saltwater fly fishing charter.

If you already know how to fly fish, figuring out if the boat has the right fly fishing equipment should be easy enough. Checking the length of time the saltwater fly fishing charter captain has been working in the waters should offer hints as to their experience in leading fishing groups.
