do i have a fishing problem?

i am constantly wanting more and more fly fishing and/or fly tying materials...even if i dont have the money i still look and want...do i have a problem or am i just addicted to it?
no i dont spend necesary money...im still a kid...still at home....

Nah, it'll pass. And I know exactly WHEN it will pass. It will pass when:

...you have a stockpile of materials that you are accustomed to working on and when you have enough to tie the flies you need.

...you have the necessary tools to easily and conveniently tie the flies you need.

...you have tried all the funky and interesting materials, tools, books, etc., you see online or in the fly shop. You will sort out the things that are really useful and what is merely faddish or excessive, and you have narrowed your commonly used materials and tools to the ones you really need and use.

...you have learned most of the basic techniques and can easily tie the flies you need for an upcoming excursion.

..the novelty has worn away from this new hobby, and it's more like fishing itself (you still look forward to and enjoy it, but you're not so ga-ga about it).

Once those conditions have been met, your life will go back to more-or-less normal, and you'll just be fly tier. You might still be obsessed, but the obsession will "settle down" somewhat so you can do the other things in life that give us enjoyment -- like eat, sleep, go to the toilet, etc.

Check Out the Basics in Fly Fishing and Fly Tying

Fly fishing is a skill that is achieve thru use of right equipment, right angle precision, and right fly tying. The techniques in fly fishing and fly tying should come hand in hand to achieve fly fishing success. Tying the knot is as important as choosing the right equipment in fly fishing. Techniques of fly fishing and fly tying are learned easily when following the right steps and guidelines. Before the learning the right techniques in fly fishing, one must learn the right tying of the knot in order to be attached to the fly-fishing tackle.

Below are different types of knot to make to be attached to the fly fishing tackle.

Surgeons knot

This is the simplest knot to tie and is very strong in structure. This is usually used when the tippet is almost used up and another piece needs to be tied. The first thing to do is to overlap two lines with tag ends on opposite direction. This should be approximately 6 inches in length. Then, a loop is made where the right side is passed over and around the left side twice. The last step is to pull on all 4 ends of the knot and moisten it to make it hold together. The tag ends will then be clipped close to the knot.

Nail Knot

This is commonly used to attach backing line. A needle may be used for this type of knot. The first step is to assemble the fly line and the needle along the fly line. Then the backing line is laid along with the needle and then a turn is made to secure and hold all pieces together. The tag end is pushed to the channel created by the needle and the tag end is pushed forward while the needle is slowly withdrawn. This will tighten the knot.

Arbor Knot

This type of knot is useful in tying and securing on line end to spool arbor of the reel. The first step is to have the line around the reel's spool arbor. Then an overhead knot is tied to tag end. This is the first overhead knot and a second overhand knot should be made close to the first one. The standing part of the line is pulled to allow 2 overhand knots to jam on the spool. Tag end can be trimmed to make it neat.

The knot is a very important part of fishing tools because it stands between the fish biting the lure and your rod. If your knot is not tied properly and you don't use the appropriate one, it might just cost you the fish of your life. Seriously, you should be very mindful of all your fishing tools. They are not very many but each one is essential because each one has its own function. And these tools differ in qualities. If you are more of action fishing with bass flying fishing, you must get the strongest and most durable fishing tools on hand because it's going to be a struggle and battle. If you have a weak rod, not properly tied knot, and inappropriate lure, bass flying fishing will be just a dream.

Fly Fishing is a very old method of fishing that is particularly effective for hauling in trout. Ponds, small streams, rivers and lakes are best for trout. Fly fishing is tantalizingly unique in that the bait is artificial flies made by tying, fur, yarn, feathers, foam, or almost anything else that can be made to look like a fly onto a hook as bait. The best way to learn how to tie flies is to talk with anglers who have become experts over time or you could attend a fly tying school.

Dry fly fishing and wet fly fishing are the two forms of fly-fishing. Dry fly fishing is the most familiar and is regarded as the classic form. Using the dry fly fishing technique, the angler casts the fly upstream hoping that the trout will rise up and bite the fly as it passes overhead. Wet fly-fishing involves fishing beneath the surface of the water and can be divided into lures fishing, true wet fly-fishing and nymph fishing.

Fly-fishing tackle, and fly-fishing reels and rods are all commonly used fly-fishing equipment. Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, California, Idaho and more recently New Mexico are all popular fly-fishing areas in the U.S.. British Columbia and Alberta are also very popular.

The popularity of fly-fishing has increased dramatically in recent years. It is definitely a fast growing sport and it’s easy to see why; it’s relaxing, enjoyable and rewarding. Usually, fly-fishing anglers practice the sport in the most beautiful areas of the world. Fly-fishermen worldwide are known to have an on going love affair with their sport.

Beginning fly-fishing anglers may have difficulty learning the sport. Probably the best place to learn is a fly-fishing school or from a fly-fisherman that is willing to take you on as a student. There are also a number of excellent fly-fishing courses on the Internet. The school you choose should teach the techniques, strategies, and tactics used in fly-fishing.

Before you get hipdeep in any water, you should learn about the various fish you’ll be casting for, learn the basics of casting and how to read the water, you’ll want to know how to take care of your gear and how to tie knots, and maybe you’ll even want to learn a little about hatches and entomology.

This sport is a life-long source of endless delight. You will live to feel the hairs on the back of your neck tingle as you watch a trout looking upstream for the fly you’ve just cast.

Next is the scissors especially made for fly tying. Look out for cheaper scissors as they’re not reliable compared to the top quality ones. You need to get a good pair of fly tying scissors to cut delicate materials to its proper shape. Anyway, you wouldn’t be spending much on this tool since it isn’t too costly. The price ranges from $8 to $15; a reasonable price for fly fishing purposes.

Then there is the thread bobbin. A thread bobbin is good for holding the spool of thread from rolling out. The thread then goes through a barrel. Check for the edges of the barrel, if it has sharp edges, then it’s no good for the thread.

The bodkin is a large needle mounted on a handle. This small tool has many purposes. It can be used for separating fine strands you want to add to the fly, cleaning and even dabbing cement. You should never go fly tying without this tool.

And lastly, the tool called the Whip Finisher. This tool is used to tie the thread securely in a half inch knot. Beginners and intermediate flyers alike could make use of this nifty tool because it finishes off the tying job quick and clean. You can buy a whip finisher for a price of $14.

danica dan vise? yes, no, maybe so?

so i want a rotary vise but still want to be able to afford fly tying materials but ive looked at the danvise and i am getting mixed feelings about it... i get a lot of good reviews and a lot of bad ones...so what is your actual take on it...and is it very strong? im still a little iffy on the whole delrin resin stuff that most of it is made out of

You have been thinking about this for a long while now! i realize that you don't want to waste your money but only YOU can decide if its the vise for you. The Dan Vise is a good little vise for the price, its not just going to snap. Buy it from a company such as Cabelas if you don't like it or it breaks return it and get a full money refund-simple as that.

Your either going to get one and love it or hate it, however if you don't like it return it as i have already said, im sure Cabelas would let you return it and maybe even allow you to select another of the same price if you don't like it.

But one things for certain, if you buy the vise get some materials and give it a try-enjoy your fly tying only then will you be able to see if you like it. You will always get bad reviews about some products mainly because the reviewer has had a bad experience with it, even the bet of gear breaks-i have only just snapped my Sage TCR fly rod, which i paid $580 for two years ago, so paying the biggest amount you can doesn't always mean the best gear.

Even though I hunt I get most of my Fly Tying supplies from a place called Jann’s it have a very reasonable price and good supply.
You may run an add in the local paper or put up flyers in shooting ranges and shooting supply stores and see if you can get area hunters to save what you need.
You can check on custom butcher shops that process deer, a lot of them just trash the deer hide and tails.

In fly fishing, flies are generally divided into four types of artificial flies. (Flies are also called lures in some countries.) 

They are:

1       Dry flies

2 Wet flies

3 Nymphs

4 Streamers

The categories of flies can cross into each other.  There are no real strict guidelines for classifying the flies as depending on the countries, traditions of terminology.  (Some anglers also classify emerges as another category of flies. These sit partially underneath the surface and partially on top of the water, imitating things like newly emerging mayflies.)



Dry flies sit on the top of the water.  They imitate insects sitting on the surface like mayflies, midges, caddis flies, beetles, grasshoppers, spiders and spinners to name a few types. They can be fished still, drifting with the current or wind, or fished with small twitches or rapid pulls. Using dry flies can be exhilarating experience as you can see the fish strike the fly.   Dries are used seasonally in lakes and rivers and are generally effective when fish are actively feeding on insects on top of the water.  Dry flies are normally made of light buoyant materials or are tied with hackles that help the fly sit on the water surface.  A floatant spray or gel is applied to the dry fly to make it buoyant.  A couple of false casts will also help dry it.



Wet flies as the name suggest that the fly is fished in the water, either.  The flies can imitate small baitfish, leeches, frogs, crawdad's and swimming insects.  Wets can be fished just under the surface with dead drifts, slow twitches up to fast retrieves.  Some times a take will occur as the fly is sinking.  For getting wets deep down, weighted or bead heads are effective, especially when combined with intermediate or sinking fly lines.



Nymphs are a very effective and a common world wide food source in rivers and lakes.  Nymphs can be fished on the drop, drifting, and slow to medium retrieves, either just under the surface or deep down. They imitate the underwater stage of insects like mayfly nymphs, stoneflies and damselfly nymphs. A good portion of a trout’s diet consists of nymphs in most seasons and waters. A long leader and tippet is effective for nymphing, especially in clear or over fished waters.

Streamers are bigger wet flies imitating baitfish like minnows, sculpins and bigger appetizing food.  Streamers usually work best near the bottom and are generally quickly retrieved for salmon, bigger trout and also for saltwater fish. Bigger flies like streamers, may also result in a bigger catch, although don’t be surprised when your four inch streamer lands a small twelve inch trout.  Artificial streamers can be colorful and have a mixture of assorted fly tying materials.

Dry flies, wets, nymphs and streamers are all effective in the right environment. The secret to getting the most out your fishing is to use different techniques and test all the time. Don’t be afraid to try different types of flies and patterns, especially if the fishing is slow. So no matter what country you live in and regardless of how you classify your flies, just make sure you have various types of flies to cover all fly fishing conditions and fish. Now you are ready to catch the big one!

Can you recommend a good fly tying book?

I have been tying flies for a short time and I would like a good reference on tying flies. I do NOT need a "beginner's" book and I do not necessarily want the newest book or the one with the most patterns. What I'd like is a solid, well-known reference written by a well-known fly tier that includes a lot of "classic" patterns with basic tying/material instructions, and then maybe some bit of background and/or fishing instructions for each fly. I am considering Ted Leeson's "Benchside Reference," but I've looked through it seems to be only techniques -- no actual pattern instructions. Older books are fine, as long as there is some form of photos or illustrations. Thanks!

The Orvis Pattern Indexes are hard to beat. And you're right in that the Benchside Reference is more for technique than pattern. I consider it a "must have" but it is one that I recommend adding only after you've mastered some basic patterns and basic techniques.

Dave Hughes' "Essential Trout Flies" is also excellent. And if you're wanting to spend a few more bucks, his "Trout Flies" is all you'll ever need. BIG book, and about $50, but loaded with excellent info.

No, I'm not Dave Hughes :) and there are many other books out there which are just as good (maybe better). I've been tying for 30 years, and the book I use most often is the Orvis Pattern Index (several volumes, which can be hard to find but usually show up on eBay fairly often). Of the books readily available, those two by Hughes are hard to beat if trout is your target.

For an online reference, http://www.flyanglersonline.com/ and look in the Fly Tying Section for the lessons by Al Campbell (a great fisherman, EXCELLENT tier, and even better man). That little series is excellent, and there is a plethora of patterns there as well with good to excellent instructions and technique for fishing them once you've tied them.

Al Campbell was a true fly fisherman who shared all he knew with anyone who asked. He taught (literally) hundreds of thousands to tie flies, and I think about him every time I tie a fly on a leader. His series is worth a look, no matter how long you've been tying.

what is an easy fly patern that doesnt require a lot of material?

ok so im looking for a new fly fishing fly to tie...im running low on materials rite now and dont have a whole lot of money to buy any more...so im looking for something thats easy to tie and doesnt need many things to tie it with
ok thanks airflow but lol lately all i have been tying are san juans and 2 different colors of phesant tails

you probably won't have the tiny hooks but midges would be good cuz you'll use next to nothing tying them. midges are the number 1 trout food throughout the year in most rivers(do some reading it is true...). if you had a little money then canadian brown leeches, sheep creek specials or stayner ducktails, all 3 of these do well in most stillwater. hairs ears perhaps? stoneflys can be done pretty plain too, and they work just as well as the high detail ones....

i have just started fly fishing and i am after a good intermediate line?

which make is best and where do i buy it from.....ps. i am trout fishing in sheffield, yorkshire and not salmon in canada!!!

Hi I have tried quite a few different makes of fly lines and personally I find the Cortland range very good and if you want a very good clear intermediate I would go go the 333 Pro Clear one as its a good beginner's line which is easy to cast. it comes in w/f 6,7,8 and costs around the £34.00 mark, I know its not the cheapest but I find it a very good line for small / medium sized still waters and you can buy them through most retail outlets including the mail order ones but if you shop around you can get some very good deals, I fish mainly Rutland, Grafham, Ravensthorp, and waters like Lechlade and Elinor and I don't have many problems with it including little to no line memory.
I hope you find one you like and carry on fishing oh and by the way if you ever get a chance to do some float tubing then do it as its the most fun you can have with a pair of chest waders on !!!!! especially when you catch a 2lb trout and it tows you round the lake !

Fly Fishing, Beginners Guide to the Types of Fishing Flies

In fly fishing, flies are generally divided into four types of artificial flies. (Flies are also called lures in some countries.) 

They are:

1       Dry flies

2 Wet flies

3 Nymphs

4 Streamers

The categories of flies can cross into each other.  There are no real strict guidelines for classifying the flies as depending on the countries, traditions of terminology.  (Some anglers also classify emerges as another category of flies. These sit partially underneath the surface and partially on top of the water, imitating things like newly emerging mayflies.)


Dry flies sit on the top of the water.  They imitate insects sitting on the surface like mayflies, midges, caddis flies, beetles, grasshoppers, spiders and spinners to name a few types. They can be fished still, drifting with the current or wind, or fished with small twitches or rapid pulls. Using dry flies can be exhilarating experience as you can see the fish strike the fly.   Dries are used seasonally in lakes and rivers and are generally effective when fish are actively feeding on insects on top of the water.  Dry flies are normally made of light buoyant materials or are tied with hackles that help the fly sit on the water surface.  A floatant spray or gel is applied to the dry fly to make it buoyant.  A couple of false casts will also help dry it.


Wet flies as the name suggest that the fly is fished in the water, either.  The flies can imitate small baitfish, leeches, frogs, crawdad's and swimming insects.  Wets can be fished just under the surface with dead drifts, slow twitches up to fast retrieves.  Some times a take will occur as the fly is sinking.  For getting wets deep down, weighted or bead heads are effective, especially when combined with intermediate or sinking fly lines.


Nymphs are a very effective and a common world wide food source in rivers and lakes.  Nymphs can be fished on the drop, drifting, and slow to medium retrieves, either just under the surface or deep down. They imitate the underwater stage of insects like mayfly nymphs, stoneflies and damselfly nymphs. A good portion of a trout’s diet consists of nymphs in most seasons and waters. A long leader and tippet is effective for nymphing, especially in clear or over fished waters.

Streamers are bigger wet flies imitating baitfish like minnows, sculpins and bigger appetizing food.  Streamers usually work best near the bottom and are generally quickly retrieved for salmon, bigger trout and also for saltwater fish. Bigger flies like streamers, may also result in a bigger catch, although don’t be surprised when your four inch streamer lands a small twelve inch trout.  Artificial streamers can be colorful and have a mixture of assorted fly tying materials.

Dry flies, wets, nymphs and streamers are all effective in the right environment. The secret to getting the most out your fishing is to use different techniques and test all the time. Don’t be afraid to try different types of flies and patterns, especially if the fishing is slow. So no matter what country you live in and regardless of how you classify your flies, just make sure you have various types of flies to cover all fly fishing conditions and fish. Now you are ready to catch the big one!

need to buy a fly new rod and reel?

which one would you recomend hardy or sage ? price dont matter need to get it right an what model would it be?

My nickname isn't Sagefisher by accident, I fish with Sage fly rods. I am a little prejudiced towards Sage, but then they make an excellent array of fly rods. They are all handmade made here in the United States.

There are a number of good fly rods out there. Sage is one of the best. Winston is also one of the best, but it's low end rods are now made overseas. Thomas & Thomas was just purchased by an English company so I don't know what they are going to do with their rods. Hardy is an English company and I am not familiar with their products.

Personally, I say buy Sage, you can't go wrong. The lifetime warranty is great, but then a number of other companies have had to start lifetime warranties as well, to try to keep up with the top of the line rods.

As for which Sage, that does depend on how much you want to spend and more importantly, your level of casting skill.

Sage breaks their fly rods down into three groups: Premium Fly Rods; Specialty Fly Rods; and Value Fly Rods.

The Specialty Fly Rod is the saltwater rated Xi2. This is a great saltwater fly rod, they make them from 4 weights to 16 weights. They are made for serious saltwater fishing.

The Premium Fly Rod is the area you may want to take a look at. They have a wider selection of rod actions and sizes.

In this area you have the very technical and extremely ultra fast action TCR fly rod. Unless you are a master caster I wouldn't consider this rod.

The new Z-Axis fly rod is their fast action rod, which replaced the XP series (I love the XP rods). The Z-Axis casts very well and is an excellent fly rod. Remember it is a fast action rod, great for nymphing and casting large streamers. I use an 11 foot 6 weight Z-Axis for nymphing and I love it. If you are going to be doing a lot of casting of small dries with really light tippet, I would not get this rod, but rather I think the SLT would be better.

If you are going to do a lot of dry fly fishing, especially smaller dry flies, then you may want to get a medium-fast action rod. This rod will handle the larger streamers and heavy dries yet allow you the ability to cast small dries using a 7X tippet.

The SLT series is an excellent medium-fast rod and great for virtually any fresh water fishing. That would be my choice for a dry fly rod.

They do make a TXL rod, a medium-fast action in a short rod (7' to 7' 10") in 000 to 4 weight sizes. Great for smaller fish and brushy creeks or streams. This is more of a specialty rod and not to be used for your usual lake or larger river fishing. You would not use this rod for casting large streamers or huge dry flies or heavy nymphing rigs.

If you did want to save a little money, you could go for a Sage value rods.

The Launch series is their lowest priced rod. It is a medium-fast rod and casts decently.

The FLi series costs a little more and is a fast action rod.

A consideration to be made, is what are your fishing needs? Are you going to be doing a lot of small stream fishing, or just larger creeks and rivers and lakes? Are you going to be doing a lot of small dry fly fishing or casting mostly large streamers and heavy nymphing outfits?

If you bought a 9 foot 5 weight Launch rod for dry flies and a 9 foot 6 weight FLi for streamers, you would have two rods for two different needs, or even buy an additional Launch rod in the 7 foot 3 weight for small streams, you would be spending just about as much as you would for their high end rods. That is a great way for a beginner to have a nice selection of rods.

However, if you have been fly fishing for a while and cast decently, then I would go for the higher end rod. You will appreciate the way they cast and handle the fly line.

For large streamers and heavy nymphing rigs, I would suggest a Z-Axis. It may be a fast action rod, but it is very sensitive and you can really feel the fish while fighting it.

For a lot of dry fly fishing, I would suggest the SLT in a 5 or 6 weight 9 foot rod.

The Annual Fly Fishing Retailer Show

As one of the most important events in the sport of fly fishing, the annual Fly Fishing Retailer show has become a tourist attraction in and of itself.  The 2007 show will take place September 16 through 18 in Denver, Colorado, at the Colorado Convention Center.  What can you expect if you plan to attend this show?  

At Fly Fishing Retailer, you will get meaningful interaction with other avid fly fishers as well as experts.  If you have questions about fly fishing, just ask.  There are many, many people on hand who are more than happy to answer any queries you have about this wonderful sport.

They offer tons of seminars on a variety of subjects.  You can learn about fly tying, teaching others how to fly fish, what type of tackle to bring with you, and so much more.  There is a casting pond where the experts can give you advice about your casting techniques and help you improve your casts for maximum efficiency.

Orvis sponsors a saltwater fly fishing cup where competitors vie for the $7,500 grand prize.  All equipment is supplied by Orvis, and it is held on one of the casting ponds that are set up in the convention center.  You cast for distance as well as accuracy.

Besides the seminars and activities, you will also find numerous companies exhibiting their fly fishing equipment.  You will see some of the newest products from these companies and will also have the opportunity to purchase any of the equipment you are interested in.

There are over two hundred exhibitors set to be at the 2007 show including Sage, Orvis, Federation of Fly Fishers, Trout Unlimited, and many more.  You'll be able to see their products, ask questions, and even try out the gear before you buy it.  

You will also get a lot of information about conservation efforts in various areas.  It's important to many fly fishermen to preserve the waters that they fish.  Without conservation and respect for the land, the fish wouldn't be plentiful and the sport would die.  Experts will tell you the best preservation efforts to take about yourself as well as part of a group.

You will also find some famous authors who have written very popular books on the sport of fly fishing.  You can mingle with them, ask them questions, and gain knowledge through their expertise on this great sport.

When you attend Fly Fishing Retailer, you will find more information than you ever thought possible.  You will be introduced to many fly fishing products and gain insight into the sport that you love.
