The rod blanks are split bamboo (Tonkin cane) and come from China, the location of the first bamboo rods. All other components like the snake guide, fly top, fly reel seat, and others are made by the American based Pacific Bay International, the premier authority for rod-building components. Our combining of genuine American handiwork with Chinese bamboo rods makes these fly rods the best in the business!

Many of you are already fly fishing aficionados and know exactly why Tonkin bamboo fishing rods are the best in the business, for those of you who do not and simply think that bamboo rods are for the romantics and old-fashioned here is a brief write-up that will hopefully enlighten you to the wonders of bamboo rods.

Quite simply, there is nothing that casts like a genuine Tonkin bamboo fishing rod. Engineers have tried since fly-fishings inception to duplicate the line-throwing properties of a bamboo rod, but nothing is ever quite like the real thing. ... Click Here For More Info >>

Fly Fishing Instruction

How would you recommend to go fly fishing?

I am a beginner in flyfishing. What method would you recommend. I tried the false cast already and was okay at it. What method is the easiest for beginners and could you give me links or give me instructions on how to do it?

Thanks

Well, the false cast isn't really just a method, it's a mainstay of fly casting. The false cast enables you to adjust your distance, it's how you aim your cast, and it can help to dry out your fly if you're using a dry. Beginner or not, you have to master the basic cast if you want to fly fish.

The roll cast is also important, but I'm not going to even try to describe it. It's best for situations where your back-cast area is not clear, and when you have a lot of unfriendly wind. There are many other variations on the basic cast, and these are handy for different conditions and settings, but you must be proficient in basic casting before you move on to those.

There are a number of casting videos on YouTube. Do a search on fly casting and watch a few. Some are pretty good, some suck. You can also get books and DVDs from your public library on fly casting, though I have to say that learning to cast from a book like learning to speak Spanish from someone who only speaks in sign language. Stick to DVDs for casting instruction. Sometimes schools, angling clubs, or other organizations have fly casting seminars. My chapter of Trout Unlimited has a couple free seminars each year. Check around your area for opportunities like that -- the best way to learn casting is personal instruction. If you have some extra cash, consider a class.

Fly Fishing Knots

When you are fly fishing, tying the right knots can make a world of difference in your success or failure. It’s important to not only select the right knot for the situation but also to tie it properly. Poorly tied knots will mean lost fish and frustration for you, so knowing about the right knots and how to tie them can be a huge part of the fly fishing experience.

Before you tighten a knot, moisten it with saliva or with water you are fishing on. This will help the knot slide and seat properly. Lubrication also decreases excessive heat which can weaken the monofilament. Heat is generated by friction created when the knots are drawn up tight. Moistening the knot will reduce this heat and allow you to have good, strong knots.

Tighten knots with a steady, continuous pull. This is called seating the knot. Make sure the knot is tight and secure. To check this, pull on the line and leader to be sure it holds. It’s better to test its strength before you cast rather than to have it break once you get a hook.

There are plenty of books available that give step-by-step instructions on how to properly tie specific knots. You can also find many tutorials online that can show you how to tie specific knots.

You will need to know how to secure your line to the reel. This is called “Backing to the fly reel” and there is a specific knot as to how to achieve that. When you are backing to the fly line, you should use either an Albright Knot or a Nail Knot. The Nail Knot is also good for using when tying the fly line to the leader.

When securing the leader to the tippet, good knot choices include the Surgeon’s Knot or the Barrel Knot. Securing the tippet to the fly can be achieved easily with a Clinch Knot or a Duncan’s Loop.

It has been said that the weakest part of a fly fisherman’s equipment is his knots. A fighting fish will test every link in between the angler and itself. If one of these link is lacking, the line will break and the fish will be lost. Unless you’re really eager to share a “the one that got away” story, learning to tie knots can be the most important part of your fly fishing experience.

Some fly fishing knots are simple to do – others are a little more complicated. Practice tying knots before you get on the water. Become proficient at it and be sure you can do it in low light in case you have a broken line. There is no one knot best for any specific situation – the choice is personal. But when you are fly fishing, you need to depend on your knots and it’s worth taking the time to learn properly.

Don't Settle for Less, Get the Best Fly Fishing Gear Now

Fly fishing is now a sport and a hobby that most people are enjoying. The main reason for the fast-spreading fame of it is the relaxing effect it has on the body, the entertaining activity it provides and the beautiful scenery we see before our eyes. Before, fly fishing or just plain fishing in general is done to provide food in the table and for survival. However, today, it is done for enjoyment and relaxation.

Unlike other sports it doesn't involve any physical exhaustion and unlike other vacation trips, it actually engages our full attention. This beautiful combination of relaxing us at the same time keeping us on our feet is what makes it a unique and enjoyable activity. The simple ways of doing it is so easy that even a beginner can easily do it. However, it is still challenging enough to keep the veterans interested and hooked. Basically this activity has some special tools. These tools are called fly fishing gear. We basically need a fly rod, fly reel, and fly lines to do it. These things compose the fly fishing gear that we must have. Without one of these could mean that we cannot do it because we are not equipped for it. How can we ever do something without the right tools?

In fishing resorts, fly fishing gear is usually available either for rent or for sale. This is for the convenience of those who are using there facilities to do it. The fishing gear plays a vital role in fly fishing. The quality of a fly fishing gear is also another thing to consider. Good quality fly fishing gear could greatly affect the progress of a beginner. Even veterans would patronize the good quality fishing gear. This is because it would be made easier if the quality of the tools we use is the best.

By making sure that we have a good quality fly fishing gear, we also assure ourselves that our tools will not snap in two when we catch a huge fish and that it would still be functional even after a number of years of fishing. Our safety is also involved when we consider buying a fishing gear. Although the chances of hurting ourselves over a tool are minimal, we cannot risk it. This especially true if we plan to go fishing in deep waters using a small boat. A lot of things could happen and accidents do not give warnings beforehand. So to be able to enjoy a safe fishing activity, good quality fly fishing gear must be top priority.

Fly Fishing Reels

Has anyone bought fly fishing gear online?

My father needs a new fly fishing reel - so I was wondering. This one has some good articles and fly reels it looks like http://www.classicflyfishing.com/

I've bought quite a lot of fly fishing stuff online, but I've never really bought something "blind." That is, I've never researched a major purchase online and bought it unless I've at least looked at it and handled it in a store. I've always picked what I wanted (a rod or reel or whatever) by trying it out first at a store or by borrowing a friend's, then purchasing online. Online sellers can often offer bigger selections and better prices than brick-and-mortar shops. While I try to support my local retailers, sometimes you've got to go online to get what you want at the best price.

I think I've looked at classicflyfishing.com a time or two but have never bought anything there. I've heard praise for those Hardy reels but they're a little out of my price range -- I'm not sure I've ever even seen one. So far I've had no trouble catching fish on reels in the $100 price range, but if that's what your dad wants and you're going to get him one, all I can say is -- you're a very good son. Heh.

Orvis Battenkill

What's the difference between these two fly reels?

Orvis Battenkill Bar Stock III $130 3.9 oz., 3" diameter, for 5-7 line weights.

weights.http://www.orvis.com/store/product.aspx?pf_id=40C7&dir_id=758&group_id=768&cat_id=7627&subcat_id=7643

Orvis Battenkill Bar Stock Disc Drag $130 III 3.95 oz., 3" diameter, for 4-7 line weights.

http://www.orvis.com/store/product.aspx?pf_id=44KY&dir_id=758&group_id=768&cat_id=7627&subcat_id=7643

What is the difference? Which ones better? What is disc drag? Also are both of these salt water proof?

I don't own an Orvis reel, but I've looked at the BBS series and it looks like both the links you've provided point to the BBS III. I think it's one of those cases where the webmaster has two different names for the same product and so they show up as different products. The specs are basically the same, the measurements, the material stock, the price, the drag, and the arbor -- all the same. I really think this is the same unit named twice and with two versions of the product info. Big e-tailers with deep, constantly changing product lines will often suffer from this overlap.

The BBS III has disc drag, which is considered by most to be superior to so-called "S&P" drag. Disc drag works like disc brakes -- applying pressure disc-on-disc to limit the payout of the reel. The S&P system is more like caliper breaks on a bike -- applying a point of pressure to a small rim of the reel, which means it's not as adjustable, powerful, or as steady. High-end users claim they need even more complicated drag systems, but if you're working with 4-7 weight line, your drag needs are going to be limited. Basically, when dealing with fish less than 6 or 8 pounds, your hand on the flyline is your drag. What you need to know is that the disc drag system is better than S&P, and that's part of why the reel is >$100+ and not <$50.

One of these units has the saltwater proof claim, the other doesn't. However, if they are, as I believe they are, the same unit, then yes, "both" would be saltwater proof, though you should treat claims of such with caution -- saltwater is very tough on all gear, and you shouldn't treat anything as though it's impervious to the elements.

In any case, it seems to me that you're looking at the same reel in two different places on the same site. If you walked into a flyshop and asked for an Orvis BBS III, they would not have two different versions of that reel (other than it's available in two colors). There is only one BBS III.

TPT Orvis Battenkill Review

Rod Fly

What type of fly rod and reel would be best?

Im a 16 kid and im wanting to get into fly fishing. I have fished all of my life but never fly fished and i wanted to know if anyone knew of a sturdy fly rod and reel for a beginner with a budget of only about $500.

take it from someone who averages more than 20 hours a week fishing year around.

orvis is nice stuff, but not the best and they are over priced, your not likely to find much in your price range. 20 year ago they were the best, but over the years quality has not kept up with their price increases.

I wouldn't spend to much on a new rig, you'll likely break it anyway.
TFO rods are totally decent and well priced, good rods to learn on and they will warranty the rod if you break it (most companies will actually for a slight fee, usually $50). cabela's actually has some really good deals on rod/reel combo's on their own brand and they are actually nice rods and you have several prices to choose from, anywhere from $70 to close to $400 for their top of the line L-tech series. I've had a chance to cast the L-tech and they are nice casting rods, might be a little to medium action for a beginner though. I'd go for something in the PT or LST line for about $250 and save the rest of your money for flys and leaders, even their $70-$120 outfits are nice and they usually come with line and backing.

if you want the best, but you'll pay for it. Winston and Sage are some of the nicest rods you'll find anywhere short of custom stuff like thomas&thomas. for gear like waders, boots and vests Simms is by far the best you'll find. My orvis super tak-l-pac vest lasted less than a year before the seams around the pockets started to rip (and I hate chasing my fly boxes down the river), my Simms G3 vest is much better and handles the load much better (after about 4 hours of fishing the my back would start to hurt with the orvis, not with the simms) and when it comes to boots I haven't had any boot last 1/2 as long as my Simms and none are more comfortable, and I really like my new guide boots with the rubber sole, much lighter. they make the best waders you can find but if you have a budget Cabela's better lines are the only others that I've seen that copied Simms inseam design and moved it from between your legs to the front or back of the leg. the inseam is where most of the waders I've had in the past have worn out, the two inseams rub together while you walk and next thing you know your legs are wet.

I had an orvis zero gravity and hated it, the action just didn't work for me. it would have been a good rod for large rivers but I like small fast rivers and the orvis just wouldn't load up unless I had a lot of line on the water and didn't cast well under 40ft, my winston (my favorite) and sage rods both out performed it both near and far. keep in mind though that a rods action is a very personal thing that you'll learn as your experience increases. good luck.

Fly Fishing Tackle – What is It?

Fly fishing is a specific type of fishing and therefore requires a specific type of tackle. But to those who are new to fishing may ask "what is it?" and what is the difference between them? The general idea of the difference is that different fish can be caught because of the different tools used. The most common associated fish caught with fly fishing tackles is trout and salmon, however pike, bass and carp are being caught as well. This article will help you understand what fly fishing is and the different attributes involved.

The basic apparatus in fly fishing is the fly rod, fly line and artificial fly line and fly reel. Each part of the tackle is vital in its own way in catching fish. The fly rod is used to cast the fly line. Depending on the type of fish caught and the environment being fished the lengths will vary between 7 to 10 feet. Normally the fly rod will be made from fibreglass and graphite and in some cases bamboo. By using different materials, the rods are lighter, heavier, stiff or bendy. Again fly rods are made from materials that suit the intended purpose.

The fly line part of the fly fishing tackle is a plastic coated line that can be found in many different floating and sinking styles in a variety of thicknesses. They range from colour to colour in many cases are bright in order to attract the prey intended to be caught.

A major part to fly fishing tackle is the artificial flies. They are made by tying hair, feathers, fur and other natural and synthetic materials onto a hook. In the past natural flies were used however, in today's fishing tackle synthetics are proven to be much more popular. Depending on the type of fishing being caught and the environment in which you fish different flies are needed. Artificial flies range from bright vibrant colours in order to stand out, or darker colours to match the environment.

The fly reel is an important attribute when one looks at fly fishing tackle. The reel is used to hold the fly fishing line. The reel is the fundamental attribute when one considers fly fishing. Depending on the fish caught depends entirely on the reel used. For bigger fish the reel becomes more of a necessity where gears and thicker line is needed. Whist for smaller fish a manual reel can be used.

So far you can now see the apparatus needed to carry out and as you can see if will add up to a small investment. This is why shopping online for your fly fishing tackle will financially better. I have found many websites that offer a wider selection at a lower price when compared to high street stores.

From this short article it is clear to see that fly fishing tackle consists of a fly rod, fly line and artificial flies and finally a fly reel. They are all designed and work in cohesion to catch certain fish you will not be able to with a normal rod, which is why fly fishing has that edge you cannot get in normal fishing circumstances.

Chris Knight on DVDs: Why Gone with the Wind is still 'The Best Picture Ever'
The story behind the making of the 1939 classic Gone with the Wind contains enough lust, jealousy and quest for power to drive a whole other movie. In fact, several have been made, including 1980’s The Scarlett O’Hara War, starring Tony Curtis as producer David O. Selznick and Morgan Brittany as actress Vivien Leigh, who was cast as Scarlett after a worldwide search that lasted the better part ...
