Fly Size

what size fly rod do i need for inshore/flats fishing in florida, ie trout snook redfish?

going in feb, some fly tips would help too!

8-9 WT that has an aluminum reelseat.

Make sure to have a decent aluminum reel with a good drag system, (You don't want to get spooled by that 20 LB Red because you've got a "mickey-mouse" reel).

Clousers in white/green, white/gold, white/red, Chartruese, Gold and Crystal are #1,(in my opinion!).They are inexpensive and most everything, (excluding perhaps Permit or Bones), will hit them!

"Critter Flys" like Umpqua's "Andersons McCrab" or "Crazy Charlies" work well for Shallow-water Reds and Trout.

You can also try "Decievers", "Bend Backs", & "Cockroaches", Etc.

Poppers and "Foam Flys" work excellent for Trout.

If your a Fly-tying guy you can EASILY make some Clousers and save yourself a ton of money. After you lose 4-5 Clousers,(which go for about $3-$5 a piece in a Flyshop), to Spanish Macs or Trout you start thinkin' it would be cheaper to BUY a fish dinner than to try and catch one! (lol)

Realize, Reds & Trout aren't as "picky" as freshwater Trout/Salmon. Bendbacks, Decievers, Etc can & WILL work but they aren't cheap and you lose them just as quick as any other fly!

Colors: Variations of Gold, Chartruese, White, Red work well.

Hope this helps ya? Good luck!

Fly Fishing Rods - Ideal Way To Catch Fish

To catch fish one has to use a fly fishing rod which is a part of the angling tackle. A fishing line is attached to a flexible long rod or pole at one end and the other end has a fishing hook attached to it. This fishing hook has the bait on it with which to lure the fish. Fishing rods come in different sizes, the length of the rod depends on how far you want to throw the bait and also on the kind of fish you are planning to catch. The rods vary from 2 to 16 feet in length and the longer rods have a better mechanical Fishing rods differ in length and in action.

What is a fly fishing rod?
Fly fishing rods which are used to throw a fly are very flexible, thin and long. The fly is generally secured on with foam, fur, feathers, or any other lightweight stuff. A fly rod utilizes the load of the fly line for throwing. A “leader” is normally secured to the fly line at one end, and the fly is tied to the other end. To decide on the size of the rod, you would have to consider the kind of fish that you are planning to catch, the weather conditions at the time when you are fishing and what the line weighs. If you are using a large or heavy line, you could go in for flies of a bigger size or weight. The fly rods are accessible in several varying line sizes ranging from O to 16. The smallest size is used for trout and pan fish which are fresh water fish and the larger ones are used for salt water fish.

There are usually no handles or butt sections on fly fishing rods. This prevents obstruction while casting the fly. A spey rod has a lengthier handle on the rear side but is also a fly rod of a different size. The spey rod is used for catching fish in saltwater, or in big rivers to haul salmon or steel head fish.

Rod flexibility or stiffness in the rod
Action is the quantity of flexibility that the rod provides or rigidity of the rod. For smaller fish that weigh less, you would require a slow-action fly fishing rod which would have the maximum amount of flexibility. Though these are very accurate in casting, they are not very easy for beginners to handle. Beginners could use a medium range fly fishing rod which would be much easier to control. The more flexible rods would bend more at the tip and in the middle. These rods are for use in long range or short range casting. For the bigger fish it is better to use fishing rods that are stiff and very stiff and have a fast-action. This again is not easy for a fresher in the fishing game to handle as they are not very accurate. Fly fishing rods can be picked up off the shelf from many marketing agencies, but custom built rods are a popular past time amongst fly fisherman.

Fly Line Trout
stream trout fishing question about bait?

ok now i know where to find trouts, but the question is, what is the best bait for that? also... i think this stream holds only small ones, so wouldn't the fly kind of in line spinner bait little bit too big for them?

trout worms for live bait work
however for hard baits, i would use inline spinners and spoons. For spoons, i would almost use either an all silver or all gold spoon.

Fly Line Trout article

Spool Fly Reel
my fly lines dont sit straight on water, how can i make them stay in a taught line.?

i have changed over to a more larger spool so theres less coil up .im currently using lureflash large arbor reels.

Fly line has a lot of memory in it. It remembers the coil of the reel (spool memory)and thats why so many curves on the water. That memory also inhibits your casts as it causes more friction in your rod guides. The best way to remove some of the spool memory is to simply find a grassy spot and strip line from the reel and then give each arm length a good serious tug with both hands. I do not recommend you wrapping the line around a tree as you may well turn and expensive dry fly line unintentionaly into a poor excuse for a sinking line.

Fly Fishing Line to Line Knots : Tying Blood Knots Using Fly Fishing Line

Wulff Fly Line article

Fly Line

if I use a 4lb breaking strain leader on my fly line, what would the breaking strain of the tippet be?

I'm guessing that it would be a bit less so that you only lose the very end of your leader if you are snagged or snapped. Would that be right?

Yes that would be right but when you get into that light of line or tippet, it changes to an "x" value (ex...4x tippet) The lower the "x" value, the thicker the line..2-3 lb test would be about a 5x tippet depending on the manufacturer. (I'm not sure why they don't use a universal value for this.)

Fishing Rods - Ensuring A Perfect Fishing Experience For Any Diehard Fisher

Modern day fishing rods have many modern features incorporated into them which were not found on earlier primitive cane poles. Nowadays, fishing rods have reels which help in retrieving the hooked fish.
A more sophisticated and complex development happens to be the spinning rod in which the whole rod revolves around its axis except for the handle. This provides a great deal of flexibility in fishing fishes which struggle a lot.
Like the old school cane rods, modern day rods are thick at the bottom (handle) and gradually taper towards the tip. This simple design allows flexibility and stability of the whole rod.
Specifications and Types of Rods used in Fishing
A classic fishing rod usually measures 6 or 16 feet (2 or 5 m) and their ability to tolerate strains also varies. The length mostly determines the amount of force which the rod can withstand without breaking during fishing.
Cane Poles
Cane poles are probably the smallest and least sophisticated fishing gadgets available. It is generally made of bamboo or similarly flexible wood with an extremely basic fly line fixed to it.
Unlike their advanced cousins, cane rods have no reels or other equivalents to reel in caught fish. This is why it is called angling.
Spinning Rods
These are the most popular rods in use today. These can be used for both lightweight as well as heavyweight fishes and have been proven to be best suited for fishing bass, trout and walleye. These vary from 5 to 7 feet.
These are regularly used competitively in bass fishing due to their high flexibility and stress and strain tolerance. Not only can these rods tougher and bigger fly lines but they can stabilize these lines as well which avoids tangles.
Jigging Rods
These are ideal for heavy baits and lures, most notably while trailing the lines at about 200 feet below the surface of the sea. These are made of modern solid materials and as a result are very heavy. These are used in locations where the ocean currents alternate during fishing.
A few fishing locations have erratic currents below the surface. This is the reason why the bait and the fly lines need to be held in place. Disturbed lures scatter the fish and the lines need to be strong enough to withstand the currents below the surface of the sea.
These rods are used to target fishes like halibuts and cods which close to the bottom of the sea.

Choosing & Flying a Kite

<p>This section of the shop is here to provide you with the right information to choose the perfect <a href="http://www.skyhighkites.co.uk" title="SkyHighKites | Power Kites, Flexifoil, ATB Boards, Stunt Kites, Power Kites, Childrens Kites, Flexifoil, RC Flying Power Toys, Disney Kites | Sky High Kites">kite</a> for the flyer, some of our kites are suitable for very small children, while others should be given the greatest respect by competent adult pilots.</p>

<p>First of all we'll tell you a little about the different types of <a href="http://www.skyhighkites.co.uk" title="SkyHighKites | Power Kites, Flexifoil, ATB Boards, Stunt Kites, Power Kites, Childrens Kites, Flexifoil, RC Flying Power Toys, Disney Kites | Sky High Kites">kites</a> we sell..</p>

<h2>Mini Kites</h2>

<p>Generally these kites are no bigger than a foot across, ideally suited for the youngest flyers, they can fly in the slightest of winds and simple to fly, a single line attached to the kite means that they can be flown with ease. On the whole the Mini Kite range is the cheapest range of kites we stock, which also makes them great birthday presents for young children. As these kites are made and sold with young children in mind, safety is of paramount importance, their small size means even in a worst case scenario of the kite being crashed into someone it is unlikely to cause any injury. Please also read the section below on safe kite flying.</p>

<h2>Diamond Kites</h2>

<p>The classic kite shape, unchanged for centuries, but now available in a huge range of styles and sizes. The diamond is a suitable first kite for children and is a very easy to fly style of kite, although some consideration should be given to the size of the kite as we sell many different sizes of diamond kite and some of the larger kites may be unsuitable for smaller children. Diamond kites generally require only the slightest of breezes to fly and can reach a high altitude quite easily, most can also be easily adjusted for the angle of flying to ensure a stable flight in a wide range of wind conditions, although they are best flown in a moderate wind coming from a constant direction. Diamond kites can usually be disassembled easily by removing the horizontal strut, which makes them easy to store and transport. Please also read the section below on safe kite flying.</p>

<h2>Creature Kites</h2>

<p>Creature kites are available in a wide range of shapes and sizes, and as the name suggests they represent a creature, which could be something you'd expect to see in the sky, like a bird or butterfly or something you may not expect to see soaring through the air like an octopus or frog. Some are diamond in form, some are delta, but some are purely custom shapes to represent the creature. They are 99% single lined, and therefore an easy kite to fly for the novice pilot and very appealing to the young pilot. Usually requiring a moderate wind to fly they are a low drag kite which means they're not going to pull you about when you fly them but can easily reach a good height with little effort. Please also read the section below on safe kite flying.</p>

<h2>Delta Kites (Not to be confused with delta stunt kites)</h2>

<p>Delta kites are named after their delta-wing shape, a slanted triangle design, very aerodynamic and able to fly in very gentle breezes. Alike to a birds wings or an aeroplanes body. They are a single line kite and simple to fly, suitable for young pilots they represent a change to the standard diamond shaped kite and are more suitable than the diamond to changable winds, although not suitable for strong winds as they tend to 'corkscrew' in the air. Available in a wide range of sizes, shapes and colours they are a very fun kite to fly and will be an enjoyable gift for any child, check the size of the kite though as some are bigger than others and the larger ones may not be ideally suited for the youngest of pilots. Please also read the section below on safe kite flying.</p>

<h2>Box Kites</h2>

<p>Another age-old design, the box kite, flies in a different fashion to other kites in that the air passes through the kite to create lift rather than push against a solid face. They usually look as though they shouldn't fly, but in fact are one of the most graceful flying kites there are. Not available in as many forms as the diamond kite, but every one is beautiful in it's own way. They are suitable for children as they produce very little drag, but may also appeal to the adult flyers out there, in fact they are the ideal gift for active grandparents to accompany their grandchildren when they're flying their kites. <h2>Stunt Kites</h2>

<p>Getting a bit more complicated now than the previously mentioned kites, stunt kites get their name from their ability to perform tricks in the hands of the pilot, this is down to their 2 string control method, which by shortening or lengthening one of the strings by pulling or extending one of the control handles makes the kite take a different course through the air, practice will allow the pilot to perform amazing loops, dives and climbs with ease. Not the perfect choice for smaller children, but will be greatly received by older children, and also adults, for who we stock a wide range of high end stunt kites. When browsing our shop note that the stunt kites are divided into different sections; childrens, novice, advanced and expert, this is generally dictated by the size of the kite - the larger ones produce more pull and require more tug on the lines to perform their tricks. <h2>Power Kites</h2>

<p>Finally we reach the cutting edge of 21st century kiting - The power kite, ever more popular and our best selling kites. <a href="http://www.skyhighkites.co.uk" title="SkyHighKites | Power Kites, Flexifoil, ATB Boards, Stunt Kites, Power Kites, Childrens Kites, Flexifoil, RC Flying Power Toys, Disney Kites | Sky High Kites">Powerkites</a> are named for just that reason - they take the maximum power from the wind, flying a power kite is not about watching it gracefully soar into the air, it's all about the drag. Even the smallest power kite can produce an outstanding amount of pull, and the largest can even make you take off! Always take care when choosing a power kite that the person you're buying it for will be able to cope with it. Safety is of maximum importance when flying a power kite and that's why we stock a wide range of safety equipment to accompany the power kites, such as kite killers (specially designed wristbands which will allow the kite to drop out of the sky in an emergency), and a range of protective body wear; like gloves, pads and helmets. We recommend that you work your way up through the sizes of power kite and don't just jump in at a huge 6 metre kite without prior experience. Safety aside, power kites are popular for one reason, they're so fun to use, whether you fly it on it's own or combine it with an ATB (off-road kite powered skateboard) or a buggy, they produce a huge amount of power which is very exciting to be at the end of. Smaller power kites tend to be 2 lined, whilst larger 'traction' kites are generally 4 lined, which require some form of handles or harness to fly them, sometimes these are supplied with the kite or they are available seperately. Again we have to stress the safety point with power kites, fly safely, know your limits and most of all choose the time and place to fly your power kite with the greatest of care, for yourself and other people. <h2>Safe Kite Flying</h2>

<p><strong>Location</strong> - Select a location that is free of obstruction such as houses and trees that can pose a danger to your kite and the public, and even more importantly do not fly your kite anywhere near power lines, substations or airports. Make sure wind conditions are right for your particular kite. Also make sure that as well as preventing damage to yourself and your kite, that you are going to fly in an area where you are not going to cause harm to anyone else or any wildlife, a beach is a perfect place, but make sure that there are no people around you if you are using a large or powerful kite. Also be aware of changing weather conditions, if you think there may be a storm approaching, quickly and carefully cease your flying activities, a kite can act as a lightning conductor when it is damp, and even if there's no lightning, excessive winds can damage or destroy your kite, or just pull it from your hands, which in the case of children can be very upsetting.</p>

<p><strong>Launching</strong> - With the wind at your back, take the kite about 50 feet or more downwind and have a friend hold it up, pulling the line tight. As your kite catches the wind, pull on the line handle until the kite gains altitude. Smaller kites can be launched from a smaller distance than this. Ensure you quickly give the kite lines some length after launch as the wind tends to swirl close to the floor and can quickly bring your kite back down. Ensure that there is no chance of wrapping the lines around another person or yourself as this can be dangerous in changable wind conditions.</p>

<p><strong>Landing</strong> - Release the tension on the line of your kite and this will allow it to drift to the ground, quickly retreive or immobolise your kite as it can easily take off again in the right conditions. Choose a suitable place away from water and busy public places for this. You may also find that you can just wind your kite back onto the string and as your kite is approaching the ground it can be caught and held for you while you finish winding it up.</p>

<p>Above everything else USE YOUR COMMON SENSE, and constantly be aware of your environment, the wind is always changing and can only be guessed at. Keep aware of other people coming close to you and always supervise young children when flying kites. When you follow the necessary safety steps kite flying can be one of the most enjoyable pastimes all year round. Thank you for reading - and fly safely.</p>

Fly Lines

People watch fly fishing on television and they think that beginner fly fishing must be very easy because it looks like that on television. First of all what you are watching on television is not beginner fly fishing, that is fly fishing being done by professionals with years of experience who have worked on and perfected techniques that take years and years to get right.

Secondly it is television and the chances that everything went that well in the first take are probably pretty slim. Television has a way of dressing things up so that it all looks so appealing and easy to everyone at home and this is where this notion that beginner fly fishing is so easy comes from. Well, beginner fly fishing isn't easy and here are some valuable tips you will need to get you started.

For equipment you need a pole, a reel, special fly fishing line, and a fly. Many people make their biggest mistake with beginner fly fishing at the line. Fly fishing line is thicker and heavier that standard fishing line for a couple of reasons. The first reason is that you do not use sinkers or lures in fly fishing so there is nothing to weigh the line down. Therefore the line itself needs to be heavy so you can fly cast it properly. It is also thicker because you need to cast with accuracy and that is hard to do with lighter line. So make sure that for your beginner fly fishing expedition you get the proper supplies and tools to get the job done.

Don't Skimp

Many people will attack beginner fly fishing with a mind to catch fish and no mind on the equipment they will use to get the job done. Never skimp on your equipment because if you buy cheap equipment and it fails on you at the beginning of your trip then you have a long fishing trip ahead of you. Get the best reel you can afford and the best pole you can find. You can ask someone at the sporting goods store but you are better off asking someone you know that fishes because sporting goods store clerks love to see people in beginner fly fishing and try to sell them stuff they don't need.

Fly casting is about the most difficult thing you can ever do and it will require practice. Make sure you take the time to get used to casting the fly line and get used to fly casting in general because it does take some practice.

If you are a beginner to the sport of fly fishing, you may need a bit of a boost when it comes to the gear needed to get started. The right fly fishing equipment is essential to bringing home a mess of fish for that fish fry you have been planning and it is definitely beyond the rod and reel stage. You also need lines, leads and flies as well as a variety of gear you would wear on your own body.

The Fly Rod and Reel

You cannot fly fish without the proper fly fishing equipment like the rod and reel and you definitely should not skimp on them. A great rod is necessary as it can make all the difference in landing an accurate cast, no matter what the weather or what you are planning to catch. The reel is more than just a tool which holds line you cast in and out; it can be the difference between the one that got away and the one that is being dredged in seasoned cornbread mix for your fish fry.

Fly Line and Flies

Another important part of fly fishing equipment is the fly line in addition to the leaders and tippets used on them. The weight of this line makes the difference between a good casting and one that just sinks like a stone in the water where you are fishing. You have to take into the account not only the type of fish you want to catch but also the windy conditions which may interrupt the proper casting.

Of course, the flies themselves are an essential when it comes to fly fishing equipment and you can buy them or learn how to tie your own. You can find flies that resemble bugs, insects, larvae, tiny fish and yes, even real flies. However, you should be acquainted with the various food items that each type of fish likes to eat before paying for the flies to stock your fly fishing equipment supply.

Personal Accessories

Boots, waders, vests and even sunglasses are other fly fishing equipment pieces you could add to your arsenal of fishing goodies. If you are planning to fish in warm waters, you can probably get away with just the wading boots as they will protect your feet and provide the much-needed traction if you plan to traverse through fishing holes with rocks.

Cold water streams, rivers and other bodies of water necessitate fishing waders – either to the hip or chest – as part of your fly fishing equipment needs. Fishing vests are also handy as they can hold your extra line, flies, pliers and other tools which make fly fishing a whole lot easier without having to traverse back and forth to the banks of your river or stream to rifle through a tackle box.

Fly fishing equipment can be pared down for budgetary reasons or beefed up if you have the expendable cash to spend on your new hobby. What you should not skimp on however are the fly fishing rod, reel, flies and line as they are key to your fishing success.

Before spending a ton of money on equipment and heading out to the water, it will pay to receive some fly fishing instruction to prevent becoming frustrated with the sport. One of the most difficult aspects of fly fishing is learning to cast the line accurately. An angler can learn a lot about the sport of fly fishing by reading books about the types of rods and reels and which ones to use in what bodies of water, but no amount of reading will replace fly fishing instruction when it pertains to casting.

With regular fishing, the lure or bait attached to the end of the line is cast into the water with the line following its trajectory. With fly fishing, the bait is seemingly weightless and if the angler attempts to cast the fly, it will go nowhere. Instead, fly fishing instruction will teach them how to cast the line onto the water, allowing the fly to follow the line.

It is similar to whipping the garden hose to remove a kink and the flow of the hose from the hand to the other end of the hose is essentially how the fly line is cast. With fly fishing instruction, the angler can learn how to pull the line from the reel with one hand and whip the pole behind them and over their head to send the line flying to the desired location.

Practice Leads To Fly Casting Perfection

Like most aspects of many sports, the only way to get better at something is to practice and with fly casting, the same is true. Regardless of how much fly fishing instruction a person receives it will take lots of practice to learn to place the fly exactly where they want it to land. Using dry flies places the fly on the surface of the water making it easy to see if the target was hit.

When using wet flies, or submersible flies, the idea is to cast slightly further than the desired location and letting the fly sink to the proper spot on the bottom. Once the new angler has the casting down, they can supplement their fly fishing instruction about the types of flies to use in different waters to catch more fish.

They can also obtain fly fishing instruction on the stages of the flies from birth to adulthood and at what stage the fish expect to see a particular bug. This is also useful in determining when to use which fly to increase the chance of catching more fish.

Instead of talking about the one that got away, perfect your fly fishing knots and land that next catch during your fly fishing trip. While there are quite a few fishing knots that you can learn, just a few are needed to see you through your entire fishing experience. Many people new to the sport of fly fishing often lose the fish they hook due to fly fishing knots becoming unraveled.

Practice makes perfect and learning to tie fly fishing knots is a definite must if you plan to make a go of this sporting hobby. Home is the best place to start the process as it is much better taking your time there than it could be to try to tie a knot while maintaining your footing in a stream or along a riverbank. Below are a few fly fishing knots to learn more about and what they should be used for.

The Arbor Knot

There is a section of line called the backing which is a strong piece that connects the actual fishing line to the spool backing in the reel. Among the fly fishing knots, the arbor knot is the most common for this type of task and fairly easy to accomplish. This backing line is typically made of Dacron and attached to a monofilament fly line and will keep a huge fishing from totally peeling out all the line in your reel.

The Albright Knot

When you attach your Dacron backing line to your regular fly line, you need fly fishing knots that will stand strong with two different materials while still having the ease in sliding through your guides without stalling your reel. You want a knot that will hold on the chance that you hook a large fish that has the tendency to run through your line all the way into the backing line.

The Nail, Double Surgeon and Clinch Knot

The nail knot is the best for connecting your leader line which allows your fly to flip during a cast to your main fly line. Among the fly fishing knots, the nail provides maximum accuracy for straight casting. The double surgeon fly fishing knots are for connecting your leader line to your tippet, which is the section of line between your fishing line and your leader line. Tippets are important for controlling the drag of the entire line during a cast so double surgeon knot is important.

The clinch knot is, well, the clincher, the end of fly fishing knots when you are adding fishing line and flies onto your rod. The clinch knot connects your fly specimen to the tippet so it is super important to make sure that this knot is strong so no fish are lost to an unraveling knot.

There are clinics, how-to videos and books that can show you step-by-step the process for tying fly fishing knots. It is up to you as to choosing which avenue to pursue as everyone learns differently, whether it is via a visual through videos or hands-on in a clinic.
