Start Building Your Own Fly Rod

Ever thought of building your own Flyrod? This could be just one of the hobbies that sprout out of the marvellous sport of Fly Fishing, your own custom built rods. Difficult option I hear you say, but with a little research, practice and a good measure of patience, you will be capable to build a rod that can be the envy of your friends.

There are also a lot of benefits to constructing and designing your own rod. Most importantly it can save you a lot of money, as it is often cheaper to build a flyrod according to your own specs. This includes the colour of the wrapping, the casting action, length of the blank and the respective components to add to the completed product. Secondly you will find it very rewarding when you start catching your first fish with the fly rod you have designed and built by yourself.

Before purchasing your rod blank, you have to research what blank you would like to use for the new rod. You got to consider the various characteristics of each blank, like the rod action which comes in slow, intermediate or fast, this naturally will all depend upon your casting style.

Then you must decide what rod components you want. Depending on the size of your hand, you got to consider the various custom cork grips available on the rod builders market today. You can purchase the raw grip and mould it yourself, or just order the completed product that comes in different contours like full wells, reverse-half wells, cigar and super fine.

Now we got to look at the reel seat to complete the grip arrangement. Again there are countless alternatives available to pick from. These reel seats are constructed from different exotic woods, metals and other synthetic materials. They come in configurations like down-locking, up-locking and also sliding rings for the very light rods.

This is followed by the stripping guide, a set of guides (where the fly line winds through) and a correctly sized tip top to fit the rod tip thickness. You can choose between single foot or snake guides depending if you going to fish for light or heavy fish. The guides come in light wire, ceramic or titanium coated versions. The light wire snake guides are the best option for your very light rods. You can also opt for a hook keeper to keep the fly in place when not casting.

To complete and fit all the components to your new customized rod you'll require wrapping thread in the color of your choice and rod wrapping varnish to coat the thread. Look for good rod builders' epoxy to put together the rod seat and bonding the reel seat and cork grip to the rod blank. Optionally you can also purchase some color preserver to preserve the look of your wrapping tread and cork seal that strengthens the grip and keeping it from deteriorating from continues use over time.

Building your own Fly-rod is an first-class idea to past time on weekends, particularly in the winter when the fish is scarce. You can also turn this hobby into a profitable side line by building and selling customised rods to other fisherman.

Fly Fishing: All The Rods You Need

The modern period has been dominated by the development of new materials, and there is no doubt that without plastics, fly fishing as we know it would be unrecognizable as a sport, although the basic principles would be the same.

Glass-fiber rods first appeared in the late 1940's, but it took a while for the new material to be adopted. Suppliers showed varying degrees of enthusiasm for the material. Hardy's first glass fiber rod was built in 1954, and after a period in which glass and cane uneasily coexisted, their first carbon fiber rod followed in 1976. Rod weights plunged, reaching the point where line weight became a consideration in rod handling. A modern fifteen foot carbon fiber rod typically weighs around the pound mark, and a nine-foot rod three and a half ounces.

If anyone wonders why fiberglass did not replace split cane overnight, the answer lies in the table. Glass rods weighed much the same as their split cane equivalents, and offered the fisherman few advantages other than price. Carbon fiber, on the other hand, approaches half the weight of either split cane or glass. Once the technical problems of using the new material had been solved, carbon fiber rods entered mass production and neither of the older materials could offer any contest. Cane was swept away by the mid nineteen eighties, although it is making something of a comeback on aesthetic grounds.

The Fly Line. As with rod development, the post-war period was dominated by the development of new materials. The taper on these lines could be controlled to a precise amount, and the invention of methods of altering the specific gravity of the PVC coating (and hence its buoyancy) gave the product greater flexibility than anyone had ever dreamed of in a fly line.

The Reel. We are very nearly up to date on the subject of gear, but is one small piece of the jigsaw puzzle missing. At the beginning of the modern period, it was unusual to find fly reels with exposed rims. The last twenty years have seen a surge of nostalgia, and it is fascinating to see the designs appearing that imitate reels of a century ago.

The Salmon Fly. In a sign of growing American dominance in the field, hair-winged patterns didn't take long to make the transfer across the Atlantic. The hair-wing had become a significant influence on British patterns by the 1960s, with many traditional patterns being adapted to allow hair-wing ties. The origins of the tube fly are less certain. We know that North American native people tied lures for salmon on quills as long ago as the nineteenth century, but the idea seems to have entered mainstream salmon fly fishing during the 1940s.

There is an interesting post-script to the development of the hair-wing salmon fly. Fishermen took a long while to give up their affection for the fully-dressed 'gaudy' fly, and it was commonly stocked by quite ordinary tackle shops well into the late 70's and even early 80's. As it became harder to find fully-dressed flies, collectors moved in, and a substantial market in "specimen-tying" began to emerge.

Spring Time Fly Fishing Gear Tune-Up - Clean Those Fly Lines

There are an almost endless array of fly lines available, some which cost extraordinary amounts. If you have invested money in a quality line, you will want to ensure that it lasts for as long as possible.

The single most important thing you can do is keep it clean. After each trip, take a little time and rinse your line with soap and water. Stay away from detergents and use a mild handsoap. Detergents tend to dry out the line and could result in your line developing cracks in the outer layer. This of course will hasten damage to the inner core of the line.

For some years, there has been a debate about the use of Armorall® and other similar products. Fly anglers who have used it discovered that it seemed to make their lines slicker. Others I have talked to have suggested that this is just a short term advantage and over time the chemicals in Armorall® will damage lines with regular use. I am not a chemist, and neither have I conducted any personal studies on the matter so I can't advise you one way or the other. Bob Kloskowski of the International Fly Fishing Association interviewed Bruce Richards of Scientific Anglers and asked him specifically about using Armorall®. Here is what Richards had to say on the matter:

"Armorall and 333 contain some plasticizers and lubricants and will lubricate the lines surface, temporarily. They also contain a small amount of detergent that theoretically would reduce line life, but the affect would be minimal. These products can be used without noticeable negative affect, but the positive affect of lubrication is very short term as the product washes off quickly." - 1997 Interview on NBC

Before you do head out for the first time this season, you might want to inspect your fly fishing lines for signs of cracking or even cuts. I remember some years ago, while casting on a windy day and getting into one of those cursed tangles where my leader caught my line and discovering that the leader had actually cut through the outer layer of the line. I was still able to fish the line that day, but replaced it before the next trip out.

Regardless of what sort of dressing you use on your line, the main thing is to keep it clean! Your fly line(s) is a very important part of your fly fishing gear.

Shimano TLD: The Best Shimano Reels You Could Find

Fishing enthusiasts everywhere, whether they are into fishing as a hobby or a sport, can now enjoy one of the best fishing reels made for the industry-the Shimano TLD. Whether you enjoy freshwater fishing or saltwater fishing, there is a variety of Shimano TLD reels available for you to choose from. As always, Shimano has certainly pushed the bar when it comes to innovating and producing their various Shimano reels. Each Shimano TLD reel is created after undergoing thorough research and tests, finding a way to improve on the old features, and perfecting its catching ability. Ample time was given in the development and creation of the Shimano TLD, and all of that has paid off, as it becomes one of the best reels you could find for both beginners and professionals alike. There are several types of Shimano reels you to choose from.

Which One Do You Prefer?

Shimano is one of the leading manufacturers of fishing reels today. To accommodate different kinds of fishing enthusiasts, they have offered several types of fishing reels you can choose from. Here are some of the main Shimano reels you can opt for.

1. Front Drag Reels. This type of Shimano reels is capable of spool micro adjustment that makes it capable of fitting into the line. It is more advance than most reels available today.

2. Fly Reels. These fly reels are known for their beauty as much as their function. Its precision is unmatched by most of its competitor in the market today.

3. Big Pit and Long Cast. This was initially created with beachcasters in mind. Its main feature is its big cranking power and durable frames. The spool system is also superb and allows for hauling in big fishes. This is mainly a favorite type of reel for those who favor catfish, pikes, or even carps.

4. Baitcasting Reels: This type of reel is small, compact, and lightweight. This is best used for lure fishing.

Fly Fishing Gear- Customized Gear For The Fairer Sex

Years back it wasn't very common to see a lady trudge all through the water hunting for a few trophy fishes. This is not the case anymore. If you are regularly fishing, you would have noticed most women in the area and field of fishing with their best. Today women are not just greatly involved in the various sports or workforce, but also the hobby of fishing. Most of the fishing companies today, have made a note about the rise in ladies anglers and have started producing several lines which are geared towards the ladies fish lovers. Women too, love the outdoors similar to men. It is a myth about a lady not liking sports such as fishing and being helpless. These are ridiculous statements. Quite many women prefer the fishing and hunting experience, as it gives them the extra time along with their partner.

Among the ladies, Fly-fishing seems to be the most popular fishing methods. You would often find women in their caps and wading boots reeling them in. The gears of Fly fishing range in styles and weights, which becomes extra efficient for the lady fisher. Moreover, instead of borrowing heavy fishing rods from their husbands women today, enjoy the graphite rods which are often lighter. Shorter rods also become very helpful since women usually are not equally tall like their male counterparts. Varied graphite rods could be used for that ultimate experience of fly fishing.

The different rods of fly fishing gear could be bought suit the size of wrist and hand of the fairer sex. The playing field is now equaled since women are able to fish with the similar kind of fly fishing gear which is dedicated to their frame. Men need to know that women today are taking these equality rights! There would be no creepy or nasty crawlers to hook with fly fishing; just with the artificial fly, you set off to get your fish.

Instead of borrowing the oversized shirt from your husband along with a life jacket which is often is two times bigger, there now is a line of accessories available for the ladies. Wading boots, life jackets, shirts, caps, and coveralls for that in-water experience are now available. The Fly fishing gears have changed drastically since several years now and are better now considering that even women are included.

It is true that the usual fly fishing gear when the bait, weights, and along with other incidentals would never change from female to the male angler. The similar artificial flies could be used; however, many of the ladies' are colorfully designed for the incredible eye. Women have the similar equipments to allow them with all the pleasure and relaxation with fly-fishing. As fishing is one of those special hobbies that is always equal to both men and women.

Question by kelhalla: Has anyone bought fly fishing gear online?
My father needs a new fly fishing reel - so I was wondering. This one has some good articles and fly reels it looks like http://www.classicflyfishing.com/

Best answer:

Answer by Chadd
I've bought quite a lot of fly fishing stuff online, but I've never really bought something "blind." That is, I've never researched a major purchase online and bought it unless I've at least looked at it and handled it in a store. I've always picked what I wanted (a rod or reel or whatever) by trying it out first at a store or by borrowing a friend's, then purchasing online. Online sellers can often offer bigger selections and better prices than brick-and-mortar shops. While I try to support my local retailers, sometimes you've got to go online to get what you want at the best price.

I think I've looked at classicflyfishing.com a time or two but have never bought anything there. I've heard praise for those Hardy reels but they're a little out of my price range -- I'm not sure I've ever even seen one. So far I've had no trouble catching fish on reels in the $ 100 price range, but if that's what your dad wants and you're going to get him one, all I can say is -- you're a very good son. Heh.

Choosing a Fly Rod the Right Way

Trout fishing is such an enjoyable and exhilarating water sport. Whether you go for river trout, brook trout or lake trout, you will always need a fly rod to be able to catch your favorite trout. The fly rod is the angler's best partner in trout fishing. Without the proper fly rod, trout fishing is useless and the angler will go home empty handed and disappointed.

Trout enthusiasts have varying trout interests. Reasons for trout fishing also vary. Some consider it an outdoor pursuit, while others would simply want to relax. Whatever the interest or reason is, trout fishing has hooked a lot of anglers who's ultimate aim is to go home with a perfect catch. Commonly, anglers use the fly fishing method.

Here are some basic things to consider when choosing a fly rod for your trout fishing adventure.

Fly Rod Weight - By weight we do not mean how much the rod actually weighs but instead how much the line weighs. Choosing the proper line weight for the particular trout you are fishing for is essential. Line weights run from 1-14 with 1 being the lightest. The most versatility line you should use is a 5-6 as it will allow you to catch small and large trout alike.

Fly Rod Size - In terms of rod length, most fly rods are 7-10 feet long. The 7 ft. rod would be the right length for trout fishing in smaller bodies of water and at areas where bushes grow. Use the 9 ft. fly rod for larger and clear areas to get the right distance and keep the fly away from the water and so as not to spook the trout.

Rod Action - This refers to the bending capability of the rod during casting. Fast rods have tips that allows for long casting distance and trout fishing on windy days. Skilled anglers use fast action rods. Medium speed is the most preferred. Flexibility extends down the rod and the casting distance is average. Slow action rods are those that bend up to the grip. However, these types of rods are only good for trout fishing in very small creeks.

Hand Grip - Fly rods come with a variety of handle grips. Choose a fly rod that you can comfortably hold in your hand for your trout fishing.

Choosing a fly rod that perfectly suits you will help you to have fun while you are trout fishing.

Question by Bradley V: What is a recomended starter fly rod and reel for steelhead fishing?
I chuck spawn and some flys already with the spinning rod. I fish at least 3-4 times a week as NE Ohio weather allows and want something to hold up but I don't know exactly what I want in a fly rod. I have been told a 10' 7-8 wt. Websites would be nice as well.

Best answer:

Answer by militar0607
for flyrods the best for small fish and fresh water is 4wt and if you want anything bigger than that i would recommend what you thought a 8 wt. have 2 reels one set up with a dryline and another with sinking line.

What Is The Best Fly Rod For The Money

There is not any one "fly rod" that is the "best for the money."   Fly rods come in all different sizes that are made for a specific type and size of any particular fish, and/or a certain style that is to be used.  We must also mention price, which varies considerably depending on quality, and quality has gone up a lot in the past 20 years. This discussion is aimed at helping you find the best fly rod for the money, because it is only the best if it is the right size and style for that targeted fish, and of course if you can afford it.

Size

First of all, let's talk about size.  The person that tells you that size doesn't matter is definitely the person that you shouldn't be listening to.  Size is the number one factor that will determine every rod choice that you purchase throughout your life, and, if this is you first fly rod purchase, there are sure to be many more in the future.  It really is that fun, one fish will ultimately lead to another.

There is a size of rod that is made for each fish species and/or targeted size.  The fly rod size is measured by weight (wt), but not the weight you get from a scale.  It is just the term used to signify the size, where a 2wt is considered light gear, and a 12 or 14wt is considered heavy gear.  A 2wt would be a good choice for small trout in a small stream; where as a 14 weight would be used for a Marlin.  Then of course there are all the rods and fish in between.  You will want a rod that is sized for the fish you are after.  If the road is oversized, the fight you experience will not be what it could be.  Worse off, if the rod is undersized, you will struggle for control and risk damage to your gear.  Plus, the faster you can get the fish in, off your hook and back in the water, the better chance it will have at surviving unharmed; also so you can get your fly back in the water after another one.

Here is a list of rod sizes and the fish they are designed for:

                2wt        small trout, pan fish

4wt        trout, pan fish

6wt        bass, trout,

8wt        steelhead, bass, saltwater

10wt      salmon, steelhead, tuna, saltwater

12wt      saltwater, dorado, sail fish

14wt      saltwater, sail fish, marlin, shark

Style

Just like gear fishing, there are different styles that can be used to catch a particular fish.  Traditional style is what most people will enter into the fly fishing world with. There are also methods within this style that will be better suited with very specific rods used to fish a particular type of water.  For the most part though, we will stick with the more general focused rods for this discussion.  There are also Spey Fly Rods.  These require two hands and more advanced casting styles and are usually used for bigger fish such as Salmon and Steelhead in big rivers.  Therefore you will probably be after a traditional rod unless you are specifically targeting a spey rod.

Price

Over the past couple decades, fly fishing rods have increased in quality and price has followed suit.  Prices range from a cheap trout rod purchased at the store for .00, to a specialty bamboo rod with a price tag of more than 00.00.  Most fish sizes will have a rod to choose from in just about any price range.  Obviously you will get what you pay for, so be sure to keep that in mind.  Most midrange rods offer the best value and will have the quality to stand up to any reasonable request, but you may lack some comfortability when compared to the more expensive rods.  A typical price spread for a midrange rod is 0-0 depending on size.  High end rods will be in the 0 to 0 range and will offer superb feel and sensitivity.  Most midrange rods and, if not all high end rods will come with a lifetime, no questions asked warranty.  It is hard not to take advantage of this by purchasing a low end rod, as sooner or later we all break rods whether it be on fish or your truck door.

Now that you know the size and style of the fly rod you need, the next step is narrowing the results down to a particular rod, which, if you navigate to www.flyfishinggeararsenal.com, they will help you do so.  This site is loaded with useful information and will point you in the right direction to the best fly rod for the money, as well as other gear recommendations that we fly fisherman depend on so much.

Fly Fishing Equipment - The Basics For the Beginner

"What fly fishing equipment should I get?" I'm often asked that question by folk who are interested in learning how to fly fish. Sometimes, it seems so complicated. "Is it expensive?" is the second most often asked question.

Let's start with the second question first. While you can spend thousands of dollars on gear, you don't need to nor should you spend more than a couple of hundred dollars if you're just starting out. Depending on what conditions you will be fishing, you might even get away with less than that, too. I recommend that you speak with casting instructor who knows your area and what conditions you'll be fishing in at first. That person will be able to put you on the right track as to the specifics of what gear you should have.

To answer the question about what fly fishing equipment you'll need to get started, here are the basics. You can of course purchase much more, but why not wait before spending lots of money to find out if you'll enjoy the sport in the first place?

A fly rod A reel that will hold the line Line (usually a floating line will do fine if you're targeting small to medium size rivers) 8 lb. test monofilament that you will use for leader material Flies Clippers Sunglasses

Optional equipment when you are starting out:

Waders to keep you dry if fishing rivers A vest or bag to carry gear (and perhaps your lunch and a flask filled with something to drink if you are so inclined) Landing Net

And that's about it. The conditions you will fish will dictate the length of your rod as well as the weight of the line you will be casting. Most beginners can get away with selecting a rod in the 8 to 9 foot range and 5-6 line weight (wt.). Unless you will be after big fish, you can get by with a very inexpensive fly reel. All it does in most cases is hold the line for you. In many situations where the target fish are trout, you likely wont even need to use the drag on your reel. In most cases, tension is applied to the line with your hand.

Although many fly anglers have all sorts of systems for determining the correct leader thickness and taper, don't worry about that for now. Because the lure in fly fishing are very light weight, you are using the weight of the fly line and the ability of the rod to power the line forward when you cast your fly. Therefore, fly line is much thicker than the monofilament used in spinning or baitcast fishing. That's where the monofilament or leader comes in - it is tied to the end of the fly line, generally an 8 foot length is fine, and to the other end of the leader, you will tie your fly.

Although it is fun to tie your own flies, at this point it is probably best to obtain some from someone you know that ties up flies, or purchase them for a shop that sells them. If it is a local shop, they will be able to advise you as to what patterns that will be most likely to entice the fish to hit. At first, stick with nymphs or wet flies. Dry fly fishing can be a lot of fun, but I'd recommend learning to cast and catch fish with a fly rod using nymphs.

Sunglasses are a must when fly fishing! The last thing you want to do is damage your eye with a misplaced cast and a fly stuck in your eyeball. Think safety first, no matter what you are doing. If you have decided to also purchase a pair of waders, make sure you are familiar with the water you will be wading in.

There are a number of resources available to you to help you decide what fly fishing gear is best for you. Read reviews of the gear that is available to you, talk to other fly anglers, and perhaps the best advice of all: Hire a fly fishing instructor for at least a half day. This will help prevent you from forming bad habits that will be difficult to break later on.

Fly Fishing Apparatus

Fly fishing isn't just a normal way of fishing because it uses specific tools to catch fish. . The most common associated fish caught with fly fishing tackles is trout and salmon, however pike, bass and carp are being caught as well.

The basic apparatus in fly fishing is the fly rod, fly line, artificial fly line and fly reel. Each part of the tackle has its own vita role in catching fish. First is the fly rod which is used to cast the fly line. The length will vary between 7 to 10 feet depending on the environment where you are fishing. Usually, fly rod are made from graphite and fibreglass and in some cases bamboo. By using other materials, the fly rod will become lighter or heavier and it may also become stiff or bendy. Therefore, follow the intended materials for ht fly rod to work perfectly.

Another part is the fly line which is a plastic coated line that can be found in variety of thickness. They also range in color but usually, bright colored fly line is used to attract the prey that is intended to be caught.

Now let's go to the major part of the fishing tackle which is the artificial flies. They are made by tying hair, feathers, fur and other natural and synthetic materials onto a hook. Artificial flies range from bright lively colours in order to stand out, or darker colours to match the environment.

Another important part of the tackle is the fly reel. This one is used to hold the fly fishing line. The fish caught depends entirely on the kind of reel used. For bigger fishes, one should consider thicker lines and gears while for smaller fishes, a manual reel can be used.

How to Catch an Alligator Gar on a Fly Rod

For those avid sports fishermen, catching an alligator gar on a fly rod is a real challenge. To accomplish this task, you will need to put your lightweight fly rod away and prepare yourself for a fight that will thrill even the most experienced anglers.

Alligator Gar and Sharks

Depending on the waters you are fishing in, alligator gar can grow to more than two hundred pounds. If you like the challenge of a big fish, this one is it. To compare a fish to this size, you are talking about catching a fresh water shark so to speak. I realize they are not in the same species and sharks don't normally live in fresh water. That said. You will need to take the same precautions to catch a gar as to catching a shark.

Gar is a toothy creature and a predator. They are designed to catch and rip off meat. This fish is a leftover dinosaur of sorts. They are a species that are just as frightening to see in the water a shark while swimming. Imagine coming across an alligator gar while swimming. The truth is unless injured or trapped they will do you no harm.

Start Small: Needle Nose Gar

For those who would like to try these species out, I would recommend starting with smaller gar, the needle nose or other smaller gar. Fishing for those will not require real heavy tackle. To catch them you don't even need a hook.

Catching them without a hook seems unreal, but it can be done. By tying a not one end of a braided nylon rope and then combing the rest out into strands, you will do fine. You see gar have teeth and when they bite the line, they will roll. This will cause the line that is braided to wrap around their mouth, thus trapping it.

By throwing the braided line in front of them and jerking, it will give the impression that a small fish is either injured or trying to escape. This will resemble their normal prey. Try it. You will have fun and develop your sight casting as well.

Going for the Big Alligator Gar

For those who are gutsy enough to go for the big ones, similar type fishing gear for shark, or large salt-water fishing will work. If you do go for the gusto, it would be best to study up on alligator gar, the type of waters they congregate in etc.

Steel leaders will almost be a must. Don't forget they have very sharp teeth. Fishing for big alligator gar alone is just short of crazy. Too many things can go wrong and a buddy is essential to your safety.

Once you have everything in place, go out and try to catch a gar. When you do, you can be one of the few that caught an alligator gar on a fly.
