First one i will learn how to fly fish on it. Will mostly use it for trout and bass and such around 50 bucks

Cabela's Wind River series are good quality fly fishing kits that are inexpensive. They come setup so you can just tie a fly on the end and fish.

You can get a nice combo kit for around $135. Of course you'll need leaders, waders, boots, vests, flies, etc...

For $50 you might try looking for used equipment for sale.

Howdy, Dr. Business. Listen, you may want to narrow down your question. Washington State is home to some of the most incredible fly fishing waters in the lower 48 states. Suggestions for the best beginers fly rod?

I am looking for a fly rod to learn with. I am new to fly fish and know little about it.

I want to stream fish for brown and rainbow trout.

What length, weight, brand etc...also, any suggestions about the type of reel...also any insights on the type of line etc. would be great!

Recommendations:

#1 Go to a dedicated fly shop if you have one near you.
Avoid discount stores and most chain sporting goods stores.

#2 A good length/weight for the new trout angler on most streams would be 8 1/2' for a #5. This would NOT be the rig of choice to swing heavy streamers on large rivers or make delicate presentations on miniscule, overgrown creeks. But it would be practical for just about any other trouting situation.

#3 The big names (Winston, Sage, Scott, Orvis, Loomis, etc) all make quality rod series for the guy that isn't ready to drop big bucks on the flagship rods. What they lack in cosmetics is compensated with excellent tapers, good craftsmanship, and support. Some models are US made like their big siblings.

#4 A relatively recent tactic in fly rod design and marketing is to produce rods that are quite fast in action. They impress new anglers with their feeling of strength and power. But they usually lack the *feel* that experienced fly anglers want. Some are clubs. Some are nothing more than *underlined* (that is, the mfr states the rod is a 5wt, when in fact it is truly a 6 or even 7wt.). TFO rods come to mind. Avoid them for this reason and more.

#5 In connection with the comment #4, think about what your practical fishing distance will be and make sure the rod you select is comfortable casting at that distance. You don't want a cannon for trouting. Don't be duped by parking lot exhibitions of salespeople demonstrating the rod's distance capabilities.

#6 For a good, affordable line, look at Cortland's 444 (sometimes called the *peach* line). The 444 is a full length, high quality line with time-tested tapers. It's durable while remaining supple. The finish is excellent and will remain so for numerous seasons with proper care. The price remains fair after many years in production. There are some entry level lines available, but they're shorter in length and lifespan. Your line choice is very important. I'd recommend the purchase of a DT (double taper) line; you'll essentially have two lines to wear out (just reverse the line) rather than the single taper of a WF (weight forward). Yes, there is a reason that line mfrs and fly shops frequently recommend WF lines for situations where a DT will do equally well. Go cheap on the line and you might as well go even cheaper on everything else.

#7 You can get by with just about any single-action reel made today. There is no need to spend a lot of money, unless you've got lots to spend and you enjoy using high quality goods. Make sure your reel choice balances the rod. Some cheap reels are quite heavy due to their inferior materials and design and will thus create a rod/reel combo that feels off balance. Drag is unimportant. A click-pawl reel will do just as well as a disc drag model. At about $100, you can purchase reels produced from machined aluminum (like the Orvis BBS). For many years, buying a quality machined reel at such a low price wasn't possible. Now it is. These tend to be lighter than reels produced from alloy castings, and the tolerances and finish tend to be a bit better. If you want to save a few dollars buying something used, the reel would be the place to do so.

If you think fly fishing will be an activity you intend to continue, don't get to caught up in buying the perfect outfit initially. Lifelong fly fishers are still searching for "The Outfit" and love the pursuit. Choose items of good quality that fall well within your budget. You can spend the rest of your angling life finding the perfect rods and reels...after you know what suits you the best.

Where can I fly fish in the Colorado Rockies?

I'm going back to visit family in Castle Rock, CO, and I was hoping to do some fly fishing while there. I'd like to stay in the Denver-metro area, but I could travel a ways if need be. Does anyone have suggestions for that area?

lots of good places to go- if you want to stay local, best bet is the South Platte- closest top quality water.

If you don't mind driving, I would suggest:

Gunnison, East, and Taylor rivers. A few hours over to the west of Castle rock.

Willing to go a bit further yet? The Roaring Fork, and or Frying Pan.

The salmonfly and green drake hatches are coming up soon, call a fly shop and see whats hatching when you will be there.

Keep in mind hatches may be a bit earlier/later with the extra runoff this year.

Everyone knows the basics of fishing. There's a rod, reel, fishing line, hook, bait; you cast the line, wait for a bite, and reel in your dinner. I have been really curious about this sport for some time now. I've seen it done countless of times.

Tried it. Failed.

People have endlessly and tirelessly, with their utmost patience and understanding tried to rub off some fly fishing skills on me - but to no avail.

I have resorted to reading, for now. I decided that whatever I can't do, I might as well LEARN - even just in theory. It helps. I think of my self right now as "A work in progress".

A brief definition about some terms I need to know about fly fishing.

What is Fly Fishing?
Fly fishing is an ancient and distinct angling method, developed primarily for salmonids (trout and salmon, mostly) and now extended to other species such as pike, bass, and carp, as well as a wide range of salt water species.

Fly casting is gripping or holding a fly rod correctly and to adopt the correct stance to maintain comfort and balance. The most basic rule to casting is based on the way a clock looks. Your head points straight up to 12:00, your cast (the tip of your rod) should go back to 10:00 and then forward to 2:00, releasing your line at the end of the forward motion. It is a common mistake to dip the rod below those two positions and almost always ends in a line tangle!

Angler. (Does that have anything to do with Math? I hate Math!)
That would be YOU silly! Someday, IF you learn how to fly fish, you will be called an angler. A person catching fish or shellfish with no intent to sell, this includes people keeping the catch or people that practice the "Catch and Release" method (highly recommended).

The Essentials - If you don't have a complete list of these, you're NOT Fly Fishing!

Fly Fishing rods are long, thin, flexible rods sometimes made of bamboo, but more recently from man-made materials. Fly rods tend to have large diameter eyes (or guides) spaced along the rod to help control the movement of relatively thick fly line. To aid in the freedom of movement required to skillfully cast with a fly rod, there is usually little to no butt (handle) extending below the fishing reel. Although fly rods are mainly used for casting from fixed positions, they can also be used for trolling for fish.

Fishing Reel is a device used for the deployment and retrieval of fishing line using a spool mounted on an axle. They are used in conjunction with the fly rod and are attached to the base or handle of the rod.

Fishing line is any cord made for fishing. Important parameters of a fishing line are its length, material, and weight (thicker, sturdier lines are more visible to fish). The refractive index is also important—lines with a refractive index similar to water are almost invisible to fish. The most important parameter in deciding what line to use is its strength. This is the amount of weight the line can hold before snapping. One must balance the trade-off between strength and visibility.

Flies as Bait? Are you kidding?
Flies or Artificial flies are constructed — "tied" onto a hook with thread, fur, feathers and other materials — in sizes and colors to match naturally occurring food or simply to excite a fish. And to add more confusion, the names of flies: Wet and dry flies, nymphs, scuds, eggs, streamers, steelheads, bass flies, salmon flies,and saltwater flies.

You will be considered a well equipped fly fisher if you bring waders, wading boots, vest net, polarized sunglasses to protect your eyes and see through the reflection on the water, a hat for the harsh sun, sun block and bug dope (bug repellant) - if you don't want to be eaten alive by bugs before you even catch a fish!

Armed with the stuff I read, I went about to experience Fly Fishing without even going near a body of water.

Forget The Recession, Lets Go Fishing

Here's my top 5 Western States, spring "Bait Fishing holes" for Trout.

 

I'm not a fancy fly fisherman; I've tried it and just can't get the knack. I like to sit, relax and enjoy the surroundings while I fish. I also like to keep and eat what I catch.

 

I based my top spots on these factors; great fishing, great views and the ease of getting there.

 

So here goes;

Owyhee River.

Spring Fishing (before April), on the Owyhee River, in Southern Oregon is fantastic. This 10-mile stretch of river below the Owyhee Dam is just 30 miles from my home in Ontario, Oregon, or about 80 miles out of Boise. So here's a little local knowledge.

 

You may be saying, "This is a famous Fly Fishing spot"? Yes it is a favorite "Trophy Brown Trout" haunt for Fly Fishermen, but here's a little known secret, it is also open to "Bait Fishermen" and a skilled fisherman with bait can land more of these big Browns than the fly fishermen.

 

 This river has a rustic beauty all it's own, especially in early spring when the sparkling white snow still clinging to the valleys and hillsides. The river is low and slow this time of year and you can easily see the monster Browns rising for the bugs floating on the surface. There are hundreds of these Browns in every hole. You can easily catch a huge Brown Trout here, ranging from 2 lbs to 20 lbs and Rainbows 20 inches up.

 

Be advised you must immediately return the huge Browns to the river, but you can keep and eat any Rainbow Trout or Bass you catch. This is why there are so many monster Browns in these holes, they never leave the river; they just get bigger and smarter.

 

Legal "Bait Fishing" is allowed here, but you must have a thick skin, as you will get looks from the purest (Fly Guys) as they pass.  This river is very clean and free of the Lead Poisons prevalent throughout the Western Rivers, so you can safely eat the red meated Rainbows and the occasional Bass.

 

You can easily drive in and camp, right beside the river, free of charge. Be sure to pack out all you bring in and keep it clean. Just set up your chairs and do some relaxing "Bait Fishing" or you can put on your waders and chase the Browns up and down the river. Wading is simple along this shallow easily accessible river.

 

Bring your four-wheeler or canoe and easily traverse the long winding riverbanks. Make sure you pack a lunch and have plenty of bait, as the nearest store is 10 to 15 miles away.

 

Tip; try a Night Crawler and Split Shot, drifted in the current.

 

Horsethief Reservoir:

 In late spring try Horsethief Reservoir, just 10 miles above Cascade, Idaho.

 

This little lake is my favorite spot, spring, summer or fall. In the springtime, (Late April) right after "Ice-Off", the trout fishing is amazing. You can limit out in a hour with catch-able Rainbows from 8 to 14 inches, with the occasional 20 incher.

 

But that's not all, let me tell you a true story; In the early summer my friend, Scotty, and I, went to Horsethief for a day trip, traveling out of Cascade, where I was living. We set up right beside the Dam, our usual spot.

 

While lounging on a grassy bank, beside the pristine clear blue water lake, I was looking out at the tree lined far shoreline. Suddenly, a rush of waves and a dark blur in the water at my feet startled me. It took me a few minutes for me to realize that it was an Otter, rushing in to steal my stringer of fish. Sure enough the Otter had swiftly rushed in and stole my metal stringer and the five Rainbows caught that morning.

 

After calming down, I looked out across the lake and to my amazement, not 50 yards out, was an entire family of Otters frolicking and happily munching on our mornings catch. I've always wondered, "Was it legal to catch another five fish"?

 

A little later on, my friend Scotty was busy chasing a wild ring necked duck away from his tackle box, the duck kept trying to steal his bait. The ringed necked duck just wouldn't go away, he hung around all day, might have been because I tossed him tidbits every once in awhile.

 

We settled back down and caught a few more "Bows". I had replaced my stringer, making sure to tie it tight. I then laid back and was gazing up at a pair of Osprey's floating above us in the blue cloudless sky.

 

I was just slipping off for a nap when the water ten feet in front of us exploded, spraying both Scotty and me with water. An Osprey had dived into the lake, right in front of us, arose and flew away with a nice trout grasped tightly in its talons.

 

It was a special "wildlife day" that morning, and the experience was really unforgettable. Nature's at it's best is usually there every time I visit this wonderful lake. I've seen Deer, Elk, Moose and even a white Wolf at this high mountain retreat. This great fishing hole is easy to get to and sports many lakeside campgrounds. It has majestic scenery and the fishing is peaceful, quite and fruitful.

 

Tip; use Rainbow Power Bait, a small slip weight and a No.14 gold treble.

 

 

June Lake "Opening Day"

You'll find it in the High Sierras 50 Miles north of Bishop, CA.

"Opening Day" is the last Saturday in April. When I lived in Southern California, we never missed an opening day in the Sierras. We loved the excitement of the moment as thousands of California fishermen rushed to stake out their favorite holes.

 

June Lake is one of these opening day hotspots. It's another gorgeous high mountain lake with crystal clear water and forested banks. On "Opening Day" June Lake's Rainbows are huge, ranging from 12 to 30 inches. I've caught 6 to 8lb lunkers from shore on opening day.  

 

One opening weekend a group of us went up a day early to stake out our favorite spot, the park at the south end of the lake. In order to beat the crowds to this spot we slept out on the park grass next to our set up chairs. This was working out well except for the cold, April in the High Sierras brings below freezing weather at night. We were hiding down deep in our bags when the park sprinklers came on, washing us out and back to our camper to dry off and warm up. All except my son Joshua, he was sleeping in a waterproof down army mummy-bag. He slept through the entire watering and when we went back out we saw a solid sheet of ice over his entire bag, but he said he was warm inside.

 

That morning when the flare went off, we had our spot and began to fish. We caught several lunkers of 5 to 8 pounds. We entered them into the lakes fishing derby, but the contest winner for the day was over 10 pounds.

 

Tip; Try a slow retrieve with a white marshmallow on a No.12 treble with split shot.

 

Blue Mesa Reservoir

Near Gunnison, Colorado; at the South end under the highway bridge, in May.

 

May is absolutely a great time to fish this lake; if you're a shore fisherman you'll love the spot under the bridge at the Gunnison end near the rivers inlet. I've caught my limit of large Rainbows every time I've fished it in May.  Occasionally a shore fisherman ties into one of the huge Lake Trout inhabiting this lake, they can go up to 50 pounds.

 

My son Jeremy at 7 years old, caught a 4lb Rainbow under this bridge with a child's fishing pole, he brought it in all by himself.

 

In May and late summer, you can drive right up to the bridge along an access road cutting off the highway, but don't try it in June. In June the rains make the road a bog, I know, it cost me $100 to get towed out. You still can get there in June, just park off the highway and climb down the rocky side of the bridge.

 

Toss out green or rainbow Power-Bait next to the bridge pylons and wait. Watch your poll they hit hard.

 

 

Eleven-Mile Canyon

You'll find this canyon 70 miles west of Colorado Springs on the Upper Platte River.

 

This stretch of canyon is breathtaking; the river winds eleven miles up through the canyon until it ends at the Dam at Eleven Mile Reservoir.  This stretch of river is so beautiful that my wife and I have decided to have our ashes placed in these waters when we go to that fishing hole in the sky.

 

There is plenty of "drive in camp spots" along the river. The fish are usually smaller pan-sized Trout, but are plentiful and then there is that occasional lunker. You can also catch monster 40" pike that roam these waters.

 

What I like most about fishing these waters is that on a warm spring day you can hop over to one of the mammoth rocks in the river and drift a "Colorado Orange Indicator" and meal worm along the current and watch it drift for a 100 yards or until you get a strike.

 

When my youngest son, Jeremy, was a tot, I would tie a rope to his life vest and then around my waist. Off we would go rock hopping and fishing all day long.

 

All the waters in this general area are great in the spring, but if you've never visited the Platte River in Eleven Mile Canyon you're missing something special.

 

So forget about this recession, go fishing.

taking guns into Canada?

Six of us are going to Canada in mid September for a 4 day fly-in fishing trip. Our outfitter has told us that we are very likely to see quite a few moose on our trip. My question is this...as a precautionary measure I would like to a take a my brush rifle along just in case we do encounter an animal with ideas of his own where our well being is concerned. What exactly do I have to do to bring my rifle along? We will be driving in from the US. I found a pice of info saying that I have to declare my gun at my first point of entry, fill out a non-resident form and pay $50.00 dollars? IS this true, is it really that simple, am I likely to be hassled about bringing a gun and, maybe first of all, am I allowed to period?

Yes you can. I took a rifle & a shotgun on a combo hunt a few years ago.You must fill out the form needed. You can get them on line. Then you must stop at point of entry & an officer will check your gun after you pay your money. They will give you a peice of paper to show you did this then your good to go! But i would say if you use that gun & have no hunting licence & or permits & or out of season . YOU MAY BE IN A REAL HARD SPOT!
