ATWT: Horrible writing?

This shoow has been amongst my favorites for almost 30 years. I've loved watching this show help launch the careers of so many great actors. But the writing for the past year or so is horrible. How long do students in Oakdale go to school? How long is a tennis season and isn't tennis scholastically a fall sport? It's almost the fourth of July and Liberty and Parker still have homework....

On the same note, even though Parker and Liberty and filmed in front of an active school, Sage, Natalie and Faith are at summer camp....

Summer camp! The Snyder Farm was always the setting for the teen dramas because Emma always took in extra farm help. Where has Emma been?

Agreed, horrible writing over there. I haven't watched in three weeks. I don't find myself caring for the characters anymore. New-Lily isn't even the same character as the old one. It's all plot driven mess. None of the characters have a defined personality, none of the SLs make sense (especially the Luke/Noah mystery mess - really non-sensical), and the one part of the show I loved watching - the Brad and Katie romance - is no longer a romance but a game of Volleyball with Janet and Liberty. Ughhh, they need to hire new writers and give Lucinda and Henry and front-burning storyline ASAP. Although, honestly, I think I'm gone for good and doubt it will get better.

Axis Fly Rod
angular speed question?

A uniform rod of mass m1 and length L rotates in a horizontal plane about a fixed axis through its center and perpendicular to the rod. Two small rings, each with mass m2, are mounted so that they can slide along the rod. They are initially held by catches at positions a distance r on each side from the center of the rod, and the system is rotating at an angular velocity omega. Without otherwise changing the system, the catches are released, and the rings slide outward along the rod and fly off at the ends.

(a) What is the angular speed of the system at the instant when the rings reach the ends of the rod?

(b) What is the angular speed of the rod after the rings leave it?

I1 = (1/12)(m1)L² + 2(m2)r²
I2 = (1/12)(m1)L² + 2(m2)(L/2)²
ω2 = ω1(I1/I2)...(conservation of angular momentum)
This the answer for (a) and (b)

SAGE Z-Axis Fly Fishing Rods - Leland Fly Fishing Outfitters

Axis Fly Rod

Selecting the first fly-fishing outfit is the most difficult step once you have decided to participate in fly-fishing. Five essential items make up a fishing outfit. They are the line, rod, leader, reel and the fly. It is essential that each item of the outfit works in an efficient manner and is comfortable for your use. When all these items work together efficiently, the outfit is considered as balanced. Success in fly-fishing depends on the outfit, and therefore it is important to select the right outfit suitable for you. Some basic tips on how to select each of these items is given below:

1. The fly fishing line:

The first item to select is the line. This is because the line weight is the important factor. There are many different types of lines available and it is essential to choose the right one. The line weight designation in the code should match the one on the rod, which will be used. Beginners in fly-fishing can select the double tapered line, which is most commonly used. The various types of lines include weight forward, level line, tapered line and shooting taper. The floating function should be chosen for your first line. A floating line would be suited to your needs for fly-fishing. The line weight would depend on where you will be going to fish.

2. Fly fishing rod:

The three key things to consider while choosing the fly fishing rod are its length, its action and the material it is made up of. Fly-fishing rods are usually made from bamboo, fiberglass, baron or graphite. Fiberglass is the cheapest material used for fishing rods, but it is not convenient in terms of diameter and weight. Bamboo or cane rods are usually handcrafted works of art and are very expensive. These require a lot of care compared to synthetic fly fishing rods. Graphite fly-fishing rods are lightweight and durable and enable the angler to perform any action easily. Therefore, these are the most popular fly fishing rods. Baron fishing rods are the most expensive among the synthetic rods.

3. The fly fishing Reel:

There are 3 types of fishing reels: single action, automatic and multiplier. The most basic of the three is the single action fly reel, which should be selected for a first fly-fishing outfit. Multiplier and automatic fishing reel are not practical for a beginner.

4. Fly leader :

The fly leader is a tiny portion of monofilament line used to fasten the end of the fly line to the fly. The power generated at the time of the cast must be transferred from the end of the fly line to the fly, therefore the correct leader must be chosen. Factors playing a role in the selection of a fly leader are whether the fly leader should be straight or tapered, whether it should be knotless or knotted. The tippet size and the weight of the lead should also be considered.

5. Fishing Fly:

Choosing the fly for your fly fishing outfit depends on factors like the kind of fish you will be targeting and where you will be fishing. It is also a matter of personal preference.

The 5 items of your balanced fly fishing out fit are now chosen. What are you waiting for? Go out there and cast your line to catch those fish and enjoy your adventure!

Once upon a time, fly fishing was viewed as a manly sport. This could be due in the part to the old elitist status of this sport. The nostalgia too, tends to be in favor of the masculine involvement about fly fishing. Today, fly fishing is appropriately recognized to be a great fishing sport option for both men and women. Essentially, estimates say that there are almost over a million women today, who participate in fly fishing. A few estimates say that women account for about 15-20% of the modern fly fishers.

More interestingly, the initial book about fly fishing, which was ever published, was written by Dame Juliana Berners. She published the book "A Treatyse of Fysshynge wyth an Angle" in the 1496. She is reported being a noblewoman and a nun. Berners certainly would have tied and also fished her artificial flies. Currently, there are such equally influential women who have involved in the environs of fly fishing.

There is a huge and growing market which caters to fly fishing dedicated to women. Few outfitters are dedicated about teaching women how to fly fish. Some outfitters have reported that women, who participate in classes of fly fishing, routinely outnumber the men. Many fishing clubs for ladies are becoming very popular, especially around common fly fishing areas.

Extreme physical strength is essentially not required in case of fish flying. Fly fishing is often more about the speed, style and finesse. Women usually do very well when they fly fish.

The catch-and-release ethos which is common in fly fishing might also appeal to most women. Conventional fishing often closely matches hunting trips with an objective about bringing home food. However, sport fishing activities including fly fishing usually are more about thrill of catch. Great memories and Photos are usually the only things brought home from the trips of fly fishing. The fishes often stay perfectly wherever they are. Most fly fishers also use barbless hooks today to implement the catch-and-release fly fishing easily.

Fly fishing would provide great opportunities for getting out in nature not having to harm and kill anything at all. There are of course women, who fish for supper but most people today, both women and men, enjoy fly fishing due to the opportunity it has provided for getting in touch with the nature. The hobby of fly fishing is quite a relaxing sport; however, it also assists in providing good exercise all at one time. Rhythms of the cast seem to soothe many of them. Such fly fishing also provides the opportunity to see varieties of birdlife and wildlife in the natural environment. Furthermore, the scenic backdrops in most fly fishing areas are again simply wonderful to admire.

Fly fishing groups and clubs provide camaraderie and social networking opportunities. Women and men both enjoy such benefits. Along with the start of the women-only fishing groups and clubs quite many women have found a home with the fly fishing activity.

Manufacturers have also recognized the significant increase about the participation by women. Ladies now buy waders which are essentially designed for them, rather than relying upon the men's' sizes they earlier looked out for. Fly fishing rods too, are being designed keeping women's fly fishing in mind. Women's fly rods are made to be considerably lighter and have much smaller handles. Such improvements are great pieces of news for every woman who enjoys the sport of fly fishing.

Fly fishing is indeed a great sport no matter who you are; man or a woman, adults or children. Everyone could enjoy a day or two out, fly fishing.

Fly Rod

How much is a vintage phillipson fly rod worth?

I have acquired, from my great-uncle, an 8'6" Phillipson Deluxe fly rod. It is fiberglass. I haven't found much info at all on this model. But it's to my understanding that it is among the first fiberglass fly rods created. I think this rod is from the 1950s It came right after the bamboo era. I always see other various phillipson fly rods listed on ebay selling for hundreds. Is anyone familiar with these Phillipson fly rods? I know they are very reputable.

Karl White writes the monthly column in Bassmaster magazine called What's It Worth. He handles all kinds of pricing questions for all kind of fishing tackle. I love reading his column every month and he seems to know his stuff. He does field a lot of fly fishing rods and tackle inquiries as well. At the bottom of the page he gives a phone number 405-277-3636 and website www.karlwhite.com. He should be able to help with your item. I'm surprised Just Asking is not all over this one he is the resident fly fishing expert on here.

Fly Fishing Rods

There are several types of fishing rods to choose from but for fly fishing specifically, the rods are longer, thinner and more flexible. One reason why fly rods are meant to weigh light is because rods made like this are the only ones that can cast even the lightest fly. So, you have to realize that the overall characteristic of a fly rod should be lightweight. Also for casting, the line used works together with the weight of the rod, the weight of the line acts as a helper to how the rod is able to cast the fly.

Next, the material of a fly rod varies too. Most of the rods today are made of composite materials such as carbon and graphite, carbon and boron or fiberglass materials; a more innovative version compared to the original bamboo split material. As for the sizes, you have choices between the #0 sizes to the #16 ones. You’ll have to decide first what size of species you want to catch, the type of water condition where you’ll be fishing, the wind and of course the weight of the line before selecting the the type of rod.

The #0 rods are usually used for the smallest species from freshwater, while the #16 rods are for larger ones on saltwater seas. Also, in selecting the type of rod you want to use for fly fishing, familiarize first the parts of it because unlike other types of rod, fly rods don’t have the usual handle extending just right below the reel although there are rods that have very little handle too. The reason for this is to prevent from any casting interference.

These are the primary qualities you may want to take note of before getting yourself the fly rod you want. Don’t forget to make sure, above all else, that you are comfortable with the type of rod you will be using. Don’t get the extremely long rod if you can't even handle it yourself.

Fly Size

what size fly rod do i need for inshore/flats fishing in florida, ie trout snook redfish?

going in feb, some fly tips would help too!

8-9 WT that has an aluminum reelseat.

Make sure to have a decent aluminum reel with a good drag system, (You don't want to get spooled by that 20 LB Red because you've got a "mickey-mouse" reel).

Clousers in white/green, white/gold, white/red, Chartruese, Gold and Crystal are #1,(in my opinion!).They are inexpensive and most everything, (excluding perhaps Permit or Bones), will hit them!

"Critter Flys" like Umpqua's "Andersons McCrab" or "Crazy Charlies" work well for Shallow-water Reds and Trout.

You can also try "Decievers", "Bend Backs", & "Cockroaches", Etc.

Poppers and "Foam Flys" work excellent for Trout.

If your a Fly-tying guy you can EASILY make some Clousers and save yourself a ton of money. After you lose 4-5 Clousers,(which go for about $3-$5 a piece in a Flyshop), to Spanish Macs or Trout you start thinkin' it would be cheaper to BUY a fish dinner than to try and catch one! (lol)

Realize, Reds & Trout aren't as "picky" as freshwater Trout/Salmon. Bendbacks, Decievers, Etc can & WILL work but they aren't cheap and you lose them just as quick as any other fly!

Colors: Variations of Gold, Chartruese, White, Red work well.

Hope this helps ya? Good luck!

Fly Fishing Rods - Ideal Way To Catch Fish

To catch fish one has to use a fly fishing rod which is a part of the angling tackle. A fishing line is attached to a flexible long rod or pole at one end and the other end has a fishing hook attached to it. This fishing hook has the bait on it with which to lure the fish. Fishing rods come in different sizes, the length of the rod depends on how far you want to throw the bait and also on the kind of fish you are planning to catch. The rods vary from 2 to 16 feet in length and the longer rods have a better mechanical Fishing rods differ in length and in action.

What is a fly fishing rod?
Fly fishing rods which are used to throw a fly are very flexible, thin and long. The fly is generally secured on with foam, fur, feathers, or any other lightweight stuff. A fly rod utilizes the load of the fly line for throwing. A “leader” is normally secured to the fly line at one end, and the fly is tied to the other end. To decide on the size of the rod, you would have to consider the kind of fish that you are planning to catch, the weather conditions at the time when you are fishing and what the line weighs. If you are using a large or heavy line, you could go in for flies of a bigger size or weight. The fly rods are accessible in several varying line sizes ranging from O to 16. The smallest size is used for trout and pan fish which are fresh water fish and the larger ones are used for salt water fish.

There are usually no handles or butt sections on fly fishing rods. This prevents obstruction while casting the fly. A spey rod has a lengthier handle on the rear side but is also a fly rod of a different size. The spey rod is used for catching fish in saltwater, or in big rivers to haul salmon or steel head fish.

Rod flexibility or stiffness in the rod
Action is the quantity of flexibility that the rod provides or rigidity of the rod. For smaller fish that weigh less, you would require a slow-action fly fishing rod which would have the maximum amount of flexibility. Though these are very accurate in casting, they are not very easy for beginners to handle. Beginners could use a medium range fly fishing rod which would be much easier to control. The more flexible rods would bend more at the tip and in the middle. These rods are for use in long range or short range casting. For the bigger fish it is better to use fishing rods that are stiff and very stiff and have a fast-action. This again is not easy for a fresher in the fishing game to handle as they are not very accurate. Fly fishing rods can be picked up off the shelf from many marketing agencies, but custom built rods are a popular past time amongst fly fisherman.

There is no doubt that the best fly fishing rod material is good bamboo properly selected, cured, split, glued, and correctly proportioned. It possesses strength combined with lightness, resiliency, pliancy, power and balance in greater degree than either steel or solid woods.

The majority of fly fishing rods that are constructed these days are made from Tonkin. Although back in the day there were a bunch that were made from Calcutta cane, which is harder to come by now in our present time.

Out of all the types of bamboo that are used to make a fly rod, it is said that the male Calcutta cane is the best. If you can not afford the best, then you could get a fly rod that is made from African cane. These kinds of bamboo fly rods are great and you will not go broke trying to buy one.

When a bamboo rod is being put together, the bamboo is split into sections and then it is glued together. The sections of bamboo will be split into either 6 or 8 sections. You will see that the 6 split section is more common than the 8 split section though.

Some makers claim that the eight strip, being more nearly a true cylinder, possesses better action but this seems to be more theoretical than practical, while the tiny tips of an eight strip rod are likely to be soft due to the comparative amount of glue necessary to hold the pieces together.

Eight strip rods are more expensive than the six strip fly fishing rods, and if the angler wants a round bamboo fly fishing rod they are preferable to the six strip planed down as planning certainly must injure a rod. As a general rule a well-made six strip rod leaves little to be desired.

A novelty in bamboo fly fishing rod making is what is known as the double built rods which are made of two layers of split and glued bamboo, one within the other. They are heavier and strong, and it is claimed, hold their shape better, than ordinary fly fishing rods.

Another type of bamboo rod is one that has steel as a center layer, and the outer layer would be made out of bamboo. These are thought to be the best constructed bamboo rods as it gives them excellent casting ability, which is a necessity when it comes to fly fishing.

Bamboo Fly Rod
My uncle recently left me some antique bamboo fly fishing rods of various weights?

They are in poor condition and need to be refurbished.I have tried to find a instruction manual or some kind of book on how to, but have been unsuccessful. Anyone know of a book on this subject or any info ?

With respect to Melomego, not all old bamboo rods are worth money. Certain brand names are, (Gillum, Dickerson, Garrison)
are worth big bucks, others (Phillipson, Granger, Heddon, Orvis)
are worth some. Names such as Montague, Horrocks-Ibbotson,
Shakespeare, South Bend are not worth as much because they were so mass produced (think Ugly-Stik) - there are exceptions. As a rule, post WWII Japanese made rods are nothing more than "tomato stakes", unless they carry sentimental value, since they were cheaply made and not from "Tonkin" cane. As with any antique, condition means everything. The most sought after rods are the "short" fly rods, 8', 7'6", and 7' since these were not as common as the longer rods.

Antique & Collectible Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide by D.B. Homel will help you in evaluating the rods worth.

Bamboo Rod Restoration Handbook by Michael Sinclair will help you in refurbishing the rods.

If you do not wish to undertake the restoration process, you can do a net search for "bamboo rod restoration" - but remember that if you send your rods out, it will take time to get them back, and
you will be looking at a cost of anywhere from $50-$100 per section. It would be advisable to talk to the craftsman prior to sending out your rods for work.

Another thing to remember is that if you want the rods restored for fishing purposes the cost should be cheaper because the craftsman will not have to seek out original ferrules if needed or original color thread for the wraps, he can use quality parts he has "on hand".

Bamboo Fly Rod article

Fly fishing is an activity that allows you to enjoy nature in all of its beauty and be able to breathe in fresh air at the same time. It is no wonder that fly fishing is a sport that can help provide a lot of excitement and also keep you calm while you are on the water.

Understanding fly fishing basics is important and you will come to realize the total absence of any need for speed since you will never be at a rush to do anything though there is no guarantee that you will catch any fish either. You can also learn from fly fishing basics the kind of fly fishing rod that will suit you the best. Experts agree that rods must be light as well as shorter than normal fishing rods used in other forms of fishing.

Rods

In fact, the fly fishing rods should be about nine feet in length on an average and the weight should not exceed five ounces. Once you delve in deeper into fly fishing basics, you will come to realize that the length of your fly fishing rod would also depend on how big or small the stream is where you will be fly fishing.

Lines

Another piece of information that you can gather from studying fly fishing basics is that fly fishing lines are normally heavy and will weigh more than what is usual with other forms of fishing. Such lines should be made so that they can either float on the surface, or sink to the bottom depending on your needs. Also, when choosing the fly lure, you need to pick one that suits the type of fishing you are intent on and also on the fish species you wish to catch.

Lures

If you are fly fishing for fish that seek out their food amongst floating objects on the surface of the water, then you will need to choose lures that can mimic insects that float on the surface of the water. Other fish look for food differently and thus your lure would need to mimic different objects at different times. Fly fishing lures can be categorized differently and there are dry flies as well as emergers, wet flies, saltwater flies as well as bass and panfish flies and more from which to choose.

Time

Another aspect to learning fly fishing basics is in knowing the best time to go fly fishing which includes accounting for the time of day, the water temperature, the amount of sunlight and the water stream's speed. All these factors will help you determine the type of lure to use.

The bottom line with learning fly fishing basics is that there is a lot of preparation required at the outset and the more knowledge you have the better will be your fly fishing experience.
