Salmon Fly
What Rod Would One Need To Catch A Salmon?

What type of fishing rod is needed to catch a salmon? Is it a fly fishing rod or what? Or does it matter?

JD

First off with a' fly rod one REALLY has ta' know what their doin' when it comes ta' fishin' Salmon (HAaaaaa', I still don't and have been fishin' them for quite a BIT of time now!!). My personal setup's be Baitecaster/"level wind" reel's on 8' 6" drift rod's. Again, with these type also, one has to have a good workin' idea of them ie., castin'. Best bet for you is a spinning rod/reel (link) ;) ... < * ( {{ > <

Link is just a spinnin' setup the I picked at random on the Internet but, it'll give you an idea of what to look for ie., length/action of rod, lb., test line accommodations for both rod and reel, etc...

Added: Yeah', I guess I do have a habit of makin' all them goofy markins', as townsend pointed out;) ;) ;) ...lol

Fly Rod

How much is a vintage phillipson fly rod worth?

I have acquired, from my great-uncle, an 8'6" Phillipson Deluxe fly rod. It is fiberglass. I haven't found much info at all on this model. But it's to my understanding that it is among the first fiberglass fly rods created. I think this rod is from the 1950s It came right after the bamboo era. I always see other various phillipson fly rods listed on ebay selling for hundreds. Is anyone familiar with these Phillipson fly rods? I know they are very reputable.

Karl White writes the monthly column in Bassmaster magazine called What's It Worth. He handles all kinds of pricing questions for all kind of fishing tackle. I love reading his column every month and he seems to know his stuff. He does field a lot of fly fishing rods and tackle inquiries as well. At the bottom of the page he gives a phone number 405-277-3636 and website www.karlwhite.com. He should be able to help with your item. I'm surprised Just Asking is not all over this one he is the resident fly fishing expert on here.

Fly Fishing Rods

There are several types of fishing rods to choose from but for fly fishing specifically, the rods are longer, thinner and more flexible. One reason why fly rods are meant to weigh light is because rods made like this are the only ones that can cast even the lightest fly. So, you have to realize that the overall characteristic of a fly rod should be lightweight. Also for casting, the line used works together with the weight of the rod, the weight of the line acts as a helper to how the rod is able to cast the fly.

Next, the material of a fly rod varies too. Most of the rods today are made of composite materials such as carbon and graphite, carbon and boron or fiberglass materials; a more innovative version compared to the original bamboo split material. As for the sizes, you have choices between the #0 sizes to the #16 ones. You’ll have to decide first what size of species you want to catch, the type of water condition where you’ll be fishing, the wind and of course the weight of the line before selecting the the type of rod.

The #0 rods are usually used for the smallest species from freshwater, while the #16 rods are for larger ones on saltwater seas. Also, in selecting the type of rod you want to use for fly fishing, familiarize first the parts of it because unlike other types of rod, fly rods don’t have the usual handle extending just right below the reel although there are rods that have very little handle too. The reason for this is to prevent from any casting interference.

These are the primary qualities you may want to take note of before getting yourself the fly rod you want. Don’t forget to make sure, above all else, that you are comfortable with the type of rod you will be using. Don’t get the extremely long rod if you can't even handle it yourself.

Fishing trouble?

I need a new fishing vest, but unfortunetly, I can't swim very well. So I was wondering if anyone can find a bulky yet very efficent type 3 life vest with lots of pockets. And only if you can, can you also find one that has that and a collar(or headrest) with a grab strap and even a crotch strap, thanks.

Fly Fishing Gear- Top 10 Essentials For Fly Fishing

With an apparently unending array of gear and gadgets, fly fishing seems to be a varied and interesting sport. Most of the available options could be confusing to anyone who is new to Fly fishing. Anyone with a flair for fishing should know the important accessories about it. The 10 common pieces concerning fly fishing gear include a reel, fly fishing rod, line, files, leader, waders, net, clippers, vest and sunglasses.

Fly fishing rod

This rod is one of the mandatory equipments for fly fishing. These rods are usually different when compared to regular and conventional fishing rods and are designed in unique manner. It would allow casting the fly and fly line. Rods today are often constructed using types of graphite compounds. Many of the rods are still structured from bamboo or fiberglass. The Fly rods are usually categorized based upon weights of line they are structured to be used with.

Reels

The Fly fishing reels essentially, are less significant than the rods. Unlike conventional fishing, along with fly fishing one does not reel in the fish. The Fly fishing methods involve stripping the line with free hand. Quite many fly fishing reels actually are of primitive designs and hence not so very expensive. Anglers commonly "palm" the reel for creating the drag, than relying upon internal drag mechanisms within the reel.

Line

The Fly fishing line has been specially designed for such style of fishing. Fly fishing line is considerably heavy compared to traditional fishing line. It is often tapered and designed for floating. Some lines are designed to sink, though. Some anglers attach backer line in between fly fishing line and reel so as to increase the line available.

Leader

The leader is a monofilament, clear line which attaches to the extreme end of fly fishing line. Additionally, the fly is tied to the leader at the end. This leader is further tapered down into a narrow diameter towards the forward end. Leader matches more with the traditional fishing line.

The Flies

They are available in huge assortments of designs and styles. The dry flies are designed so that they float up in the water, nymphs and wet flies are structured for submerging, and few other flies are made to partially submerge. Flies could also be implied as attractive or imitative. Imitative flies are deliberated to imitate or manifest like a specific insect. On the other hand, attractive flies are structured to attract the fists not looking towards any specific natural food source.

The Waders

Waders are optional when you fish in warm water. But a few anglers go fly fishing in cold water streams to find waders enormously essential. Some popular wader styles currently include waders with waterproof lining and neoprene waders. Neoprene waders work very well in the cold water stream and serve in keeping the angler warm. The waders having a waterproof lining prove to be convenient and breathable when one goes hiking flanking a stream.

Net

A net is essential equipment for fly fishing. As fly fishing is often done standing in the waters, it could be not very easy to hunt a fish without good nets. Nets always have a hook attached. This would help the net so that it could be hooked on the anglers' vest or waders. A net is particularly important in cases when the angler is trying to catch and release fishing.

Fishing Vest

As fly fishing is always tried in the water, a fishing vest seems to be a near-essential equipment piece. Vests would allow you in keeping essential gear and tools handy and neat as and when you find its necessity.

Clippers

Clippers are quite useful for clipping the line when you change the flies. You would rarely notice any fly fisherman with no clippers in their pocket or vest.

Sunglasses

Sunglasses are pieces of personal gear which you would never want to forget. They would keep the sun to not reach your eyes and also protect them from stray fishing hooks. Polarized and good quality sunglasses would also assist in a better vision while you are out near the stream. Most anglers would also append a sunscreen and a hat to the catalog of personal gear which is essential.

There are other pieces of gadgets and gear which are available for every fly fisherman. The above mentioned ten items are perhaps among the most essential ones required for a successful and fun outing.

Fly Size

what size fly rod do i need for inshore/flats fishing in florida, ie trout snook redfish?

going in feb, some fly tips would help too!

8-9 WT that has an aluminum reelseat.

Make sure to have a decent aluminum reel with a good drag system, (You don't want to get spooled by that 20 LB Red because you've got a "mickey-mouse" reel).

Clousers in white/green, white/gold, white/red, Chartruese, Gold and Crystal are #1,(in my opinion!).They are inexpensive and most everything, (excluding perhaps Permit or Bones), will hit them!

"Critter Flys" like Umpqua's "Andersons McCrab" or "Crazy Charlies" work well for Shallow-water Reds and Trout.

You can also try "Decievers", "Bend Backs", & "Cockroaches", Etc.

Poppers and "Foam Flys" work excellent for Trout.

If your a Fly-tying guy you can EASILY make some Clousers and save yourself a ton of money. After you lose 4-5 Clousers,(which go for about $3-$5 a piece in a Flyshop), to Spanish Macs or Trout you start thinkin' it would be cheaper to BUY a fish dinner than to try and catch one! (lol)

Realize, Reds & Trout aren't as "picky" as freshwater Trout/Salmon. Bendbacks, Decievers, Etc can & WILL work but they aren't cheap and you lose them just as quick as any other fly!

Colors: Variations of Gold, Chartruese, White, Red work well.

Hope this helps ya? Good luck!

Fly Fishing Rods - Ideal Way To Catch Fish

To catch fish one has to use a fly fishing rod which is a part of the angling tackle. A fishing line is attached to a flexible long rod or pole at one end and the other end has a fishing hook attached to it. This fishing hook has the bait on it with which to lure the fish. Fishing rods come in different sizes, the length of the rod depends on how far you want to throw the bait and also on the kind of fish you are planning to catch. The rods vary from 2 to 16 feet in length and the longer rods have a better mechanical Fishing rods differ in length and in action.

What is a fly fishing rod?
Fly fishing rods which are used to throw a fly are very flexible, thin and long. The fly is generally secured on with foam, fur, feathers, or any other lightweight stuff. A fly rod utilizes the load of the fly line for throwing. A “leader” is normally secured to the fly line at one end, and the fly is tied to the other end. To decide on the size of the rod, you would have to consider the kind of fish that you are planning to catch, the weather conditions at the time when you are fishing and what the line weighs. If you are using a large or heavy line, you could go in for flies of a bigger size or weight. The fly rods are accessible in several varying line sizes ranging from O to 16. The smallest size is used for trout and pan fish which are fresh water fish and the larger ones are used for salt water fish.

There are usually no handles or butt sections on fly fishing rods. This prevents obstruction while casting the fly. A spey rod has a lengthier handle on the rear side but is also a fly rod of a different size. The spey rod is used for catching fish in saltwater, or in big rivers to haul salmon or steel head fish.

Rod flexibility or stiffness in the rod
Action is the quantity of flexibility that the rod provides or rigidity of the rod. For smaller fish that weigh less, you would require a slow-action fly fishing rod which would have the maximum amount of flexibility. Though these are very accurate in casting, they are not very easy for beginners to handle. Beginners could use a medium range fly fishing rod which would be much easier to control. The more flexible rods would bend more at the tip and in the middle. These rods are for use in long range or short range casting. For the bigger fish it is better to use fishing rods that are stiff and very stiff and have a fast-action. This again is not easy for a fresher in the fishing game to handle as they are not very accurate. Fly fishing rods can be picked up off the shelf from many marketing agencies, but custom built rods are a popular past time amongst fly fisherman.

There is no doubt that the best fly fishing rod material is good bamboo properly selected, cured, split, glued, and correctly proportioned. It possesses strength combined with lightness, resiliency, pliancy, power and balance in greater degree than either steel or solid woods.

The majority of fly fishing rods that are constructed these days are made from Tonkin. Although back in the day there were a bunch that were made from Calcutta cane, which is harder to come by now in our present time.

Out of all the types of bamboo that are used to make a fly rod, it is said that the male Calcutta cane is the best. If you can not afford the best, then you could get a fly rod that is made from African cane. These kinds of bamboo fly rods are great and you will not go broke trying to buy one.

When a bamboo rod is being put together, the bamboo is split into sections and then it is glued together. The sections of bamboo will be split into either 6 or 8 sections. You will see that the 6 split section is more common than the 8 split section though.

Some makers claim that the eight strip, being more nearly a true cylinder, possesses better action but this seems to be more theoretical than practical, while the tiny tips of an eight strip rod are likely to be soft due to the comparative amount of glue necessary to hold the pieces together.

Eight strip rods are more expensive than the six strip fly fishing rods, and if the angler wants a round bamboo fly fishing rod they are preferable to the six strip planed down as planning certainly must injure a rod. As a general rule a well-made six strip rod leaves little to be desired.

A novelty in bamboo fly fishing rod making is what is known as the double built rods which are made of two layers of split and glued bamboo, one within the other. They are heavier and strong, and it is claimed, hold their shape better, than ordinary fly fishing rods.

Another type of bamboo rod is one that has steel as a center layer, and the outer layer would be made out of bamboo. These are thought to be the best constructed bamboo rods as it gives them excellent casting ability, which is a necessity when it comes to fly fishing.

When it comes to fly fishing tackle, there are many things that could be considered a part of that group. I will be going over a few of the things that you should have when you are out fly fishing, more than just the fly fishing rod and reel.

I will start off with the bait, which consists of flies. Flies are designed to copy live insects and there are a large variety of kinds that can use as different fish prefer different food. The types of flies that are out there are dry, nymph, popping, wet and stream flies.

Next important thing is the type of fishing line you will be using. In fly fishing the weight of the line is very important, as it is used to cast the fly out, unlike regualr saltwater and freshwater fishing with conventional rods. You will have to make sure that the line will fit the reel and work with it properly.

When you are fly fishing, more than likely you will be standing in the water, which is also known as wading. For this you will need a pair of waders to put on. There are many styles of waders that are out there and you will have to pick a pair that will meet your criteria of fly fishing.

You will also need a fishing vest with lots of pockets that will hold your flies, line, and other pieces of gear. The pockets should fasten with Velcro so that you have easy access to what you need. You dont want to be on the water and realize you need a different fly only to miss out on a passing school of fish because you were fumbling with your pockets.

Having a pair of good fishing pliers is also a good idea to have on hand. You can keep them in your vest or your waders. The pliers make the process of removing the hook from the fished mouth a much easier task, and also increasing the fishes chance of survival.

Another thing that you can have as a part of your fly fishing gear, but not absolutely necessary, is a water proof camera. Nothing will help you remember those fly fishing trips like a picture, especially if you land a big one!

When you are amassing your fly fishing gear, things can eventually get out of hand. Many fly fishermen have an abundance of gear with the possibility that they might need something specific in a certain situation. Thats just fine, but the essentials that are listed above are a start!

Bamboo Fly Rod
My uncle recently left me some antique bamboo fly fishing rods of various weights?

They are in poor condition and need to be refurbished.I have tried to find a instruction manual or some kind of book on how to, but have been unsuccessful. Anyone know of a book on this subject or any info ?

With respect to Melomego, not all old bamboo rods are worth money. Certain brand names are, (Gillum, Dickerson, Garrison)
are worth big bucks, others (Phillipson, Granger, Heddon, Orvis)
are worth some. Names such as Montague, Horrocks-Ibbotson,
Shakespeare, South Bend are not worth as much because they were so mass produced (think Ugly-Stik) - there are exceptions. As a rule, post WWII Japanese made rods are nothing more than "tomato stakes", unless they carry sentimental value, since they were cheaply made and not from "Tonkin" cane. As with any antique, condition means everything. The most sought after rods are the "short" fly rods, 8', 7'6", and 7' since these were not as common as the longer rods.

Antique & Collectible Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide by D.B. Homel will help you in evaluating the rods worth.

Bamboo Rod Restoration Handbook by Michael Sinclair will help you in refurbishing the rods.

If you do not wish to undertake the restoration process, you can do a net search for "bamboo rod restoration" - but remember that if you send your rods out, it will take time to get them back, and
you will be looking at a cost of anywhere from $50-$100 per section. It would be advisable to talk to the craftsman prior to sending out your rods for work.

Another thing to remember is that if you want the rods restored for fishing purposes the cost should be cheaper because the craftsman will not have to seek out original ferrules if needed or original color thread for the wraps, he can use quality parts he has "on hand".

Making a Bamboo Fly Fishing Rod pt1

Bamboo Fly

Before you buy your very first fly fishing reel, it is important that you understand very well about the basics of these very simple fishing reels.

Having your first fly fishing reel might be a surprise for you especially if you are used to bait fish for years. Fly fishing reels are very simple. Below are some basic information you need to know before finally buying your first fly fishing reel for your fishing expedition.

Fly Fishing Reel Basics

Holes- You can notice that reels have holes on its side. The hole serves as a drainage of the water from the line.

Adjustable Drag- This is very important especially if you have plans of catching very large and strong freshwater or saltwater fish. If you are planning to go out for a big game fishing, understand that you will be fighting to reel in the fish, just like you do with bait fishing.

Single Action- This is perfect as your first fly fishing reel. This single action fishing reel means that in a single turn of the handle, it simultaneously turns the spool, keeping it back in place.

Saltwater Reels- These types of fly fishing reels are specifically designed for use in saltwater. These reels have larger diameters, larger lines, and higher backing capacity to withstand longer runs of strong fish. Since corrosion is a main problem in saltwater fishing, make sure you go for reels that use stainless steel, aerospace aluminum, brass, or even electroplated stainless steel.

Replaceable Spools- If you are passionate about doing varied types of fishing, see to it that you look for reels with easy replaceable spools. This will allow you to use either the floating line or the sinking line all in the same reel.

Weight- Your line's weight should match with the designs of your fly reel. Meaning to say, if your fly reel is designed for a four-weight-line, be sure to have the four-weight line and vice versa, the same way when you have a four-weight reel, then you have to have a four-weight-rod. However, both the three and five-weight efficiently work wells with a four-weight reel.

First Fly Fishing Reel: Casting a Rod

When casting a fly fishing rod, it is a bit different than casting with any other rod. You need not touch the fishing reel while you are casting the rod. The reel itself will hold the line, thus making it not a part of the casting process any longer. Instead, you pull out the line manually from the reel and allow it to lie loose towards your feet, making sure to feed it out with your free hands when you need it.

The above information are some of the basic things you need to know before you buy your first fly fishing reel. If you still have questions, do not hesitate to ask fishing suppliers to tell you about fly reels. They can help you choose the best reels possible for you fishing activities.

For those not indoctrinated in the ways of fishing, chances are that you will not know the difference between fly fishing or which end of a rod and reel to use. Fly fishing is an art onto itself and can be quite different from a regular rod and reel casting method you use for fishing in a lake, bay or off-shore.

Defining the Sport

Fly fishing is a time-honored angling technique in which you use fake flies and other artificial “bait” that resembles the natural food that fish consume. These flies are often made from natural materials like feathers and fur as well as artificial materials like plastic which can then be tied to simulate fish's favorite foods like insects, larvae or minnows.

The fishing rods used in the sport are usually light in weight but the fishing line will be heavy so that it will have the weight and force needed for casting it out. The rods could be made out of natural materials like bamboo as it is light, yet durable and strong or equally light synthetic materials like fiberglass or a carbon graphite combination.

There is a reel spool, a bit different construction from a casting reel that is attached to the fly fishing rod to hold the fishing line. Most fly reels are operated manually rather than having automated parts. The line often used in this particular type of fishing is made using a monofilament core encased in a plastic sheath, typically PVC for strength and durability and come in a variety of diameters.
