Choosing fly fishing rods

Fly fishing is a traditional method of fishing that was popularly applied for fishing trout and salmon. Today though, it is employed in fishing for almost any variety of fish. Fly fishing is gaining popularity and people employ this method for almost any kind of fish. Fly fishing is used in both fresh water and seas as well. The techniques used in fly fishing of course vary depending on the location. For example, seas, lakes and rivers have differing conditions and hence the techniques used will vary as well. There is a lot of fly fishing equipment on sale and one gets a lot of choice in the type of equipment. Depending on your budget and needs, you can choose the necessary equipment for your fly fishing trip.

When shopping for fly fishing rods, there are several parameters that one has to keep on mind and work on to choose the rod that suits them best. The primary parameter would be the material out of which the fly fishing rods are made. The two most commonly used materials are Fibreglass and graphite. Fibreglass is the more sturdy material, It is some what flexible and is the best all purpose multi-weather fly fishing rods. Beginners would be well advised to go for fibreglass fly fishing rods. Graphite fly fishing rods are much more expensive. They are also quite light weighted and hence are preferred by advanced fly fishers who want a more accurate cast.

The action of fly fishing rods is another important criterion. The action is determined by the flexibility of the rod with varying levels of flexibility having their own advantages. Expert fly fishers would prefer slow action fly fishing rods when they are in the hunt for small light fish. These fly fishing equipment, are quite light and offer a lot of bend through the length of the rod which is useful when one needs higher accuracy. The extreme levels of bend though make it a little hard for beginners to handle. Medium action fly fishing rods are most popular especially among the newbies. These rods bend only towards the later half at the free end and are perfect for both long and short distance casts. Expert fishers who want a good fight with the big fishes will go for the fast action fly fishing equipment. These rods offer very little bend which is available only at the tip of the rod and hence are great when you need to cast through quite a distance and reel in quite big fish too. Beginners will not be able to handle these types of rods with ease due to the decrease in accuracy.

The final major parameter that ones looks at when buying fly fishing rods is the length of the rods themselves. A new fly fisher should be looking for a rod that is comfortable enough to control yet provide sufficient casting distance. Choose between short, medium or long rods depending on the action required with small rods having lesser action and longer rods being perfect for open sea long distance casting.

Fly Fishing Waders

Never Buy a Fly Fishing Rod Without a Warrantee. Buying Right the First Time Pays in the Long Run

“A quality fly rod can set you back a pretty penny.” A true statement that many fly fishers already know. Another statement many would also agree with is “A rod with a lifetime warrantee costs a lot.” And, that, my friends, would be wrong. As a matter of fact, except in only a few circumstances, unwarranted rods actually cost more than warranted ones.

A point in demonstration: During last year’s annual trip to fish Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley, I broke my “affordable” four-piece 5wt rod. I contacted the company and found it had no warrantee. Ah…what to do…well, since the break occurred at the male part of ferrule, as so often happens, I repaired it, only to have it break again on the first fish of this year’s Platte River trip. I went straight to the local fly shop (It’s on the river, I just clumped right in, dripping waders and all, with reel in hand chirping about needing a new stick.) and found a truly affordable rod that, while it cost more than the broken one, has a lifetime warrantee. Lucky for me I was close to a shop.

So, the new, more expensive rod, will end up being cheaper over its lifetime because if it breaks, it gets replaced at little or no cost to me. Obvious now, but not when I bought the now re-broken “affordable” one.

A quick survey shows that the price difference between warranted and unwarranted rods is often no more than $100. That’s it—a hundred bucks. Some are even in the same price range, and one manufacturer (that of the unwarranted rod I had to replace) even offers less of a warrantee on a rod that’s more expensive than a model with a lifetime warrantee. I know, confusing, isn’t it? Let me state it again: One of their cheaper models has a better warrantee than one of their more expensive ones. Go figure.

What do I make of a manufacturer that won’t warrant a rod when others will? Well, my first impression is that the maker doesn’t have confidence in its product. If it did, it would warrant the rod, right? My second, inescapable impression is that the maker cares less about customer service than it should. In any event, neither case is acceptable, and a buyer should seek out a maker who covers both bases.

Now, if you are in the market for a rod, say you’re a beginner or have limited funds, you cannot afford to buy an unwarranted rod. Break it once (there are two types of people—those who have broken rods, and those will) and you will end up spending more. If you don’t have the money for a warranted rod—wait until you do. Again, the price difference is relatively small. If you can’t afford the additional hundred bucks, you may want to reconsider fly fishing for the time being, because it can be an expensive sport. “Can be,” doesn’t mean it “has to be,” and buying a warranted rod is the first step to controlling costs and keeping fly fishing affordable. Sort of.

Fly Fishing Flies

Fly Fishing Kayaks

Fly fishing is a unique activity to be practiced while in a kayak and is not favoured by many kayakers. Fly fishing from a kayak is not very easy and requires great control and experience. However, once paddlers can master this art, fly fishing from a kayak can be a very exciting and equally fun filled activity.

Fly Fishing Using a Kayak

Usually the amateur kayakers do not indulge in fly fishing from a kayak because they do not have the skill to balance the kayak while fishing. Kayaks are mainly used for fly fishing only on such lakes and ponds where no other watercraft can be used. Kayaks are very comfortable, fast, can save a lot of energy and allow exploring remote fishing areas.

Yet another advantage of fly fishing from a kayak is it does not make any noise. In the absence of any noisy propeller or flippers, paddlers can silently approach the fish and get a good catch. The greatest advantage of a kayak for fly fishing is that paddlers can reach those areas where no other fisherman can venture.

Kayaks for Fly Fishing

Often, many fly fishing enthusiasts keen on using a kayak are perplexed about the most efficient type of kayak for fly fishing. The most preferred kayak for fly fishing is a flatwater kayak that is as short as possible. A kayak about 9 feet in length is a great kayak that can provide a great kayaking as well as a fly fishing experience.

A smaller kayak is easier to control and balance while fly fishing. Kayakers must bear in mind that smaller flatwater kayaks have limited tracking capabilities and do not go very fast as well. However, they are perfect for those who do not plan to venture very far (beyond 3 miles). These kayaks are easy to maneuver as compared to larger flatwater kayaks, which is a key factor in fly fishing.

Fly fishing kayaks must be great at maneuverability at a reasonable speed so that kayakers can explore the most secluded weeds, shallow waterways, bulrushes and tules.

The fishing fraternity is divided over the topic of using a sit-in or sit on top kayaks for fly fishing. Traditionally, paddlers interested in fly fishing used the usual sit-in kayaks only. However, off late many use the new sit on top kayaks as they provide greater stability and are closer to the water surface. Many paddlers also like to use special angler kayaks that are equipped with fishing accessories for fly fishing.

Few Tips for Fly Fishing From Kayaks

Fly fishing from a kayak is not an easy task and there are several tips that can help paddlers in this venture:

1. Paddlers keen on fly fishing on flatwater must not venture out in their kayaks if the wind conditions are too strong. During strong gusts of wind, the kayak would move very fast and it would be very difficult to continue fishing.

2. Paddlers must always maintain a position wherein they cast straight ahead of the kayak while fly fishing.

3. It is always a great addition if paddlers can manage a few strokes while holding the fly fishing rod.

4. It is recommended that beginners complete at least a basic course in kayaking before venturing into fly fishing from a kayak.

5. It is important that kayakers are oriented with the location to have a great fishing session.

These are some of the basic features of fly fishing from a kayak. It is very important that kayakers bear these points in mind before venturing into fly fishing.

How to Tie a Fly for Fly Fishing : Materials Used to Tie Flies: Basic Fly Tying Instructions

Fly Fishing Flies article

Based on this myth there is no such thing as a one size fit all fly fishing rod. Often, advertisers claim that their products are one-size-fits-all - even purveyors of fly fishing rods. This is not the case as most fly fishermen know.

While there are a multitude of fly fishing rods available, no one choice can be considered the "ultimate". When you look for a fishing rod, look for one that is just right for you. Don\'t waste your time looking for a one-size-fits-all kind of rod. Here are a few qualities the right rod should have.

When picking how and where you would like to fish, it is a good idea to know what kind of fish you are looking for prior.

There are many types of fish that can be caught through fly fishing. Fly fishing is perfect for the following species: crappies, sunfish, small mouth bass, black bass, rainbow trout and redfish. The types of fish mentioned above do vary in size and weight, and therefore you will need the right type of fly fishing rods and fly fishing tackle to catch them.

Heavier tackle is required for larger fish, and also, smaller tackle is needed for smaller fish. Once you have decided that you want to try fly fishing, the key is to determine what kind of fish you would like to catch and choose the appropriate fly fishing rod for that type of fish.

Think About The Location You\'d Like To Go Fly Fishing.

You need to have the right information, such as where to use one, before you go out hunting for a fly fishing rod. When you go to the store to buy your fishing tackle, be sure that you already know where you plan to fish. The reason for this is that you will need different equipment for different types of locations. A light rod is needed if you are planning to fish in an area with a small, tranquil river surrounded by a lot of trees, this will allow you to cast at short distances.

Rainbow trout tend to live in small streams and do not weigh much. Light tackle and a short line will work nicely for catching them. However, if your goal is to secure a prize-winning catch while fishing in a large lake, you may want to consider investing in the heavy fly fishing rods.

Fly Fishing Rod

i bourget a fly fishing rod and reel and i want the basics. what else do i need and what does the price vary?

please help because i really like fishing. thanks

Youre question makes very little sense but i will try to help you out, you will need fly line, i like sage, rio and airflo, buy a good line if nothing else becuase its the most important bit, also you will need backing on your reel, dacron is fine.
I use gel-spun backing, very light, strong and you get lots on the spool if you know your fighting hard fish such as stocked rainbows and steelhead etc, but general dacron is fine for every day use,

http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templa...

For the other end of you flyline i recommend a braided loop for quick leader attachement (loop to loop connection)

http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores...

for leaders/tippets go with a quality brand such as rio or airflo g3 this fluorocabon is invisible in water and helps you fish lures such as the woolly bugger, dont use it on dries or it will sink them

http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templa...

gel spun backing

Other items you might want to consider to help you out are gink floatant(keeps your dry flies floating)

Other sites to help you out on the general flyfishing is

(dont let the name put you off it is fly fishing)

knots

Flies that will cover almost all fishing situations and are the most used are PTN, Woolly bugger, Montana nymph (green) dires such as the adams also work see more about flies online here

Also compliments to fishsteelhead and all i can say is i hope this helps you out.
The last thing if youre having trouble with casting you need a weight forward line not DT, also to improve youre turnover use a tapered leader without the braided loop, then attach your tippet to that.

Fly Fishing Materials

in fly fishing, is the tippet line made of a special material?

or can you just use a finer version of a monofilament leader line for the tippet?

Since just about every mfg. has a different rating someone developed the "X" system. The difference is the X is rated by the diameter of the line, no matter what lb test it is. Some brands 5x tippet may be rated at 3 lb test, others 4 lb - but the diameter of the line is the same.
If you look at some leader spools, you'll see they have a diameter
measurement for you.

This is done to properly taper leaders so that the cast "turns over"
properly.

Tipet material is mono or florocarbon for the most part.
I don't advise using floro for dry flies because it sinks.
Floro is great for nymphing.

And finally, yes, you can just use a finer version of mono for your tippet.

Parts of a Fly Fishing Rod

First, although fly rods have different shapes and sizes; some are longer, heavier or more colorful than the others, the different parts of a rod doesn’t change at all. The important part of the rod is referred to the rod blank. It is the central shaft of the rod and it’s where everything, where the rest of the rod is attached. Rod blanks is also called the tip and then the heavy section is called the butt. Generally, blanks are made of graphite but there are still other materials that can be used.

Next is the reel seat. This is located at the butt of the rod. The purpose of this is for the fly reel; the rings found on this part are meant to lock the reel and the foot in place. The material used for reel seats can be either graphite or metal. Then we have the rod handle. This is located just right above the reel seat. This part of the rod also varies in different sizes and shapes. You can find different materials for this one. For more expensive rods, the usual material used on this part is made of rubber. But for the usual cases, (rods that are less expensive) cork is the more common material.

And lastly, the rod guides. These are attached to the rod blank. The purpose is to “guide” the fly line through them. As always, this part of the fly fishing rod varies in shapes too. You’ll also notice that the first guide is identical to the ones found on conventional fishing rods. What they are referred to as well is stripping guides. For the rest of the rod, the wire used is thin and it’s usually addressed as snake guides. The last guide found at the tip of the rod is called the tip top.

Fly Fishing is a unique form of fishing that is as artistic in nature as it is technical. Fly fishing has evolved from being a sombre pastime to an extremely passionate sport among anglers. Fly fishing, initially developed for catching trout and salmon, quickly developed into a favorite recreational habit for many around the world looking to take a sabbatical from the rigors of daily life.

Unlike traditional forms of fishing, fly fishing involves the use of an artificial fly as bait. The fly is tied to a hook with the use of fur, thread, feathers and other similar materials. The basic logic behind this is to create an illusion of food that attracts the fish to the hook.

There are two major fly fishing forms, one being the traditional dry fly fishing and the other wet fly fishing. Out of these, dry fly fishing is widely regarded as the classic form in which the angler casts the bait upstream to catch trout or salmon. The sight of a fish jumping upstream in anticipation of bait beats most other fishing experiences hands down and this is just one the many reasons why more and more people are attracted to the charms of fly fishing.

Fly fishing is generally regarded to be one of the toughest forms of the fishing sport and demands a lot of patience and skill from the fly fisherman. As fly-fishing fun requires agility and sharpness, the correct selection of fly fishing rods holds utmost importance. There are many different types of fly fishing rods around the market and one should always pick out an appropriate fly fishing rod after review of certain aspects such as their weight, length, and the place where fly fishing is to be attempted.

One of the best ways for a fly fishing amateur to kick start things is to try out his luck using a bamboo fly fishing rod. Most fly fisherman swear by them due to their lightweight and greater flexibility. Bamboo fly fishing rods were the first fly fishing rods to be created and their immense flexibility makes them an asset to both amateur fly fishers and astute fly fishers who prefer a much more refined style of fly fishing. However on the down side, bamboo fly fishing rods are much more delicate and as making them requires substantial skill, they are pretty heavy on the wallet too.

Great alternatives for bamboo fishing rods are graphite fly fishing rods and fiberglass fly fishing rods. Graphite rods do tend to be a bit on the stiffer side but their additional strength, performance, and durability does indeed give fly fisherman a lot of options to work with. On the other hand, fiberglass fishing rods have grown in stature and number over the past decade or so and are now the most common fly fishing rods around the fly fishing community. Fiberglass rods are strong and also have the added advantage of being flexible and durable. However, they do tend to be a bit on the heavier side and much of their usage is dependent on the strength and the skill of the fisherman wielding them.

The act of fly fishing is best enjoyed in the company of friends and relatives. Fly fishing offers the best way to spend a dull afternoon in the lap of nature with close friends and relatives complete with competition to make the biggest catch. So, go ahead and take a dip into the charm of fly fishing and find a great way to enjoy your much cherished weekends.

Fly fishing rods are not the only type of rod that needs careful selection criteria. For more on all types of fishing rods, be sure to visit http://www.anglingrods.com today.

Once you've decided to get into fly fishing as a hobby or a sport there is a lot of equipment to purchase. You can buy them online or at your local fishing store depending on your convenience and prices. Fly fishing rods are the primary piece of fishing equipment that one has to procure. Following that the next most important piece of fly fishing equipment will be the fly fishing reels and fishing flies as well. When buying fly fishing reels and fishing flies you will have to do some amount of research and choose the product that suits your fishing style the best.

There are several types of fishing reels available. The most common ones of these would be the centre pin fishing reel, bait casting reel, spin reel, spin cast reel and under spin reel. Of these, the centre pin reels is the fly fishing reel that is used most commonly for fly fishing. To buy fly fishing reels one must consider the various factors that will play a major role in your selection. The first thing, is the size of the reel that you choose. The reels come in differing sizes and you have to choose the size that suits you best for your fishing needs. If you are fly fishing for small fish in freshwater lakes, a smaller reel would suffice, but when you are in the open sea, a large spool would be the better option as it would give you more line. There are a few reels which have the option of interchanging spools which means that you can buy several lines of differing sizes and change them when you need them. This makes for a lot of cost savings if you regularly switch between freshwater and the high seas.

Consider the different types of reel functions hat are available. This can primarily be categories as single action reel and multiple reels. The single action fly fishing reels are very simple to use with one rotation of the handle giving one rotation of the reel. They are pretty light weighted and hence pretty easy to handle as well. The multiple reels make rotation easier by way of allowing one turn of the handle to produce more than one turn of the reel. This allows for easier rotation of the reel but then tends to be heavier thanks to having multiple reels. Another thing that you should consider with fly fishing reels is the size of the arbour on the reel. The larger the arbour, the easier it is to retrieve in the line that has been cast.

Fishing flies traditionally were hand made by the fishermen themselves. Today one does not have the time and patience to do so and hence one can easily procure high quality handmade fishing flies at any fishing store. The flies that you buy come in a variety of patterns and you wish have to choose the fishing flies depending on the type of fish you want to catch and the feeding habits of that variety of fish. Some advanced fishers do still prefer to tie their own flies, the patterns for which they have fine tuned through their experience of fly fishing.

3 Great Fly Fishing Tips

Many live bait anglers are excellent as sportsmen, but for the fly fisherman he is doing better for nature by conserving it at the outset.

Fly fishing is one of the sports that is growing in popularity, as well as being part of the growing concern for conserving natural resources, and helps to provide aquatic recreation.

Those who want to learn some good tips for fly fishing, you should look at the following list that should give any angler pointers on harnessing their skills at fly fishing:

1 The Rod Material

For beginners or for moderate use, a rod made of hollow glass is the best advice as it requires less care than one made of bamboo, and will wear better if not stored properly or is mishandled.

2 Line

For perfect fly casting your line needs to match the rod exactly, as any problems usually indicates that it it too light to get the right action out of the rod.

If you look at your rod, it will gave a rating on the right weight line that is needed which is the same if you are catching bluegills and small trout, right up the largest sea fish.

The size line that is needed should be a C level, a GBF three-diameter or an HCH double taper; given that most fly fishing rods are made of hollow glass. These lines work best for most rods, regardless of the length or the weight of the rods for anglers.

3 The Right Casting Technique

When casting, 20 feet of line should be put out in front first. A straight line should be cast out by the angler. So as to get this right jerky movements should be avoided if possible even when it is done at greater speed.

The angler should remain relaxed so as to get the casting right.

Once the fundamental basics have been learned, you can join the hundreds of others who already enjoy fly fishing.

To cast successfully takes practice so spend some time by a stream, and watch other fishermen who are already competent at casting and you'll soon get the hang of it. It is fun trying.

You will learn best by getting some good tips near a stream, so soon you will acquire the skills and learn all you need to know about fly fishing.

Fly Fishing Tips article

It is apparent that fly fishing differs from the regular fishing methods in various ways. Such significant distinctions help in making fly fishing rod to be an obvious fly fishing piece to purchase.

The conventional fishing would use a rod that is equipped with transparent, monofilament and a nearly weightless line for casting a weighted hook within the water. Making use of a weighted and translucent line casting a weightless hook in the water is essentially reversed in Fly fishing. The actions of fly fishing rods are required for being able to cast the fly.

The act of fly fishing is different from conventional fishing in a way that the fly fisherman never puts his rod down. These fishermen cast the whole time they are actually fishing. Such activity makes the decision for buying the perfect rod to very essential. Anglers who fly fish would spend their whole fishing day making casts and having the rod in their hand.

The method of getting in a fish, again, is different in fly fishing. The fishing reel seems to be very important when traditional fishing is concerned. However, it is not quite important for fly fishing. In this type of fishing, the fishermen use a method of stripping the line by hand. Fly fishing reel is commonly used for spare line, like a storage compartment.

The idea about buying the fly fishing rod is indeed a vital decision that would make an impact on the enjoyment you would get from the sport. Most of the modern rods of fly fishing are made from types of graphite compound. However, there are some bamboos rods also designed but are quite expensive when compared to graphite rods. There are, however several alternatives of graphite rods for fly fishing available.

The fly fishing rods are often categorized by weight. A 6-weight rod is also written as 6wt, for instance. Weights of the fly fishing rod you buy would be decided by the place you are intending to fish. Hence, it is significant to use line which goes fine with the weight of the fly fishing rod while you fish. Few rods are developed to be multi-weight fishing rods and could be safely used with various other weights of line.

A general rule while shopping for any fly fishing rod is purchasing an expensive rod that you could afford. The advice is bases itself on the comprehension that the fly fishing rod is one of the most vital fly fishing equipment of the fly fishing outfit. One could always upgrade the reel sometime later if decided for acquiring a better reel.

An all time good idea is to visit several shops which sell fly fishing gear prior to making the final choice. Even if one plans the purchase of their fly fishing rod over the internet shop, it would be quite good to essentially handle several other rods before concluding on the final decision. Ensure to remember that while the fly fishermen tend to be bunch of opinionated people, fly fishing rods often are personal choices. If any rod does not find it comfortable within your hands it hardly matters which expert recommends that rod. The choice would also be greatly influenced by the place you intend fishing. For instance, the smaller mountain streams in New England would require a much lighter rod compared to great rivers in Rocky Mountains of Utah.
