The Best Fly Reel For the Money

Fly reels can get expensive.  Do you need to spend that much to get a high quality reel?  A fly reel is the third most important item to a standard fly fishing set-up, with fly fishing rod and fly line being number one and two.  Let's look at the aspects that you do not want to leave out when trying to save money on a fly fishing reel as well as some that you can get by without, so you can have the best fly rod for the money.

Before you buy a fly fishing reel, it is important to know a few things so that you can be confident you are buying a fly reel that will fit the fly rod you are buying, the fish you are after, and the technique you are to use.  A fly reel must match these aspects before it can even be considered as the best fly rod for the money.

Size of Reel Needed

A fly reel's size is determined by the line weight (wt) you will be using.  For example, dry fly fishing for trout will typically be done with a 4wt or 5wt rod and line.  Therefore you will want to use a 4wt or 5wt reel.  If a fly fisherman were to use a 4wt fly reel just because it is inexpensive, with an 8wt line, he would find out pretty fast that there is not enough space on a 4wt reel to hold 8wt line.  Nor would the drag system be strong enough to effectively control a fish that an 8wt is made for such as a steelhead or salmon.
For a fly fishing set up to feel right the rod and reel must have a good balance.  Having a balanced fly fishing setup will help the rod load better resulting in a much further and smoother cast.  A fly fishing setup with a reel too small or big for the rod not only feels weird but also looks weird.

Size of Fish

It is important to purchase a reel that will be able to handle the fish you are after.  With big fish, the reel becomes more of a necessity than with smaller fish.  For example, a 16 inch trout is going to put on a good fight for a 4wt fly fishing setup, but mostly a fly angler will be able to land the fish by pulling on the line and not rely on the reel at all.  If a fly angler was to be using his 10wt fly rod and reel to hook into a King Salmon, then the reel will get a lot of use as simply pulling the line in will not cut it.  With these bigger fish that are prone to run a long ways, a quality, smooth drag system is essential.  For this reason, it is possible to get all the reel you need cheaply to outfit a 4 or 6wt rod, but as you go up in weight, price should and will follow as the reel is depended on a lot more.

Technique

There are a couple fly fishing techniques that will help determine the best fly reel for the money.  Of course there are the standard setups that are pretty straight forward; just buy a reel that matches the line and rod weight and your set up should be pretty well balanced.  If a fly fisherman was to buy a spey rod (an advanced two handed fly rod made for long casts), then he will want buy a reel that is a couple sizes bigger than the line he is fishing.  This is because spey line is quite a bit longer than traditional fly fishing lines due to the ability to make longer cast.  Spey rods also need bigger reels because the rods or typically long, 13-14 feet, and it takes a little more weight to balance one out.

So, What Is the Best Fly Reel for the Money?

The best fly reel for the money is one that covers all the basics mentioned above, but also fits into your budget.  A good rule of thumb is to buy the best fly fishing reel that you can afford.  The price ranges a lot, but any model made by Sage will more than get the job done at a fair price.  A person can spend as little as , or as much as 0.  All are good reels, but the change in quality definitely makes a difference as you go up in price.  Do not fear though, if this is your first fly reel purchase, Sage's lower end reels will feel as smooth as baby skin if you only have cheap reels to compare it too.

Conclusion

While a fly reel will not see near as much use as the fly rod  or line for lightweight setups, a quality reel is essential when it is needed, especially  when using heavier equipment and fighting bigger fish or big fish on light line.  Click here: OnlineFlyFishingGuide.com to check  out the complete line of Sage Reels, as well as all other equipment that is  needed to be a successful fly fisherman. Fly fishing is a completely different breed of fishing, employing different tactics and different tackle.

Fly fishing tackle is not generally suited for, say, shark fishing and vice versa.

Rods for fly fishing differ from other kinds of rod. They are thinner and more flexible. Probably the most noticeable difference between fly rods and other rods is their lack of a butt section. This deliberate omission, which gives fly fishing rods their distinct look, is designed to prevent interference with the casting movements.

An important element of your fly fishing tackle is the line. Unlike traditional fishing tackle set ups where the weight of the lure pulls the line out, the fly is generally of very little weight so relies on the weight of the line to unfurl to its target. Because of this, fly fishing line is much heavier than its regular fishing counterpart.

Compared to traditional fishing reels, the fly fishing reel (a Centrepin Reel) is a simple piece of tackle. Acting mainly as a storage device for the line, they have few other functions. Earlier examples of fly reels had no drag mechanism, slowing of the fish was done by simply "palming the rim". In recent years, fly fishing reels have evolved somewhat, employing disc drag mechanisms, though they still remain relatively simple devices.

Every successful fly angler has an arsenal of artificial flies to lure his catch. Flies come in hundreds of different varieties. With colourful names such as Nymphs, Zonkers, Buzzers, Wooly buggers and other exotic names, you may be confused.

Flies are made from a wide variety of natural and synthetic materials, such as, to name a few, hair, mylar and rubber. They are designed to have the appearance and behaviour of the prey of the target fish. This could be, as the name suggests, flies or anything else the fish like to feed on, such as worms, insects, vegetation, even mammals and birds! The fly acts in the same way as bait in more traditional forms of fishing. It is attached to a hook, which hooks the fish when it makes a move at the bait.

Flies are generally very affordable, individual flies costing in the region of 50p – £2 (you can buy in bulk and get them even cheaper). There is however a huge number of people who get great joy from making and fishing their own flies.

Another sometimes overlooked element to fly fishing tackle is clothing. We are not blessed with the best weather in the UK so it is important that you are comfortable for your time fishing. If you go out for your first day of fly fishing and find yourself shivering all day, the chances are you won’t want to go again so a warm set of waterproof clothing is of the utmost importance.

You should also invest in a decent set of waders. Because of the limitation on casting distance with no weight on the end of the line, you are often required to wade out a little to be able to reach the target fish.

Many people that are passionate about fly fishing will notice that there are several other ways to enjoy fly fishing without ever getting near the water. Some people enjoy tying their own flies while others like to build their own fly fishing rods. Both offer great alternatives when fly fishing itself may not be a possibility.

One great example of a time when building your own fly fishing rod is particularly satisfying is on a rainy day. If you had intended to get up on a particular day to head to your favorite river to do some fly fishing only to find out that the weather has wrecked your plans you can chose to spend your day building a new fly fishing rod instead.

This allows you to enjoy one of your favorite hobbies even when the weather is not cooperating. It is also a great way to build your fly fishing rod collection. Before you know it your collection will include antique fly fishing rods and your own home made ones too.

Different Ways to Learn How to Build Your Own Fly Fishing Rod

One popular way that fly fishermen learn to build their own fly fishing rods is by taking a class. These classes are typically conducted by skilled craftsmen who are particularly passionate about both rod making and fly fishing.

They will typically have a wealth of knowledge regarding best techniques for building your own fly fishing rod as well as great recommendations for which tools work best to build them. The classroom environment is also a great place to meet other fly fisherman looking to branch out into this new hobby as well.

Another great way to help you learn to build a fly fishing rod is by instructional book. Several books have been published over the years that will give you the general procedure that you will use to build a fly fishing rod.

When looking for a good book to use, make sure that there are plenty of pictures and diagrams that you can work off of. Also it will be a good idea to choose an instructional book that covers all of the different tools that you may need when you build your fly fishing rod.

While it certainly might not be the easiest way to go about it, many people like to tinker and experiment on their own. Take a fly fishing rod that you particularly like and try to construct something similar to it.

Local hardware stores and fishing stores will likely have all of the parts you need to get started. The process of experimenting on your own might yield some pretty impressive results. It might also take you several tries to master a particular technique so make sure you do not give up right away.

To catch fish one has to use a fly fishing rod which is a part of the angling tackle. A fishing line is attached to a flexible long rod or pole at one end and the other end has a fishing hook attached to it. This fishing hook has the bait on it with which to lure the fish. Fishing rods come in different sizes, the length of the rod depends on how far you want to throw the bait and also on the kind of fish you are planning to catch. The rods vary from 2 to 16 feet in length and the longer rods have a better mechanical Fishing rods differ in length and in action.

What is a fly fishing rod?
Fly fishing rods which are used to throw a fly are very flexible, thin and long. The fly is generally secured on with foam, fur, feathers, or any other lightweight stuff. A fly rod utilizes the load of the fly line for throwing. A “leader” is normally secured to the fly line at one end, and the fly is tied to the other end. To decide on the size of the rod, you would have to consider the kind of fish that you are planning to catch, the weather conditions at the time when you are fishing and what the line weighs. If you are using a large or heavy line, you could go in for flies of a bigger size or weight. The fly rods are accessible in several varying line sizes ranging from O to 16. The smallest size is used for trout and pan fish which are fresh water fish and the larger ones are used for salt water fish.

There are usually no handles or butt sections on fly fishing rods. This prevents obstruction while casting the fly. A spey rod has a lengthier handle on the rear side but is also a fly rod of a different size. The spey rod is used for catching fish in saltwater, or in big rivers to haul salmon or steel head fish.

Rod flexibility or stiffness in the rod
Action is the quantity of flexibility that the rod provides or rigidity of the rod. For smaller fish that weigh less, you would require a slow-action fly fishing rod which would have the maximum amount of flexibility. Though these are very accurate in casting, they are not very easy for beginners to handle. Beginners could use a medium range fly fishing rod which would be much easier to control. The more flexible rods would bend more at the tip and in the middle. These rods are for use in long range or short range casting. For the bigger fish it is better to use fishing rods that are stiff and very stiff and have a fast-action. This again is not easy for a fresher in the fishing game to handle as they are not very accurate. Fly fishing rods can be picked up off the shelf from many marketing agencies, but custom built rods are a popular past time amongst fly fisherman.

When you choose a fly fishing rod, you will have to use an industry standard system that specifies weight. Fly fishing rods are not weighed in grams. Instead, a 1 to 14 number system is used. It’s quite easy to determine the optimum weight of your rod by basing it on the size and species of fish that you plan to catch.

A basic guide that will assist you in choosing the proper fly rod is: Lower weight, small fish; higher weight, larger fish. Secondary factors include personal preference and weather conditions. Light fly rods do not cast well if the wind is strong.

Species and Weight Guide

• Weight 1to 3 – pan fish, small trout and other small fish species.

• Weight 4 – small fish species of all kinds.

• Weight 5 to 6 – small bass and medium-sized trout.

• Weight 7 to 8 – large bass, large trout, steelhead and salmon.

• Weight 9 to 14 – muskie, tarpon, large salmon and large saltwater fish species.

Always choose a line and reel that have the identical rod weight that you have chosen.

Beginners should use a 3 to 5 weight rod when fishing streams. If you are fishing for bass, a 5 to 6 weight rod is best. Saltwater species and freshwater salmon require a rod that is 7 to 8 weight.

Length

Common lengths for fly fishing rods are 7, 8 and 9 feet. Use short rods for short casts in areas that are surrounded by brush, trees or shrubs. If fishing in an open area where longer casts are possible, choose a longer fly fishing rod. If you plan to fish in lakes or rivers, choose a rod of 4 to 6 weight that is 8 to 9 feet long and use a medium action rod for the best results.

Saltwater flyfishing is a passion - it's advantage fish, not angler. A fanatical pursuit with zeal fueled by the degree of difficulty required to reach the ultimate goal. It's fast fish and skinny water for some... big fish and blue water for others. Sometimes it's finesse and long leaders, but most of the time it's brute strength and power! Creating fly rods for such a demanding fishery requires a lot of dreaming and a lot of fishing. The final result is the most advanced and uniquely different series of fly rods ever. Messrs. Pallot, Wejebe, Rajeff and Loomis and a cast of hundreds shared their angling and casting expertise to help us create our new CrossCurrent saltwater fly rods. With an apparently unending array of gear and gadgets, fly fishing seems to be a varied and interesting sport. Most of the available options could be confusing to anyone who is new to Fly fishing. Anyone with a flair for fishing should know the important accessories about it. The 10 common pieces concerning fly fishing gear include a reel, fly fishing rod, line, files, leader, waders, net, clippers, vest and sunglasses.

Fly fishing rod

This rod is one of the mandatory equipments for fly fishing. These rods are usually different when compared to regular and conventional fishing rods and are designed in unique manner. It would allow casting the fly and fly line. Rods today are often constructed using types of graphite compounds. Many of the rods are still structured from bamboo or fiberglass. The Fly rods are usually categorized based upon weights of line they are structured to be used with.

Reels

The Fly fishing reels essentially, are less significant than the rods. Unlike conventional fishing, along with fly fishing one does not reel in the fish. The Fly fishing methods involve stripping the line with free hand. Quite many fly fishing reels actually are of primitive designs and hence not so very expensive. Anglers commonly "palm" the reel for creating the drag, than relying upon internal drag mechanisms within the reel.

Line

The Fly fishing line has been specially designed for such style of fishing. Fly fishing line is considerably heavy compared to traditional fishing line. It is often tapered and designed for floating. Some lines are designed to sink, though. Some anglers attach backer line in between fly fishing line and reel so as to increase the line available.

Leader

The leader is a monofilament, clear line which attaches to the extreme end of fly fishing line. Additionally, the fly is tied to the leader at the end. This leader is further tapered down into a narrow diameter towards the forward end. Leader matches more with the traditional fishing line.

The Flies

They are available in huge assortments of designs and styles. The dry flies are designed so that they float up in the water, nymphs and wet flies are structured for submerging, and few other flies are made to partially submerge. Flies could also be implied as attractive or imitative. Imitative flies are deliberated to imitate or manifest like a specific insect. On the other hand, attractive flies are structured to attract the fists not looking towards any specific natural food source.

The Waders

Waders are optional when you fish in warm water. But a few anglers go fly fishing in cold water streams to find waders enormously essential. Some popular wader styles currently include waders with waterproof lining and neoprene waders. Neoprene waders work very well in the cold water stream and serve in keeping the angler warm. The waders having a waterproof lining prove to be convenient and breathable when one goes hiking flanking a stream.

Net

A net is essential equipment for fly fishing. As fly fishing is often done standing in the waters, it could be not very easy to hunt a fish without good nets. Nets always have a hook attached. This would help the net so that it could be hooked on the anglers' vest or waders. A net is particularly important in cases when the angler is trying to catch and release fishing.

Fishing Vest

As fly fishing is always tried in the water, a fishing vest seems to be a near-essential equipment piece. Vests would allow you in keeping essential gear and tools handy and neat as and when you find its necessity.

Clippers

Clippers are quite useful for clipping the line when you change the flies. You would rarely notice any fly fisherman with no clippers in their pocket or vest.

Sunglasses

Sunglasses are pieces of personal gear which you would never want to forget. They would keep the sun to not reach your eyes and also protect them from stray fishing hooks. Polarized and good quality sunglasses would also assist in a better vision while you are out near the stream. Most anglers would also append a sunscreen and a hat to the catalog of personal gear which is essential.

There are other pieces of gadgets and gear which are available for every fly fisherman. The above mentioned ten items are perhaps among the most essential ones required for a successful and fun outing.

Some people refer to fly fishing as an art. It is graceful to watch and quite amazing to see expert anglers dancing the fly on the water. In order to partake in this angling dance you need the proper fly fishing rod-reel combo. Fly fishing rod-reel combos can be purchased as a set or one can pair up their own.

There are several different types of fly-fishing reels; small, medium, and large arbors. The size of the arbor relates to how much line your reel uses per crank of the rod. Qualities to look for in your fly fishing reel are if they are made of a high quality aluminum, designed for precision, have a smooth drag with instant line release, waterproof and corrosion free. You can purchase fly fishing reels now for left or right-handed anglers and some companies offer reels that have been ergonomically designed for the avid angler to avoid undo stress on the anglers' wrist.

There are three basic fly fishing actions used, slow, medium and fast. Slow action rods are great with smaller fish and are extremely bendable. They are great for accuracy but can be difficult to control for a novice angler. The slow action rods are best for short-range casting. For novice anglers, the medium action rod is better. They still have the flexibility needed in the middle and tip of the rod and are great for any range casting.

The fast action fly fishing rods do not offer much bend except in the tip. They are better suited for long-range casting and bigger fish. Rod length is also significant in your choice. Short rods measure less then eight feet, have less action, and are a good choice for smaller creeks or streams. Medium rods range between eight and nine feet and are universal as far as cast lengths and water types. Large fly fishing rods measure over nine feet and are best suited for larger fish and bodies of water.

Fly-fishing rods are made out of fiberglass or graphite. Graphite is the more expensive of the two but due to their lightweight in nature, allow for better accuracy. Fiberglass is universal in use but actually holds up longer then the graphite. The rod material ultimately is more of a personal preference. The anglers grip on the rod is important in relation to the size of game. The Cigar grip works well for smaller fish. Half-Well grips are generally on medium rods and work well for medium sized fish. The Full-Well grips you will find on large rods for large game fish.

Your fly fishing rod and reel combo does not have to be expensive to be effective. In pairing up your own set, make sure your reel balances out your rod; large reel requires a large rod. By matching up your rod, to your reel to the intended target, you cannot go wrong.

Martin Caddis Creek 9' Fly Fishing Combo - CC68 Reel - 7/8 wt.

First, although fly rods have different shapes and sizes; some are longer, heavier or more colorful than the others, the different parts of a rod doesn’t change at all. The important part of the rod is referred to the rod blank. It is the central shaft of the rod and it’s where everything, where the rest of the rod is attached. Rod blanks is also called the tip and then the heavy section is called the butt. Generally, blanks are made of graphite but there are still other materials that can be used.

Next is the reel seat. This is located at the butt of the rod. The purpose of this is for the fly reel; the rings found on this part are meant to lock the reel and the foot in place. The material used for reel seats can be either graphite or metal. Then we have the rod handle. This is located just right above the reel seat. This part of the rod also varies in different sizes and shapes. You can find different materials for this one. For more expensive rods, the usual material used on this part is made of rubber. But for the usual cases, (rods that are less expensive) cork is the more common material.

And lastly, the rod guides. These are attached to the rod blank. The purpose is to “guide” the fly line through them. As always, this part of the fly fishing rod varies in shapes too. You’ll also notice that the first guide is identical to the ones found on conventional fishing rods. What they are referred to as well is stripping guides. For the rest of the rod, the wire used is thin and it’s usually addressed as snake guides. The last guide found at the tip of the rod is called the tip top.

In view of the wide research done in fly fishing the number of fly fishing rod types in the market are quite large and you have a great choice and brand names. The first aspect you have to consider is the weight and duty for which you are purchasing the fishing rod. They are generally available in gradations from 1 to 9 depending on their weight. Lower the numbers lower the weight and so on. The cast line is directly proportional to the fly rod weight and this is an important parameter.

Significant features of a Fly Fishing Rod

The topic of choosing the most appropriate fishing rod that you can use in fly fishing can be quite complicated and you need to logically understand the various features that are to be considered in the course of your choice. It is imperative to have the basic date on what the fishing rod is being used for in terms of the fish species and the waters where you will sport for those kinds of fish. Finally one needs to stipulate the amount worth spending for all this gear in order to satisfy one\'s craving for this sport.

The Fishing Rod

The most important feature of the fishing rod is its flexural characteristics. It is designated as slow to fast and you should try to understand this concept before purchasing a rod. The amateurs who have just started fly fishing need to begin with medium or medium-fast action rods and graduate on to more sophisticated construction as you gain more experience. It invariably depends on the aptitude of the angler and only a general guide line can be given since the feel and strength control of casting vary from person to person.

What is your Fish?

The type of fish is all important to determine the quality of your fishing rod. Remember that the general maxim is to equate the weight of the fish to the weight of the fishing rod. Mostly it is useful to use light to medium heavy fishing gear for many common fish. Always consult an expert or information on the Internet on the data pertaining to fish and fishing rod relationship.

Fishing Location and your Fishing Rod

The fishing rods depend also on the waters that you encounter for the particular species of fish. The dynamics of the ponds, lakes or rivers ascertain the weight of the casting rod and so does the climatic conditions at different times of the year. Mild conditions and medium fish require light to medium heavy fishing rods whilst severe climatic variations or high water current needs heavier varieties.

Cost is always important!

Quality and cost never blend and one must find a good relationship by generalization technique. The common or let us say popular St. Croix Fly Fishing rod is quite suitable for most of the angler\'s needs. If you have more to spend then go in for the more expensive rods that will give you additional features and efficiency. It is your passion for trout that will determine your attraction to a particular fly fishing rod!

Fly fishing is a tricky way of catching fish. Before you visit a store to buy a fly rod, take these things into consideration. These are very important factors in fly fishing, so read carefully. The first thing to keep in mind is the kind of fish you will be catching. In general, the heavier the fish, the heavier the equipment will be needed.

The second factor you need to think about is the body of water you plan to fish. For example, is it going to be a babbling brook, and a roaring river? The motion of the water is not the only thing to pay attention to. You also need to consider the clearness of the water, the wind and the distance you will need to cast to catch your fish.

Finally, you must take into account the action of the fly fishing rods. They are made to flex; and they do it in different ways. They can be slow or fast. It is crucial to get the feel of the rod. If you are a beginner, a rod somewhere in the medium range would be the best option.

Experienced anglers, who have been enjoying fishing for many years, typically have quite a few different fly rods. Each rod is designed to do a particular job. The size of the different rods is represented by a number. The larger the number the larger the rod. It also represents the line to be cast. For instance, a 3-weight rod can cast a 3-weight line.

Always keep in mind that the rod is just a continuation of your arm. It is the line that gets cast not the rod. You also need to take into account the weight of the fly. If the fly is too heavy the line will sag and will not cast as desired.

An additional feature to care about when buying a rod is the flexibility or the action of the rod. If you get a fast action rod, expect that only about 30% of the rod will bend. On the other hand, a slow action rod will bend about 90%. A medium action will bend about 60%. The slow action rod bends much easier than a fast action rod. However, the fast action rod casts farther than a slow action rod.

Today's best fly rods are made of the graphite. The introduction of the graphite enables the production of the faster action rods. These rods are not heavy and use more of the tip to project the fly line. The rod will do all the work for you if the line is cast properly. It is one of the biggest benefits of the fast action rod - the fisherman casting does less work.

In the end. Never buy a rod that you have not cast first.

There is nothing more relaxing and enjoyable than to go fishing. To have a bountiful catch, you need a good boat. Check out these superb inflatable fishing kayak. Also, cold feet forces people to stop fishing. This is sad because it really is not necessary with heated boot insoles. With them, you can fish all day even in very cold waters.

Rods for Fly Fishing Beginners: Choosing the Right Ones

Fly fishing has basic gears, one of them is rods. There are many fly fishing rods, especially in sports shops. These seem to be overwhelming for beginners. There are a few things to consider when buying your first rod.

 Budget

This is a primary concern. There are fishing rods that can range for just below 100 dollars going up. The main consideration is that you find the ones that can last. It would be better to buy more expensive one that can last, than a cheap one that you would need to replace often.

Most seasoned anglers would actually advise you to go to specific brand shops, this is to avoid buying a rod that is of poor quality. This would also ensure that you get to have clerks who know about their products. Most of them can help you decide on the fishing rod for beginners. Such shops also have longer warranties.

 Length

Length of the rods can range from four up to eighteen feet. There are actually many uses for the varying lengths. Often enough, beginners are advised to take a longer rod. Now, longer would entail buying an eight to eight and a half rod. This can also vary for female anglers. Most of the time a seven and a half is recommended. At the same time, the length of the rod can also depend upon your height.

 Action

This is slightly complex. Action is how much bending can a rod take. There are three categories, fast, medium and slow. To avoid breaking and soft spots, beginners often take the medium action. This would help keep you from breaking the fish. If there are some available people to give you a crash course on casting, it is advisable that you take such.

Fish

The type of fish can also be a great consideration on which beginner fishing rod to take. The rods can determine whether you are ready to catch what type of fish. At the same time, this can also determine where you should go that you can get the best out of your fly fishing rod. Whether you would like to catch trout or other types of fish, make sure that you do have the right type of rods as well as the other fishing gears.

 Fly Fishing Site

The places where you would be going can also influence the type and built of rod that you are going to buy. This goes hand in hand with the fish species you are expecting to catch. The site sometimes also determines the length of the rod. The tighter the space, the shorter the rods to be used to make sure that you do not tangle on anything.

All other considerations when finding the perfect rods always boils down to one, you. You decide on the grip and the comfort level of the rod. All other considerations are guides, but at the end of the day, you decide which best fits into your hands and what you think should be your rod. After all, you would be spending the time with your sage fly fishing rod.

Fly Fishing For Beginners

Fly Fishing for Beginners

You take the time to get into just the right location in that great stream that your friend told you about.  You have been waiting for so long to enjoy this time, alone, fishing to your heart's content.  There are many amazing moments in life but fly fishing is one of your favorite.  You'll get into the waders, getting into just that right location so that you can cast.

The tip of your rod should be in the four o' clock position with 20 feet (6 meters) of line extended beyond your rod's tip. Trap the line between the rod handle and your index finger. To begin the back cast, bend your elbow, raise your forearm and move the rod tip from four o'clock to eleven thirty and lift the line from the water. Pause for a moment at this point to allow the line to extend behind you before casting the rod forward. Allow the rod to follow through as the line extends to its full length in front of you. Then continue to work the line in this manner. A fish strikes. The fight is on and you successfully land the fish. This is fly casting.

Fly fishing is an old method of angling. It was primarily developed to catch trout and salmon. Today, it is still used to fish these species, but is also used to catch bass, carp, pike and a wide range of saltwater fish. The difference between casting and fly fishing is that in casting you use the weight of your bait, sinker and bobber to propel your cast. In fly fishing, the weight of the line propels your line forward and puts your fly into position. The fly cannot do this, as it is essentially weightless. The goal in fly fishing is to present the fly gently and to always be in control of it.

When you fly fish, you need special fishing equipment that includes a fly rod and reel, a special fly fishing line and artificial or live flies. These are tied onto your hook with feathers, fur, thread or other materials in colors and sizes that represent natural prey. The key to successful fly fishing is balance. The rod, reel and line, as well as the tippet all have to match in order to have a positive fly fishing experience.

Rod, Reels and Lines
Fly fishing rods are lightweight and long. The line provides the casting weight and is heavy. It can be of differing density, depending on whether you want the fly to sink or float. Line is matched to your rod by weight. Look near the fly rod butt to find out what line weight must be used. Graphite rods are best because they can produce any action that you wish to use. If you are a beginner, buy a basic and moderately priced rod, or borrow one from a family member or friend.

Flies and Leaders
Flies weigh very little. The fly is usually attached to the line by a leader that is two to three meters in length (6 to 9 feet). The leader often tapers to a fine end. This is called a tippet. Tippet size range from 8X, which is the smallest, to 0X, which is the largest. Tippets are set in units of .001 inches. To match the tippet to the fly, you must subtract from eleven and multiply by .001.

For example to find the diameter of a 4X tippet, you would subtract four from eleven. That equals seven. Now, multiply by .001. This size would be .007. What if you have a # 18 fly? How would you calculate tippet size? You would put eighteen over four and calculate. The answer would be 4.5. Since there is no 4.5 X tippet, you would move to the next largest size, which would be 5.

Types of Fly Fishing
There are two types of fly fishing - dry and wet. Wet flies are fished beneath the water surface and are divided into several types, including live wet flies, lures and nymphs. Dry flies float on the water surface and are coated with a substance called, 'floatant' to make this possible.

If you are interested in fly fishing and can't decide which equipment you need to have a positive fishing experience, ask an experienced angler for help. This can be a family member, friend, someone from the local angler's club or a staff member of the local fly fishing shop. Fly fishing is not as hard to learn as it appears to be. Have fun and enjoy that big catch.

The best way to enjoy your catch is to take the time to enjoy the many wonders that the fishing experience offers.  No matter what that first adventure turns out to be, you can make it amazing by spending some time learning the skills from an experienced fisherman.
