Choosing Fly Fishing Equipment

As the popularity of fly fishing has grown, so has the availability, and choice, of  gear to use for this very enjoyable sport. This means though, that unless you really know what you are looking for, the choice of equipment can be rather overwhelming. The best advice is, just focus on the basics and you'll find the gear you need to truly enjoy your fly fishing. Having said that, as with most things, you get what you pay for. So don't go for the cheapest you can find. If a piece of equipment is relatively inexpensive, find out why before purchasing, or you may find that you've wasted your money.

Basic Gear for Fly Fishing

The Rod

First and foremost, you need the right fishing rod. Without the right rod, the rest of the gear is meaningless. In the beginning, flexible fly fishing rods were made from sturdy wood. Next came treated and reinforced bamboo rods.

Bamboo was a step up from the original wooden rods and increased the quality of the fishing experience. Many anglers still use these and wouldn't swop them for anything else. A good bamboo rod though can be extremely expensive, as many hours work has to go into it's construction. The most recent advance in materials is carbon fiber, or fiberglass.

Rods made for fly fishing are heavier than the normal fishing rods. Fiberglass gives weight to the rod, while still maintaining flexibility. The additional weight also gives the rod a smooth and clean cast. When selecting your rod, be aware that the smoothness of the cast can vary from rod to rod. You can choose from fast action rods, which are only flexible at the tip, to medium action, which are flexible for around half their length, right to the other end of the scale, slow action rods, which are flexible throughout their length.

The Fishing Reel

As with the rods, fly fishing reels are larger and heavier than a normal fishing reel. They are also more durable. These reels possess a distinctive design which allows it to work in unison with the rod. This means that the rod and the reel must be compatible with other. This factor is much more important in fly fishing than in normal fishing. So when you decide to purchase your gear, it would be wise to buy the rod and the reel at the same time. It is possible to buy a combination set, where everything is matched for you. If you already have a rod, then take it with you when you buy the reel. That way you can ensure they will work together as one unit.

The Fly

The most important piece of fly fishing equipment is also the tiniest, the replicated fly. Selecting a fly can be difficult. There is a huge selection of flies from which to choose, and different flies are designed to catch different types of fish. Before you purchase your flies, decide what type of fish you want to catch. Otherwise, instead of the perfect break from stress described above, you'll just get frustrated when you catch nothing.

The Clothes

Okay, clothes aren't really important in fly fishing, anything comfortable will do although bright colors are not a good idea, as with any kind of hunting, try and blend in with your surroundings. Remember also, that you may be wading out into cold water, so buy yourself a good set of rubber waders. You'll enjoy your fly fishing experience more if you're warm and dry.

Fly Fishing and The Right Equipment!

When fly fishing you need a calm temperament, be able to switch off and keep repeating the same technique without getting frustrated. This is half the battle, the other half is the right equipment. Of coarse you need sun glasses so you do not have to squint from the sun and maybe a hat but most importantly the tackle makes all the difference.

When choosing a rod, should you go for a modern composite graphite rod or an old fashioned bamboo rod? Should you choose a rod for one particular water or setting or go with a multi purpose rod. All these factors will come into the equation when choosing a rod to cast your flies. Talking of flies, this is another area where choice is important. Do you go for a dry fly or go for an insect replica. The colour of the fly could also be important, is there a colour for morning and a different one for night.
Another thing to think about is weather you want to learn how to tie your own flies or are you better off buying them already done.

The choice of rod and fly could also affect the decision as to what line you will use.
The type of line you use may be also be influenced by what fish you are fishing for, larger fish will need a heavier line as appose to smaller fish. You will have to decide on weather you want your line to float or sink, weather your fish feed on the surface or on the bottom.

Some anglers are quite happy to use a bomber or swim feeder, just cast their line out and relax on the riverbank and wait. Fly fishing on the other hand is much more a hands on approach; you need to be fully concentrated on the task ahead of you. Tackle decisions can make the difference between having a fantastic day and having a ordinary day.

Most fly fishermen take it very seriously; it takes patience, dedication and practice to become a good fly fisherman. Choosing the right rod can be very tricky, with lots of different people having different ideas. Below are a few choices to help you.

Fibreglass- A large number of rods these days are made from fibreglass, whether they are for fly fishing or regular fishing. The main downside of fibreglass rods is that they are heavier than graphite or bamboo rods which in turn could make your arm tired at the end of the day. Despite this they are able to take a lot of punishment which makes them a popular choice.

Bamboo- Many of the older fishermen will not here a bad word said about these rods. Of coarse this is just someones opinion, but they were one of the first rods to be made and are still being made today. There is a lot that goes into making a bamboo rod and for this reason they can tend to be one of the most expensive.

Graphite- These tend to be quite stiff but that does not mean they are not effective.
These rods give good flexibility and are quite strong. they give good performance and they can vary in price difference and quality.

Reels are another important piece of equipment, the abel fly reel is considered one of the best around. A lot of parts are interchangeable from one reel to another making this a good choice. Also it does not matter if you are left or right handed as they can be converted easily from one to another.

How to Play and Land Your Fish (part Five - Reels)

When using a fly reel, there isn't always a brake, or drag to help you. To prevent big fish from running you can exert varying degrees of thumb pressure inside the spool. Without such pressure there is a real risk that your line will overrun and backlash, with the sometimes "interesting" feature of the "bird's nest," however, watch out for your knuckles when the reel handle starts spinning.

With an automatic fly reel, you retrieve the line by pressing a lever, and the reel does the work. Having said that, never play a fish on the spring of an automatic reel. Use the hand retrieve method to take the line in. When you want to wind the retrieved line onto the reel, then use the lever. The automatic reel was never intended to be a mechanical fish player.

Another point with automatics, always run the line between the fingers of your free hand. Pressing the lever without controlling the line this way will mean that there's a good chance you will run ALL the line onto the reel before you have a chance to release the lever. Resulting into the hook slamming into the tip of your rod, with the almost inevitable result of breaking something.

Line reeled onto the spool of a single action fly reel can form ridges high enough to jam against the cross braces of the reel frame. You can avoid these ridges by using your little finger on your non-winding hand as a level wind device. As the line comes in, simply push it to the right side of the spool, then hook it back to the left side. This will give you a smooth, level spool of line that won't jam your reel at the critical moment when playing a large fish.

So, we can see that an item that many of us take for granted is actually an integral part of the fishing process. As a final thought, always keep your reel(s) well maintained. This is especially important when fishing salt water, given it's highly corrosive properties. It doesn't take but a few minutes at the end of the day to clean, dry, and lightly oil your reel, and you will be repaid with many years of trouble free service. When using fixed spool spinning reels, give a thought to having a couple of spare spools in your tackle box, loaded with different breaking strain lines. This will give you more flexibility when you actually get to your fishing spot and see what type of conditions you are having to fish.

Question by DerickR: how old is a martin model 63 fly reel?
i have a model 63 martin fly reel, i was wondering on how old this reel may be?

Best answer:

Answer by rifleman
It was first made in 1941-1949

Give your answer to this question below!

Fly fishing is a completely different breed of fishing, employing different tactics and different tackle.

Fly fishing tackle is not generally suited for, say, shark fishing and vice versa.

Rods for fly fishing differ from other kinds of rod. They are thinner and more flexible. Probably the most noticeable difference between fly rods and other rods is their lack of a butt section. This deliberate omission, which gives fly fishing rods their distinct look, is designed to prevent interference with the casting movements.

An important element of your fly fishing tackle is the line. Unlike traditional fishing tackle set ups where the weight of the lure pulls the line out, the fly is generally of very little weight so relies on the weight of the line to unfurl to its target. Because of this, fly fishing line is much heavier than its regular fishing counterpart.

Compared to traditional fishing reels, the fly fishing reel (a Centrepin Reel) is a simple piece of tackle. Acting mainly as a storage device for the line, they have few other functions. Earlier examples of fly reels had no drag mechanism, slowing of the fish was done by simply "palming the rim". In recent years, fly fishing reels have evolved somewhat, employing disc drag mechanisms, though they still remain relatively simple devices.

Every successful fly angler has an arsenal of artificial flies to lure his catch. Flies come in hundreds of different varieties. With colourful names such as Nymphs, Zonkers, Buzzers, Wooly buggers and other exotic names, you may be confused.

Flies are made from a wide variety of natural and synthetic materials, such as, to name a few, hair, mylar and rubber. They are designed to have the appearance and behaviour of the prey of the target fish. This could be, as the name suggests, flies or anything else the fish like to feed on, such as worms, insects, vegetation, even mammals and birds! The fly acts in the same way as bait in more traditional forms of fishing. It is attached to a hook, which hooks the fish when it makes a move at the bait.

Flies are generally very affordable, individual flies costing in the region of 50p – £2 (you can buy in bulk and get them even cheaper). There is however a huge number of people who get great joy from making and fishing their own flies.

Another sometimes overlooked element to fly fishing tackle is clothing. We are not blessed with the best weather in the UK so it is important that you are comfortable for your time fishing. If you go out for your first day of fly fishing and find yourself shivering all day, the chances are you won’t want to go again so a warm set of waterproof clothing is of the utmost importance.

You should also invest in a decent set of waders. Because of the limitation on casting distance with no weight on the end of the line, you are often required to wade out a little to be able to reach the target fish.

With an apparently unending array of gear and gadgets, fly fishing seems to be a varied and interesting sport. Most of the available options could be confusing to anyone who is new to Fly fishing. Anyone with a flair for fishing should know the important accessories about it. The 10 common pieces concerning fly fishing gear include a reel, fly fishing rod, line, files, leader, waders, net, clippers, vest and sunglasses.

Fly fishing rod

This rod is one of the mandatory equipments for fly fishing. These rods are usually different when compared to regular and conventional fishing rods and are designed in unique manner. It would allow casting the fly and fly line. Rods today are often constructed using types of graphite compounds. Many of the rods are still structured from bamboo or fiberglass. The Fly rods are usually categorized based upon weights of line they are structured to be used with.

Reels

The Fly fishing reels essentially, are less significant than the rods. Unlike conventional fishing, along with fly fishing one does not reel in the fish. The Fly fishing methods involve stripping the line with free hand. Quite many fly fishing reels actually are of primitive designs and hence not so very expensive. Anglers commonly "palm" the reel for creating the drag, than relying upon internal drag mechanisms within the reel.

Line

The Fly fishing line has been specially designed for such style of fishing. Fly fishing line is considerably heavy compared to traditional fishing line. It is often tapered and designed for floating. Some lines are designed to sink, though. Some anglers attach backer line in between fly fishing line and reel so as to increase the line available.

Leader

The leader is a monofilament, clear line which attaches to the extreme end of fly fishing line. Additionally, the fly is tied to the leader at the end. This leader is further tapered down into a narrow diameter towards the forward end. Leader matches more with the traditional fishing line.

The Flies

They are available in huge assortments of designs and styles. The dry flies are designed so that they float up in the water, nymphs and wet flies are structured for submerging, and few other flies are made to partially submerge. Flies could also be implied as attractive or imitative. Imitative flies are deliberated to imitate or manifest like a specific insect. On the other hand, attractive flies are structured to attract the fists not looking towards any specific natural food source.

The Waders

Waders are optional when you fish in warm water. But a few anglers go fly fishing in cold water streams to find waders enormously essential. Some popular wader styles currently include waders with waterproof lining and neoprene waders. Neoprene waders work very well in the cold water stream and serve in keeping the angler warm. The waders having a waterproof lining prove to be convenient and breathable when one goes hiking flanking a stream.

Net

A net is essential equipment for fly fishing. As fly fishing is often done standing in the waters, it could be not very easy to hunt a fish without good nets. Nets always have a hook attached. This would help the net so that it could be hooked on the anglers' vest or waders. A net is particularly important in cases when the angler is trying to catch and release fishing.

Fishing Vest

As fly fishing is always tried in the water, a fishing vest seems to be a near-essential equipment piece. Vests would allow you in keeping essential gear and tools handy and neat as and when you find its necessity.

Clippers

Clippers are quite useful for clipping the line when you change the flies. You would rarely notice any fly fisherman with no clippers in their pocket or vest.

Sunglasses

Sunglasses are pieces of personal gear which you would never want to forget. They would keep the sun to not reach your eyes and also protect them from stray fishing hooks. Polarized and good quality sunglasses would also assist in a better vision while you are out near the stream. Most anglers would also append a sunscreen and a hat to the catalog of personal gear which is essential.

There are other pieces of gadgets and gear which are available for every fly fisherman. The above mentioned ten items are perhaps among the most essential ones required for a successful and fun outing.

Some people refer to fly fishing as an art. It is graceful to watch and quite amazing to see expert anglers dancing the fly on the water. In order to partake in this angling dance you need the proper fly fishing rod-reel combo. Fly fishing rod-reel combos can be purchased as a set or one can pair up their own.

There are several different types of fly-fishing reels; small, medium, and large arbors. The size of the arbor relates to how much line your reel uses per crank of the rod. Qualities to look for in your fly fishing reel are if they are made of a high quality aluminum, designed for precision, have a smooth drag with instant line release, waterproof and corrosion free. You can purchase fly fishing reels now for left or right-handed anglers and some companies offer reels that have been ergonomically designed for the avid angler to avoid undo stress on the anglers' wrist.

There are three basic fly fishing actions used, slow, medium and fast. Slow action rods are great with smaller fish and are extremely bendable. They are great for accuracy but can be difficult to control for a novice angler. The slow action rods are best for short-range casting. For novice anglers, the medium action rod is better. They still have the flexibility needed in the middle and tip of the rod and are great for any range casting.

The fast action fly fishing rods do not offer much bend except in the tip. They are better suited for long-range casting and bigger fish. Rod length is also significant in your choice. Short rods measure less then eight feet, have less action, and are a good choice for smaller creeks or streams. Medium rods range between eight and nine feet and are universal as far as cast lengths and water types. Large fly fishing rods measure over nine feet and are best suited for larger fish and bodies of water.

Fly-fishing rods are made out of fiberglass or graphite. Graphite is the more expensive of the two but due to their lightweight in nature, allow for better accuracy. Fiberglass is universal in use but actually holds up longer then the graphite. The rod material ultimately is more of a personal preference. The anglers grip on the rod is important in relation to the size of game. The Cigar grip works well for smaller fish. Half-Well grips are generally on medium rods and work well for medium sized fish. The Full-Well grips you will find on large rods for large game fish.

Your fly fishing rod and reel combo does not have to be expensive to be effective. In pairing up your own set, make sure your reel balances out your rod; large reel requires a large rod. By matching up your rod, to your reel to the intended target, you cannot go wrong.

Before you head to the store with your money and start shopping for fishing reels, you need to think long and hard about what you need. If you're familiar with what's available, you already know that the selection is pretty wide and can be hard to navigate. That's why your best course of action is to begin at home with some research and go into the store ready already knowing what type of fishing reels will work best for your specific needs.

Let's look at those different types of fishing reels.

Fishing Reels: Casting

Casting fishing reels are used for exactly what the name suggests. If you're doing mostly inshore fishing and you need to get that bait or lure into the water, you're going to probably focus on these types of reels. They actually have a fairly long history in fishing and most were developed from some early, popular models that developed in the 19th century.

Within casting reels, you'll also find level winding and non-level winding varieties. The one you choose depends mostly on what feels right for you so test out a few different models of each before settling on your preference.

Fishing Reels: Spinning

Another popular type of fishing reels is the spinning ones. These reels first hit the United States when they were introduced hear during the mid 20th century from Europe. After that, their popularity among fishers exploded and they continue to be a popular choice for inshore fishing. One major advantage is cost. You'll spend a lot less on these types of fishing feels than either of the ones listed below. Keep in mind that these types of fishing reels come in two types as well: open face and closed face. Again, you'll want to do some hands-on testing at your favorite fishing ground to see which variation works best for you.

Fishing Reels: Fly

If you're planning on doing any fly fishing, then you'll want to choose these types of fishing reels for your needs. Nothing else will work quite as well for most fishers. These reels tend to be narrower even when they have larger spool diameters. Most also don't have gearing. As fly fishing has become more popular, the price of these reels has begun to increase so keep that in mind when you're beginning to search for the right fishing reels for your needs.

Fishing Reels: Trolling

These are the best reels to use if you're interested in doing some deep water or bottom fishing, such as for catfish and similar species of fish. Although in many ways they look like fly fishing reels, you'll probably notice that they are larger and have wider diameters. Prices on these types of fishing reels, which are primarily designed for offshore fishing, can be a bit steep. However, if you're serious about catching certain fish then you're absolutely going to need to make the investment.

Remember as you're searching for fishing reels your best choice is to browse online at shops like Sea Isle Tackle.

Martin Mountain Brook Series Fly Fishing Reels

In the past, fly fishing was a technique most often used to catch salmon and trout, but things have changed over the years. Fly fishing is now used to catch a wide range of different fish, including panfish, crap, bonefish, pike, bass, and more! With this type of fishing, you catch fish by using artificial flies that are cast with a special rod and line.

To achieve success with this particular type of fishing, choosing the best fly fishing reel is important. By opting for quality reels, such as Penn reels, you can greatly improve your chances of catching the type of fish you want. Don't make the mistake of assuming the reel you use is just a simple piece of equipment, it is an item that must work well with your line, leader, and flies for the best results.

Most fly fishing reels are made from aluminum. You must consider your fishing destinations when making your purchase because it will have an impact. For example, salt water fishermen want a reel with anodized polish to prevent the effects of salt from causing damage.

As previously stated, never assume that your reel is just a single piece of equipment you need to buy. It must be matched up with line weight and rod for the best casting possible. For example, a five-weight rod must be matched with a five-weight reel.

Another mistake is not considering the different types of reels available. You want to familiarize yourself with these differences.

For example:

Single Action Reels: These are the most popular and most used; they are ideal for novice fishermen. With this reel, the fly is positioned on a spool and the handle connects to the spool instead of a gear system. With one single crank of the handle, you get one spool revolution.
Multiplier Reels: Unlike single-action reels, they fasten to the gear system and this means multiple spool revolutions with one single crank. The greatest benefit of opting for this type of reel, like Penn reels, is the quick line retrieval.
Automatic Reels: While lots of fishermen have claimed that an automatic reel takes away from the sport and the challenge, its increase in popularity due to ease of use. It allows for you to just flick a lever to recover the line.

One of the best ways to find out what type of fishing reel is best for you, is to talk to other fishermen. Make sure the fishermen you ask for opinions fish in the same type of environment as you, and have a similar price range or budget for their fishing equipment.

We have seen that sales of Penn reels are particularly strong, and reading reviews of Penn reels by other fisherman will show you that they are prized for their durability.

Please visit our website, and find out for yourself which fishing reels are right for you. You'll find a great selection of Penn reels and other sports fishing equipment.

Before choosing a particular saltwater fly fishing reel it is decidedly very necessary that you identify the place where you will be doing your saltwater fly fishing. Different saltwater fly fishing reels are available depending on whether you plan to do your fishing close to the shore or out in the deep waters. As a matter of fact companies such as Daiwa have come out with their own line of products known as Steez which provide anglers with special reels which are ideally suited for use only to catch bass fish.

Light Weight Reels

You would of course do well to choose lighter weight saltwater fly fishing reels whenever you plan on angling close to the shore. Otherwise, you will also need to choose from different models of spinning reels including those that weigh about fewer than seven ounces and those that weigh more than seven ounces. A good such saltwater fly fishing reel should also be made of the appropriatecorrect material (preferably magnesium or titanium or composites that are light in weight) and which also incorporates corrosion resistant parts, particularlyits ball bearings which will prevent damage to the reel when the reel is plunged in saltwater.

When looking for different brands of saltwater fly fishing reels you would do well to take a look at those made by Penn Spinfisher. The biggest advantage to choosing these fishing reels is that they are able to totally withstand the uncompromising saltwater conditions and a balance rotor also helps to ensure ideal and steady performance at all times. It is also important to determine how well a saltwater fly fishing reel is able to stay aligned even under intense water pressure and the torque too should be good enough to allow you to reel in your catch without much difficulty.

Saltwater fly fishing reels from Spinfisher are highly regarded by experts and by saltwater fishermen and one of the reasons why this particular reel is so highly thought of is its drag knob that has been specially designed to seal it from contaminants as well as from saltwater. With these kinds of features you can rest assured that your saltwater fly fishing reel will keeps its integrity as well as alignment – both of which are important to get the most out of saltwater fly fishing.

Saltwater fly fishing is something that West Coast fly fishers are finding to be very exciting though in order to get the most out of their fly fishing in saltwater it is necessary to possess the right kind of skills as well as the best saltwater fly fishing equipment. It is for this reason that it is necessary that you know the proper methods to fly fish in saltwater and also have the right equipment to make the task of saltwater fly fishing easy and uncomplicated.

Once you've decided to get into fly fishing as a hobby or a sport there is a lot of equipment to purchase. You can buy them online or at your local fishing store depending on your convenience and prices. Fly fishing rods are the primary piece of fishing equipment that one has to procure. Following that the next most important piece of fly fishing equipment will be the fly fishing reels and fishing flies as well. When buying fly fishing reels and fishing flies you will have to do some amount of research and choose the product that suits your fishing style the best.

There are several types of fishing reels available. The most common ones of these would be the centre pin fishing reel, bait casting reel, spin reel, spin cast reel and under spin reel. Of these, the centre pin reels is the fly fishing reel that is used most commonly for fly fishing. To buy fly fishing reels one must consider the various factors that will play a major role in your selection. The first thing, is the size of the reel that you choose. The reels come in differing sizes and you have to choose the size that suits you best for your fishing needs. If you are fly fishing for small fish in freshwater lakes, a smaller reel would suffice, but when you are in the open sea, a large spool would be the better option as it would give you more line. There are a few reels which have the option of interchanging spools which means that you can buy several lines of differing sizes and change them when you need them. This makes for a lot of cost savings if you regularly switch between freshwater and the high seas.

Consider the different types of reel functions hat are available. This can primarily be categories as single action reel and multiple reels. The single action fly fishing reels are very simple to use with one rotation of the handle giving one rotation of the reel. They are pretty light weighted and hence pretty easy to handle as well. The multiple reels make rotation easier by way of allowing one turn of the handle to produce more than one turn of the reel. This allows for easier rotation of the reel but then tends to be heavier thanks to having multiple reels. Another thing that you should consider with fly fishing reels is the size of the arbour on the reel. The larger the arbour, the easier it is to retrieve in the line that has been cast.

Fishing flies traditionally were hand made by the fishermen themselves. Today one does not have the time and patience to do so and hence one can easily procure high quality handmade fishing flies at any fishing store. The flies that you buy come in a variety of patterns and you wish have to choose the fishing flies depending on the type of fish you want to catch and the feeding habits of that variety of fish. Some advanced fishers do still prefer to tie their own flies, the patterns for which they have fine tuned through their experience of fly fishing.

Before you buy your very first fly fishing reel, it is important that you understand very well about the basics of these very simple fishing reels.

Getting your first fly reel may be a shock for you particularly if you have been doing bait fishing for many years. Fly fishing reels are quite easy to use. Below is some essential tips you might want to be familiar with before finally purchasing your first fly fishing reel for your fishing trip.

The Basics Of Fly Fishing Reels:

Holes:

You may become aware of that a reel has holes on the side. The hole acts as drainage for the water from the line.

Adjustable Drag:

This is very important especially if you have plans of catching very large and strong freshwater or saltwater fish. Maybe you are scheduling to take a trip to catch some big game fish, recognize that you will have to struggle a little to reel in the fish, just like you do with bait fishing.

Single Action:

This is perfect as your first fly reel. This single action fishing reel means that in a single turn of the handle, it simultaneously revolves the spool, keeping it back in place.

Saltwater Reels:

These types of fly fishing reels are specifically designed for use in saltwater. These reels have larger diameters, larger lines, and higher backing capacity to withstand longer runs of strong fish. Since corrosion is a main problem in saltwater fishing, make sure you go for reels that use stainless steel, aerospace aluminum, brass, or even electroplated stainless steel.

Replaceable Spools:

If you are passionate about doing varied types of fishing, see to it that you look for reels with easy replaceable spools. This will permit you to use both the floating line and the sinking line all with the same reel.

Weight:

Your line\'s weight ought to match with the designs of your fly fishing reels. Meaning, if your fly fishing reel is intended for a 4-weight line, be certain to have the 4 weight line and vice versa, the similar to when you have a 4 weight fly reel, then you should have a 4 weight-rod. Nonetheless, both the 3 and 5 weight work efficiently well with a 4 weight fly reel.

First Fly Fishing Reel:

Casting a Rod - When casting a fly fishing rod, it is a bit different than casting with any other rod. You need not touch the fishing reel while you are casting the rod. The reel itself will hold the line, thus making it not a part of the casting process any longer. Instead, you pull out the line manually from the reel and allow it to lie loose towards your feet, making sure to feed it out with your free hands when you need it.

The information above is some of the essential things you should be familiar with before you purchase your first fly fishing reel. If you still have any questions, don\'t hesitate to ask fishing tackle suppliers to advise you about fly fishing reels. They can assist you to decide which is the best reel possible for your fishing activities.

Fly Fishing Reel

What is the best fishing rod and reel for trout fishing(both fly and spinning)?

Fly rod is hands down an Orvis Zero Gravity Helios - even though it will set you back $750 I cannot think of a rod in all my years (35+)
of fly fishing that even comes close. If you want to spend alot less and still have a real good one think of the ECHO series of rods starting at $149.
Spinning - Any 5'6" fast action rod made by St. Croix or Loomis will be
the absolute ticket for fishing all but the largest of rivers. On the large waters, go with a 7' fast action of St. Croix or Loomis and you'll be fine.

Understanding Different Types of Fishing Reels
