do i have a fishing problem?

i am constantly wanting more and more fly fishing and/or fly tying materials...even if i dont have the money i still look and want...do i have a problem or am i just addicted to it?
no i dont spend necesary money...im still a kid...still at home....

Nah, it'll pass. And I know exactly WHEN it will pass. It will pass when:

...you have a stockpile of materials that you are accustomed to working on and when you have enough to tie the flies you need.

...you have the necessary tools to easily and conveniently tie the flies you need.

...you have tried all the funky and interesting materials, tools, books, etc., you see online or in the fly shop. You will sort out the things that are really useful and what is merely faddish or excessive, and you have narrowed your commonly used materials and tools to the ones you really need and use.

...you have learned most of the basic techniques and can easily tie the flies you need for an upcoming excursion.

..the novelty has worn away from this new hobby, and it's more like fishing itself (you still look forward to and enjoy it, but you're not so ga-ga about it).

Once those conditions have been met, your life will go back to more-or-less normal, and you'll just be fly tier. You might still be obsessed, but the obsession will "settle down" somewhat so you can do the other things in life that give us enjoyment -- like eat, sleep, go to the toilet, etc.

what are the top 5 south american flys for fly fishing??? emergency- need anwers fast!?

i need the top five flys for south america??? i do alot of fly fishing in north america, but need them for south! thank you all very much!
are south and north america flies pretty similar/?? because those given are very popular north american flies....

You will get a variety of answers mainly because of where people fish and what they are fishing for and also personal opinion.

For dries I would have to say the top dry is the Adams and then possibly the Royal Wulff and possibly the Blue Wing Olive.

For streamers, the best bet is the Woolly Bugger in black or olive or brown or many other color choices.

For nymphs there are a lot of choices, but possibly the Pheasant Tail, Hares Ear and the San Juan Worm.

But then that is only my opinion.

Everything You Need to Know about Bass Flying Fishing

Fly fishing is a challenging and fun activity for many fly fishermen. The challenge is to catch different species of fish. Yet, even catching a fish in fly fishing is already a challenge because it is never easy to master fly fishing. Fly fishing success has many factors. One factor the right choice of lures of fly fishing flies. These are used to imitate insects to lure fish and catch them eventually. The lures or flies may either be surface lures of below the surface lures. Common lures are the surface lures and these types of lures can catch big fishes such as the bass.

Bass fly fishing are now being done in fly fishing tournaments. The challenge is to catch many bass or to catch a bass fast. Most fly fishermen practice hard to master the perfect casting in order to create some commotion that will imitate surface animals to attract the bass. Catching bass in fly fishing is a challenge especially on strong fights on the water (bass are big and they put up a fight when they are catched). Bass are keen in waiting to pounce on their prey just as fly fishermen are keen on waiting for their fish.

The bass are easily attracted to surface flies especially if has distinct color. Most fly fishermen make their own lures when they want to catch bass. Bass fly fishing is dependent on the type of lure being used. The key to bass fly fishing success is on attracting the bass to the lures. This can be done by using dark colors such as brown, black or purple when it the horizon is dimming. Bass fly fishing is usually done when the sun begins to set because this is the time when they start to look for food because surface insects are available. Bass lures or flies can also be made using lighter colors because bass will pounce on any insect. There are insect that have light colors and making a bright colored lure or flies will surely attract the bass. Bass are after big insects but there are occasions that they are up for smaller insects which makes small flies feasible for catching bass.

Aside from the color of the flies, the movement is also a strategy to master when wanting to catch a bass. Each fly fisherman has their techniques in moving their bass bugs. They may cast it on the water without making it move on the surface for a few minutes then give it a slight twitch or movement to make bass think that it is a live insect. Bass are just waiting to pounce on their prey and it can be fun to lure them into some non-living flies and catch them easily. Bass fly fishing might seem easy but it is much more complicated when being studied.

Using the dry fly fishing technique, the angler casts the fly upstream hoping that the trout will rise up and bite the fly as it passes overhead. Wet fly-fishing involves fishing beneath the surface of the water and can be divided into lures fishing, true wet fly-fishing and nymph fishing.

Fly-fishing tackle, and fly-fishing reels and rods are all commonly used fly-fishing equipment. Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, California, Idaho and more recently New Mexico are all popular fly-fishing areas in the U.S.. British Columbia and Alberta are also very popular.

The popularity of fly-fishing has increased dramatically in recent years. It is definitely a fast growing sport and it’s easy to see why; it’s relaxing, enjoyable and rewarding. Usually, fly-fishing anglers practice the sport in the most beautiful areas of the world. Fly-fishermen worldwide are known to have an on going love affair with their sport.

Beginning fly-fishing anglers may have difficulty learning the sport. Probably the best place to learn is a fly-fishing school or from a fly-fisherman that is willing to take you on as a student. Fly line and leader for trout using the L2L reconnet system advice?

What do you know about fly lines and leaders using the new 3M L2L reconnect system!!

I tried the L2L system...............it lasted one trip.
Truthfully, I see no reason to use it. The tried and true nail knot to your flyline is (IMO) still the best way to go.
You can always put on a strike indicator of your choice when fishing nymphs. With the L2L system, the indicator (the connector) is always in the same place, by manually attacing an indicator, you can put it where it needs to be - general rule of thumb is one and a half the depth of the water you're fishing.

To answer one of your questions: "What fly rod and line i.e. balanced system is good for small trout on small rivers?"

a 7'6" or 8' medium/fast action rod - say a Sage 7'9" VTS 4wt
or a St. Croix 8' 4wt Triumph should fit the bill nicely. I reccomend Scientific Anglers GPX line. It is super slick, no memory and casts better than any flyline I've ever used. Usually a 9' leader tapered to 5x will handle any fly down to size 16. you can always tie on a piece of 6x or 7x tippet when going to size 18 or smaller dries or trim it back abit when using streamers and such.

Next question: "Need to know what is the right choice for all 4 of my rigs? 2, 4, 6 and 8 weight rods?"

The lighter the rod, the more delicate the presentation and the lighter the tippet should be. You'd be better off fishing your 2wt with tiny blue wings, midges and tricos with a 12 ft leader tapered to 7x tippet than using your 8wt rod.

A 4wt rod with a 9ft leader tapered to 5x will fill the bill for most trout fishing applications.

a 6wt rod with a 9ft leader tapered to 4x will work nicely on larger rivers using larger dries and streamers/nymphs/wooly-boogers.

Your 8 wt with a 9ft leader tapered to 3x should be used for steelhead or lake fishing for largemouth bass with big flies.

Next question: "How dose anyone knows what is best for their style of FLY FISHING?? Moreover dose it matter other than the fly and presentation?"

By trial and error. Yes, the choice of fly and the presentation is (of course) critical, but being able to read the water and knowing what is happening on the water while you are out fly fishing is even more critical. Meaning being: Is there a hatch?
What is hatching? Are they taking duns or emergers ? You have to look carefully at what's happening before you make a decision of what to tie on. Sometimes there are multiple hatches, just watch what the trout are doing before you start casting to them. And before you start casting, look at the stream: are there cross currents, will I have to mend, where is my drift going to go ? Figure it out and you'll put your fly over more fish.

Fly fishing is just as much about observing as it is about casting.

The truth is this: What works best for me, may not work best for you. Just because someone "said so" does not make it Gospel truth. There are many fine rods/reels/flylines to choose from, it comes down to pesonal preference and what works best for you.

I find that tieing my own leaders works best for me. I can always tie on thinner tippet, or trim back to heavier tippet.
Learning to tie a blood knot is not difficult. Always carry
a few spools ot tippet material with you so you can adjust to situations on the fly (pun intended).

I always learn the waters I am going to fish so I know what the hatches may be during that time of year. I generally take one
fly box of those flies that are likely to occur in wets, emergers,
duns and spinners as well as some attractor flies, nymphs and streamers. Your local flyshop will be able to help you
on your area stream's hatches.

Fly Fishing For Crappie - Is it Possible to Catch Crappie Fly Fishing?

If you've never fished for crappie with a fly rod, then you've really missed something. In my opinion, crappies, and other panfish, are the ideal fly rod quarry for the following reasons;
There are plenty of them.
They are almost everywhere.
They are scrumptious!
They are incredibly willing to smash your fly (most of the time) and do battle.

Unless you live in Alaska or Hawaii, chances are good that you live within one or two hours from a body of water than has crappie in it. Crappies are seasonal migratory predators. I won't go into their seasonal habits here because that is a subject unto itself. Suffice to say it helps to know your quarry.

It's pretty simple for most of the year. If you find em..you'll catch em. The notable exception is summertime, when crappies get moody, sulk and suspend in open water. They frequently get lock-jaw at this time and will even refuse a live minnow dangled right under their nose!

You don't need a $1000.00 fly rod to catch crappie (or in my experience, any other freshwater fish). A $19.99 Wal-Mart special will catch just as many crappies as an $850.00 outfit from G. Loomis. For crappie, you want to go light. A 6-1/2 to 8-1/2 2 or 3 weight fly rod is perfect for crappie. If you want to chase crappie during the summer, you may want to move up to a 5 weight rod with a sinking line, to get your fly to the depths quicker.

All you need is a single action reel, and it does not have to be an expensive one. Next, you will need a WF2F, or WF3F, or ST fly line, or maybe a DT5S for summer. Top it off with a 5 tapered leader (crappie are not line-shy, so a long leader is not necessary) and a 4X or 5X tippet, and your almost ready to go.

A few accessories are nice to have. If you fish from a boat, and plan to crappie fish all year, a good depth finder is a necessity. You'll want a landing net, because crappies have very tender mouths and can tear-off easily. For the same reason, a floating fish basket or live well is good to have, because crappie can tear off of a stringer easily.

You'll need a lantern for night-fishing. If you don't have a boat, you might want to look at the various models of Belly Boats, or Float Tubes. They are great for crappie fishing in still waters.

Now, for the most fun part of flyfishing selecting your flies. You have two options: You can look for a supplier that ties the patterns you want, or you can do what the rest of us do, and tie your own. This is as much fun as fishing!

what is an easy fly patern that doesnt require a lot of material?

ok so im looking for a new fly fishing fly to tie...im running low on materials rite now and dont have a whole lot of money to buy any more...so im looking for something thats easy to tie and doesnt need many things to tie it with

you probably won't have the tiny hooks but midges would be good cuz you'll use next to nothing tying them. midges are the number 1 trout food throughout the year in most rivers(do some reading it is true...). if you had a little money then canadian brown leeches, sheep creek specials or stayner ducktails, all 3 of these do well in most stillwater. hairs ears perhaps? stoneflys can be done pretty plain too, and they work just as well as the high detail ones....

Without a good fly to help you catch fish a fly fishing trip is pretty much a waste of time. There are several ways of getting successful flies and if you intend on making your own fly fishing flies then be prepared to experiment a lot because the people that make the best fly fishing flies take years to learn what makes a fish bite and the best fly fishing flies are crafted from years of experience. But everything has to start somewhere and if you decide that you want to give making fly fishing flies a try then go right ahead. You are going to need fishing hooks, string, and then any material that you think will make a fish just want to bite at your hook without bait or anything like that at all.

The trick to fly fishing is casting where there is fish and then dragging your fly fishing flies across the water to entice the fish to take a bite of your hook. A fish is only going to go for a fly fishing fly for usually one of two main reasons. The first reason will be that the fly looks like a bug in the water that the fish finds appetizing. The other is that the colors of the fly fishing flies make the fish feel aggressive and cause the fish to bite on to the hook out of almost pure emotion. As you can see there are reasons why this takes years to get really good at.

What You Need To Make A Good Fly

Normally fly fishing flies are made of feathers, hair, string or anything that will look like a bug moving around in the water when you are moving your fly around. The fish has to believe that it is a bug or something else it really wants or else it will never take the bait. So make sure that you experiment with different materials that give the illusion of being a bug under water so that you can give your flies a chance of being successful.

Color is something that is also found in a good fly but knowing which colors affect a fish can take some time to figure out. The point of colors on a fly is to bring out aggression in a fish so when you choose colors you have to choose colors that will make the fish just want to bite on your hook. Sometimes it can be frustrating trying to make your own fly fishing flies so there is no shame in buying some pre-made ones, checking for their success, and using them as a model. That is what learning is all about!
