Fly fishing is a specific type of fishing and therefore requires a specific type of tackle. But to those who are new to fishing may ask "what is it?" and what is the difference between them? The general idea of the difference is that different fish can be caught because of the different tools used. Selecting a Reel for Fly Fishing

If you’re like me, you get your Orvis or LL Bean catalog or some other “wish book” in the mail and drool over the vast array of fly reels they have to offer. Modern reels are made from various grades of aluminum to high-grade plastic, and alloys unheard of before this century. Regardless of cost or material, there is one attribute they all have in common that you need to keep in mind:

Basically, a fly reel is nothing more than a place to keep your line. Period.

Oh, sure, reels have drag systems and high capacity spools and ball bearings, but, in the end, they are used because it’s hard to store 20 yards or so of fly line and another couple hundred yards of backing in your pocket without it getting tangled. But, really, the basic function of a fly reel is to hold your line in an organized manner.

Now, that being said, reels designed for large fish do require an effective drag system. Reels for most freshwater applications and many saltwater uses don’t have to have anything more than a rudimentary drag.

“What?” You say, “how can I fight a fish without a drag?” Well, friend, how do you think it was done in the old days before effective drags were developed? It’s simple—you fought the fish by controlling your line by retrieving it or playing it out with your off hand. When a fish took line, you doled it out to it as needed, creating the requisite drag by how tight you held the line. You also retrieved the line by stripping it in by hand. Tension in either direction was metered by your hands as line slipped through them. Obviously this is an iffy proposition when fighting large fish like tarpon and billfish. But that’s they way it was done, once upon a time.

For many of you experienced anglers, especially the older ones, you’ve played your fish by hand more than once and still do whenever reasonable. For you new ones it’s considered old school, which makes it “classical,” which makes it proper, again—when possible.

Okay, all that being kept in mind, how do you select a good reel that won’t cost you a fortune?

1. Buy a name brand. Name brand reels (and rods) can be trusted more so than off-brands for one simple reason: the maker has a name to protect and will not turn out a piece of junk just to make a buck. A good, entry-level reel will benefit the maker because a satisfied customer is more likely to by the same brand when it’s time to upgrade. Call Orvis if you don’t believe me.

2. Buy an exposed rim reel. Even though you may not be able to rely on the drag, you can apply palm pressure to the spool to supplement it. Drag can be increased or decreased as necessary with little effort. Note high-end reels: for the most part, they have exposed rims for that very purpose in spite of having the best drag systems known to man.

3. If buying aluminum, buy machined, not stamped. Stamped aluminum reels can warp and will bend if dropped. Stamped spools are prone to bending because they don’t really have the material strength to support themselves. Stamped reels can also get out-of-round if over-stressed. Only the smallest reels can get away with stamped spools, but always go for a cast or machined body.

4. Buy a reel that will readily hold the line and backing you need. An undersized reel will only cut down on the backing you need to effectively fight a fish by hand.

5. Buy quality, not glitz. The fish don’t care what color your reel is, neither should you if you are trying to buy wisely. If you are drawn to a more expensive reel because of its fancy coloration, spend that extra money on a better reel! “A fool and his money are soon parted” is a truism.

6. Take pride in your new-found ability to fight a fish by hand. When fighting a fish, let it take line as it needs it; don’t keep a death grip on the line, but meter the drag gently. Let your rod absorb shock. Let the line run when the fish goes on a hard run then gradually increase pressure. When the fish jumps, give it slack, “Bow to the King,” as we say in tarpon fishing. As your line goes slack, retrieve it quickly enough to prevent the hook from coming loose. Maintain constant tension without risking your tippet and your fish will succumb just as though you fought him off the reel. Or not.

How to Play and Land Your Fish (part Five - Reels)

When using a fly reel, there isn't always a brake, or drag to help you. To prevent big fish from running you can exert varying degrees of thumb pressure inside the spool. Without such pressure there is a real risk that your line will overrun and backlash, with the sometimes "interesting" feature of the "bird's nest," however, watch out for your knuckles when the reel handle starts spinning.

With an automatic fly reel, you retrieve the line by pressing a lever, and the reel does the work. Having said that, never play a fish on the spring of an automatic reel. Use the hand retrieve method to take the line in. When you want to wind the retrieved line onto the reel, then use the lever. The automatic reel was never intended to be a mechanical fish player.

Another point with automatics, always run the line between the fingers of your free hand. Pressing the lever without controlling the line this way will mean that there's a good chance you will run ALL the line onto the reel before you have a chance to release the lever. Resulting into the hook slamming into the tip of your rod, with the almost inevitable result of breaking something.

Line reeled onto the spool of a single action fly reel can form ridges high enough to jam against the cross braces of the reel frame. You can avoid these ridges by using your little finger on your non-winding hand as a level wind device. As the line comes in, simply push it to the right side of the spool, then hook it back to the left side. This will give you a smooth, level spool of line that won't jam your reel at the critical moment when playing a large fish.

So, we can see that an item that many of us take for granted is actually an integral part of the fishing process. As a final thought, always keep your reel(s) well maintained. This is especially important when fishing salt water, given it's highly corrosive properties. It doesn't take but a few minutes at the end of the day to clean, dry, and lightly oil your reel, and you will be repaid with many years of trouble free service. When using fixed spool spinning reels, give a thought to having a couple of spare spools in your tackle box, loaded with different breaking strain lines. This will give you more flexibility when you actually get to your fishing spot and see what type of conditions you are having to fish.

Fly Fishing for Bass, Choosing the Best Fly Rod For Bass

Bass are one of, if not the most popular fish in the Americas.  Not only are they incredible fighters, but at least one species of bass can be found in almost any body of water from Canada, throughout the U.S. and into South America.  Although not near as popular as bait casting and spin fishing, one of the best thrills in fishing is catching bass on a fly rod.  Before you can do this though, you will need a Bass Fly Fishing setup.  Here we will discuss the aspects that should be taken into account when choosing the best fly rod for bass, which is not as straight forward as it sounds!  Bass come in many different sizes, strengths and species, and require different techniques for different situations.  Let's take a look at these aspects and then you can go through the link at the end to my website where we will talk more about brands and models of fly rods for bass.

Size: what weight fly rod will be best for Bass?

Bass come in all different sizes that vary widely with respect to species.  The species not only determines size, but also strength.  For instance, a Small Mouth Bass has the ability to put up as much fight as some fish twice its size.  This needs to be taken in to account when choosing the best fly rod for Bass.  All bass start out small, but can grow to large sizes.  Therefore it is suggested that you go with a bass fly rod that is designed for the larger end of the spectrum.  You will not want to be weak in back bone when you need it.  Here is a generic list of species and the weights that are recommended for each.

•    Small Mouth Bass (0-8 lbs):                        6-7wt

•    Large Mouth Bass (0-10 lbs):                       7-8wt

•    Striper Bass, freshwater (5-15 lbs):               8-10wt

•    Stripers Bass, Saltwater (10-30 lbs):                10wt

•    Peacock Bass (3-20 lbs):                       8-10wt

•    Rainbow Bass (1-8 lbs):                           8wt

Rod Action: determines how a rod casts.

When fly fishing for Bass, typically you will be using heavy flies that will take some back bone to get out of the water and to get any distance.  A stiff, fast action fly rod will be able to best cast weighted flies, sink tips and wind catching poppers.  If you go with a rod that is too soft, you will be struggling to get the fly out of the water.

Fly Lines for Bass:

Bass can be fished with many different methods.  Different types of line will be needed to cover all tactics.  For instance, when using top water poppers, a floating line will be needed.  When using bait fish imitations, a sinking line will be the best to get the fly to the fish.  For this reason it is best to use a line that can be used for multiple situations, which is a line that has interchangeable tips: floating with multiple sink tips for different sink rates.  For more information on lines, follow the link at the end of this article.

Rod Quality:

Rod quality ranges widely.  With increases in quality, obviously price will increase.  There is a wide range in prices from the cheap Wal-Mart combo setup at to a high end 0 dollar rod.  There are two criteria I suggest everyone stick with for any rod for any fish.  Number 1: buy the highest quality rod you can afford.  Number 2: Make sure any rod you purchase comes with a lifetime warranty.  To get a rod with a lifetime warranty, you will need to spend at least 0.  It may sound like a lot, but it is worth it when you figure you will be making an investment to last a lifetime.  You have probably broken a rod or several in the past, and most likely it will happen again whether it be on a fish or your car door.  When choosing the best fly rod for bass, remember that you will be using hard to cast flies, so you the better the rod, the easier time you will have.  Those spendier rods do work hard and are worth it if you can fit one into your budget.

How to choose a fly rod

With an industry full of space age terms and space age claims how do you choose the right fly rod for your fishing needs? One that will provide a lifetime of pleasure and performance, but wont cost you a second mortgage.

Todays entry level graphite fly rods in the 0 - 0 range are as good as premium rods of just a generation ago. Like everything else advances in manufacturing and technology have provided the fishing rod manufacturer with new tools and techniques to produce a quality fly rod.

Lets face it most casting is done in streams of about 20’ - 30’ in the spring and less as the season gets along. Fly fishing expert Tom Morgan said, “ During the last forty years most trout have been taken from 20’ to 40’ and I expect the next 50 years will be the same.” Some fly fishing guides go as far as to advocate learning to cast and catch fish at 10’ to 15’.

So with this in mind long casts are not always necessary. Although a good presentation is.

If you are a beginner there are a bewildering number of terms relating to fly rods. Lets take a look at the ones that we will need to get us fly fishing.

Fly Rod Actions

Our choice of rod material will be graphite.

Fast - Tip flex: The top 1/3 of the fly rod flexes under line load. This rod loads very fast and requires quick timing and reflexes.

Medium - Mid flex: The upper ½ of the rod flexes under load. This action is slower and allows a more relaxed casting style. It is a good flex action for the beginner fly fisher. It is a more forgiving and less frustrating rod action to cast when starting out.

Slow - Full flex: This rod flexes from tip to butt. This action produces a slow recovery rate and a slow line speed. In my opinion this action doesn’t produce the power required for a hard hook set.

For our money a Mid flex graphite rod would be a good choice in terms of casting stroke, hook setting power and all around fishing performance.

Remember a good quality entry level rod can be purchased for 0 - 0 and we can assured that we are getting a decent fishing rod with many years of use. One we didn’t have to 2nd mortgage our house or use the kids college fund to purchase. Remember a good rod needs to come with a good warranty. So when you catch a car door it won’t hurt as much.

When we have decided on our type of fly rod we need to decide on our line weight and length of rod. If you are going to fish small streams 15’ across a shorter rod might be in order. But an average 8 ½ foot is about right for most of our fishing needs as length goes. As I think most of our fishing is in the 20 foot to 40 foot range casting range a 8 ½ foot rod gives us good leverage and casting power.

Line weight is somewhat determined by the fish we will be fishing for. But a good all-around weight forward floating 6wt is a good choice and one that you won’t go wrong with on most streams. A weight forward floating line will load our rod quickly and is good for flies from dries to terrestrials and into a moderate wind on our medium action rod.

For a balanced system we ill need a 6wt fly reel for our rod. A good reel can be bought for + after all its basic use is to hold the line. You as the fisher person do 99% of the work. Get a disk drag reel. Any good fly fishing book or store clerk can show you how to put backing and your line on your reel.

This rod will meet 90% of stream fishing needs.

Leaders for fly fishing

So we have decided on a 8 ½ 6wt medium action fly rod and a 6wt disk drag reel. With our 6wt line we are best suited to fish hook sizes 1/0 to 12s and with the correct leader we can push this to 16s and 18s

A good all purpose 9 foot knotless taper leader is our choice. The spring trout fishing here in the North East is a good time to use Blue-winged-olives in sizes 12 to 16 so a 4x leader is our choice. To this we can add a 12 inch 4x tippet and we are set. But remember we can fudge our numbers and use a 3x to 5x tippet to extend our fly sizes with no harm done.

How to fudge and rearrange our gear to suit our fishing is the essence of fly fishing. It is what will take us to the next level.

 Review of setup

So to review we have created a balanced fly fishing system of:

8 ½ foot 6wt medium action graphite fly rod

 6wt disk drag reel

9 foot knotless tapered 4x leader

4x tippet for hook size 10 - 14

This is our basic balanced system for trout fishing in most of the streams we will encounter. We can cast 20 feet to 40 feet with it. Fish fly size 10 - 14 with our tippet. And have a great day of fishing with it. With this outfit we can change-up our tippet and line type and extend our fishing range to meet our fishing needs. The essence of fly fishing is to be as changeable as the streams we fish.

Put your outfit together, tie a piece of yarn to the tippet and practice casting. There are more books and videos on the market about fly fishing then there are fish in all the streams.

Any good book will get you started casting and reading the stream. Take a lesson from a casting instructor. But get out there and fish.

Warranty

As with any purchase a lifetime warranty is a must. Never purchase a fly rod without one. I have caught 2 car doors with mine. Lets not forget the ever elusive ceiling fan. With a good warranty you can get your rod fixed with little or no cost to you.

Question by bubby420: How much is a vintage phillipson fly rod worth?
I have acquired, from my great-uncle, an 8'6" Phillipson Deluxe fly rod. It is fiberglass. I haven't found much info at all on this model. But it's to my understanding that it is among the first fiberglass fly rods created. I think this rod is from the 1950s It came right after the bamboo era. I always see other various phillipson fly rods listed on ebay selling for hundreds. Is anyone familiar with these Phillipson fly rods? I know they are very reputable.

Best Saltwater Fly Rod, What is the Best Fly Rod for Saltwater?

Choosing the "Best Saltwater Fly Rod" is like picking out the best eating utensil.  A different tool will be needed for different situations.  These situations vary widely so there is a wide range of saltwater fly rods that will be better at times than others.  Size of fish is the biggest variable, but there are others that you will want to take into account before you invest in a saltwater fly rod.  At the bottom of this article is a link that will take you to a site where you can get recommended brands and models of the best saltwater fly rods.

What is difference between a Saltwater Fly Rod and Freshwater Fly Rod?

Before you choose what will be the best saltwater fly rod for your adventures, it is good to know the differences between a saltwater fly rod and a freshwater (standard) fly rod.  First of all, both will work in either situation as long as it is designed for the size of fish you are after.  One thing that is for sure is that you do not want to be under rodded ever, especially when saltwater fly fishing.  Typically, pound for pound, saltwater fish fight much harder than freshwater fish.  I have caught 2 pound saltwater fish that fought as hard as a 10 pound Rainbow Trout.  So when in doubt, go with a heavier weight rod.

Fast Action

One critical factor when choosing a rod that will be best for saltwater is to makes sure it is a "Fast Action" rod.  Basically this means that the fly rod will be quite stiff and will therefore deliver a lot of power.  This will also mean a tired shoulder at the end of the day, but there are many reasons for fast action rods.  Here are a few:

Wind: saltwater fly rods are built to combat the wind that is almost always prevalent when fishing in saltwater.

Distance: Fast action rods will deliver the most power to the line resulting in a further cast than with softer rods.

Flies: In most saltwater fly fishing situations, you will not be casting small bugs to rising fish.  Usually you will be casting heavy, wind catching bait fish imitations that are hard to cast.  That is when a stiff, fast action rod will help you pick that fly up out of the water and then cast it out a long ways.  With a soft rod, you will struggle to get it out of the water without stripping in a bunch of line, and then try to cast it!

Line:  A common scenario when saltwater fly fishing is using sink tips to get the fly to the fish.  Sinking line is much harder to cast than floating, therefore the fast action.

You are probably thinking these aspects are what you would like in a freshwater rod.  And yes, most saltwater rods make great freshwater rods for big fish.  Unfortunately many freshwater rods are not designed for what you will be faced with in the saltwater.

Fish Size

The best saltwater fly rod is determined by the size of fish you are after.  As mentioned earlier, saltwater fish tend to fight with a vengeance.  Therefore it is wise to go with a heavier weight rod.  For the most part, an 8wt (weight) is probably about as low as you will go.  Here is a generic list of some fish and the rod weight you will want to have:

8wt: Sierra Mackerel, Bonefish, Snook, Trout, Steelhead

10wt: Bonefish, Permit, Roosterfish, Dorado, Snook, Redfish, Salmon

12wt: Roosterfish, Dorado, Barracuda, Tuna, Sailfish

14wt: Tarpon, Sailfish, Marlin, Shark

Quality

In order for a rod to be the best saltwater fly rod, it must be good quality.  Just as important though, it must fit into your budget.  As quality goes up, price is right in front of it.  There are two things that I suggest for all rods when it comes to quality and price:

Go with the best fly rod you can afford.
Stick with the rods that offer an unconditional lifetime warranty.  For the most part, you will have to spend at least 0 to get a rod with a lifetime warranty, but trust me, it is worth it.  We all break rods sooner than later, so you might as well make this an investment for a life time.  Plus, you will regret buying anything less the quality of rod that is warranted, especially when casting to fish in saltwater.  All the rod makers that I suggest are very good with their warranties, and some even offer programs where you have a new rod in as little as a few days after a break.

Fly Line for Saltwater

It is not really crucial to have a specific line made for saltwater, although you will want to be ready for all situations.  That is why I recommend a fly line with interchangeable tips.  This way you can adapt and fish floating line if need be, or switch to one of many sink tips designed to sink at different rates.  Follow the link below and click on "Fly Lines" to get my specific recommendation on certain brands.
