Fly Fishing with Egg Fishing Flies

Egg fishing flies are highly effective bait for trout and salmon during the fall when fish are swimming upstream and spawning. In fact, during this time of year, fresh eggs of their own kind make up a large portion of trout or salmon's diet. With so many fish swimming up stream during spawning season and so many nutritious eggs floating downstream, fly fishing with these can make for a bountiful trip.

A look under water:
While trout and salmon lay their eggs upstream in mostly-safe spawning beds, plenty of eggs are jarred loose and lost to the current. These loose eggs float downstream and into the waiting mouths of fish positioned downstream. The fish are naturally attracted to the eggs of their own species, which contain a rich variety essential nutrients and proteins.

The eggs of spawning fish, and consequently egg fishing flies, come in a variety of sizes and colors. Choose yellowish orange for Rainbow Trout, Steelhead, Coho Salmon, and Chinook. Bright orange quarter inch egg flies are better suited for Brown Trout. Be sure to also carry some white or off-white in your tackle box to mirror the color of the many unfertilized eggs that don't take on a color.

Casting:
Since eggs have no movement of their own, they must be cast for dead drifting downstream. Egg fishing flies should be cast far enough upstream from your target that the fly has time to settle on the bottom. Since these fishing flies are bottom drifters, they are prone to catching and sticking on plants and rocks on the river bottom, so be sure to pack lots of extra fishing flies.

The bright color of these fishing flies aid in the detection of a bite when the water is somewhat clear. In murky or deep waters, a strike indicator is necessary to determine a take. When using an indicator, you'll need to watch very carefully and strike just when fish subtly suck in the egg fishing flies.

Tackle and Line:
When fishing with egg flies, just about any standard rod or reel will do. An 8.5 to 9 foot rod and floating line is ideal for most waters while heavier rods can be used when facing big, hard-fighting fish. For maximum effectiveness, it's important for egg fishing flies to sink rapidly. In thick or fast moving waters, applying a little dish soap to the line can help the egg to slide to the bottom quickly.

The ideal time for fishing with egg fishing flies is right around the corner. The months of August through December are when salmon and trout are laying their eggs in the cool waters. So while you may employ your bug fishing fly for the majority of the year, the fall and winter months give you the opportunity to add a new weapon to your arsenal.

Flies For Fly Fishing

What kind of flies should I be fishing with on the Missouri River west of Great Falls, MT?

Not sure what kind of flies I should use for fly fishing this time of year. I went to today with no success.

Are you fishing the farmlands, say from Casdade to Great Falls?

Or are you up in the Holter Dam to Cascade area?

If you are down in the farm lands, I have never fished there.

Holter Dam to Cascade, that is a different story.

Nymphing is really great this time of year.

Dry fly when you see the hatches coming off.

The Missouri River fishes mostly really small flies, far smaller than many other Montana rivers.

In the past I have had great luck with the following nymphs fished 3 to 5 feet under a strike indicator:
Bead Head Hare's Ear with flash; BH Gold Ribbed Hare's Ear; BH Copper John; BH Lightening Bug; BH Pheasant Tail and Pheasant Tail with flash; Brassie. All of these fished right off the bottom.

For dries the Elk Hair Caddis in tan or brown is a good one as is the Adams or Parachute Adams.

All of these are small, nothing over size 16. The fish really key in on the smaller flies.

In some of the deeper holes you could do some streamers going deep after the Browns.

I looked up the following info from my copy of Flyfisher's Guide to Montana.

Midges come off year round on the Missouri. Good flies would be the Griffith's Gnat 18-24; Adams 16-24; Palomino Midge 16-24; Serendipity 16-24.

The Pale Morning Duns should be starting up really soon if not already. Flies like a PMD Crippel 16-22; Sparkle Dun 16-22; Rusty Spinner 16-22; CDC Transitional Dun 18-22; Hare's EAr Nymph 16-20; Pheasant Tail Nymph 16-20.

The Caddis should be coming off by now and flies like the Black Caddis Pupa 16-18; X-Caddis 16-18; Emergent Sparkle Pupa 16-18; Hemingway Caddis 16-18; Tan Caddis 16-18; Elk Hair Caddis 16-18; Soft Hackle 14-18.

i need the top five flys for south america??? i do alot of fly fishing in north america, but need them for south! thank you all very much!
are south and north america flies pretty similar/?? because those given are very popular north american flies....

You will get a variety of answers mainly because of where people fish and what they are fishing for and also personal opinion.

For dries I would have to say the top dry is the Adams and then possibly the Royal Wulff and possibly the Blue Wing Olive.

For streamers, the best bet is the Woolly Bugger in black or olive or brown or many other color choices.

For nymphs there are a lot of choices, but possibly the Pheasant Tail, Hares Ear and the San Juan Worm.

But then that is only my opinion.

I have been really curious about this sport for some time now. I've seen it done countless of times.

Tried it. Failed.

People have endlessly and tirelessly, with their utmost patience and understanding tried to rub off some fly fishing skills on me - but to no avail.

I have resorted to reading, for now. I decided that whatever I can't do, I might as well LEARN - even just in theory. It helps. I think of my self right now as "A work in progress".

Let's all learn the basics. DEFINITION OF TERMS!
A brief definition about some terms I need to know about fly fishing.

What is Fly Fishing?
Fly fishing is an ancient and distinct angling method, developed primarily for salmonids (trout and salmon, mostly) and now extended to other species such as pike, bass, and carp, as well as a wide range of salt water species.

Fly casting is gripping or holding a fly rod correctly and to adopt the correct stance to maintain comfort and balance. The most basic rule to casting is based on the way a clock looks. Your head points straight up to 12:00, your cast (the tip of your rod) should go back to 10:00 and then forward to 2:00, releasing your line at the end of the forward motion. It is a common mistake to dip the rod below those two positions and almost always ends in a line tangle!

Angler. (Does that have anything to do with Math? I hate Math!)
That would be YOU silly! Someday, IF you learn how to fly fish, you will be called an angler. A person catching fish or shellfish with no intent to sell, this includes people keeping the catch or people that practice the "Catch and Release" method (highly recommended).

The Essentials - If you don't have a complete list of these, you're NOT Fly Fishing!

Fly Fishing rods are long, thin, flexible rods sometimes made of bamboo, but more recently from man-made materials. Fly rods tend to have large diameter eyes (or guides) spaced along the rod to help control the movement of relatively thick fly line. To aid in the freedom of movement required to skillfully cast with a fly rod, there is usually little to no butt (handle) extending below the fishing reel. Although fly rods are mainly used for casting from fixed positions, they can also be used for trolling for fish.

Fishing Reel is a device used for the deployment and retrieval of fishing line using a spool mounted on an axle. They are used in conjunction with the fly rod and are attached to the base or handle of the rod.

Fishing line is any cord made for fishing. Important parameters of a fishing line are its length, material, and weight (thicker, sturdier lines are more visible to fish). The refractive index is also important—lines with a refractive index similar to water are almost invisible to fish. The most important parameter in deciding what line to use is its strength. This is the amount of weight the line can hold before snapping. One must balance the trade-off between strength and visibility.

Flies as Bait? Are you kidding?
Flies or Artificial flies are constructed — "tied" onto a hook with thread, fur, feathers and other materials — in sizes and colors to match naturally occurring food or simply to excite a fish. And to add more confusion, the names of flies: Wet and dry flies, nymphs, scuds, eggs, streamers, steelheads, bass flies, salmon flies,and saltwater flies.

You will be considered a well equipped fly fisher if you bring waders, wading boots, vest net, polarized sunglasses to protect your eyes and see through the reflection on the water, a hat for the harsh sun, sun block and bug dope (bug repellant) - if you don't want to be eaten alive by bugs before you even catch a fish!

Armed with the stuff I read, I went about to experience Fly Fishing without even going near a body of water.

That's a good set up, firstly ensure that the reel fits the reel seat on the rod tightly and correctly, for line you should use Grey's GRXI, its at a reasonable price in the UK and is of high quality, the line is the most important thing, so don't buy the cheapest you can find you can get it here

You can get this exact same line for cheaper from an on-line company called the fisherman's tackle company, just search for it and find the line. For the line you buy i suggest you buy a floating and a intermediate line, the intermediate will help you reach fish feeding closer to the bottom. Go with the line from FMTC because you will get a free braided loop to which you can attach your tippet then your fly. You also get free backing from the fisherman's tackle company, this saves you allot since you're just starting out

Can anyone give me a personal review of this outfit?

I hate to say this, but it isn't a good rod to start with, you likely will find casting hard due to its quality, it took, some finding, as I'm not familiar with that combo, is this the combo you were looking into buying

Best Winter Fly Fishing: A Guide To Locations And Fishing Flies

This winter, when everyone else is headed for cover in their homes, the adventurous fly fisherman is headed out into the crisp rushing waters to take advantage of some of the most exciting fly fishing of the year. If you're the type who doesn't let winter get between you and fishing, then pack your tackle box with an assortment of fishing flies and try out one of these choice winter locations.

Whistler, Canada:
Get your recipes out for wild steelhead, salmon, rainbow trout, and char, because that's what you'll be coming home with after a fly fishing trip to Whistler, Canada. Temperatures here in the winter months range between 35 degrees and 46 degrees Fahrenheit so pack your thermals! As for packing your tackle box, some good bets for fishing flies are green highlander, the Green Butt Skunk, and the Thunder and Lightning.

Eureka, California:
Needs something a little warmer? Winter temperatures in Eureka rarely dip below 45 degrees. Taupo Region, New Zealand:
If you're going to take a fishing trip during the winter, you may as well go big! New Zealand is an outdoor lover's paradise, with some of the most amazing scenery anywhere in the world. Wintertime fishing in New Zealand is best in the Taupo region. This area is believe to be where the largest number of rainbow trouts in the world spawn. For fishing flies, you'll want to pack lots of nymphs, particularly pheasant tail nymph, hare and copper nymph, and various forms of caddis.

Sure, it's cold and there are fewer hatches and therefore fewer fish in the winter. But those that are there are out are practically begging to take hold of a juicy-looking fishing fly. So start dreaming, find your ideal spot, load up on fishing flies and set out on an adventure to break up those long winter months. If nothing else, you'll come back with some great fishing stories.
