Largemouth Bass fishing with a fly rod

So you want to go Largemouth Bass fishing with a fly rod. Well put away those trout flies 10 to - whatever. This isn't spring sipping. No afternoon sunlit hatches. Little Baetis (Blue wing olive) or Heptageniidae (Light Cahill) match the hatch with 14s - 22s.

We'll be throwing size 2 black deer hair mouse patterns, flashing a hen and peacock tail . Splashing down like an Apollo space capsule. Looking like dinner for a week.

In my Bass years I have found that when top water fishing "Bass like big meals" Although Bass generally hunt by sight they are aided by a unique ability to feel small vibrations through their "lateral line" a sense organ that runs just under their skin down each side of their body.

When fishing a mouse I want this organ to vibrate like my cell phone. Then the Bass will take a look around and see the meal just sitting there looking tasty.

Bass are not timid little fish. I've caught little ones no bigger than the mouse almost. Every time I do I tell it "go tell dad your mad".

The point is be ready. a lot of the time the mouse barely hits the water and "bam" you've got a fight. But when this doesn't happen let the mouse sit there for a moment. Stunned, "what happened", "gotta get to land", "I'm in the wrong place at the wrong time". Short jerks enough to put the water in motion then sit. I call it "jerk, motion and sit".

This is a big fly and I don't mind a splash down, but I want a less noisy lift off. So when picking up, lift your rod tip high and get some line off the water. Slowly pull back your rod then life the fly out with a quick back motion. Its a technique but it will allow you to make a quieter exit.

Some of the patterns I use for spring Bassing:

Hook size/Pattern

2 Mouse, black or purple
2-6 Dahlberg strip diver, chartreuse
2-6 Near nuff frog
2-6 Sheep/rabbit streamer
2-6 Bumble bee popper
6 Peacock woolly bugger
2-6 Electric leech
6 Fruit cocktail

2-6 Mickey Finn

There are dozens of patterns. These are the ones that work for me in the North East. But I think they would work almost anywhere.

To get these flies out there you will need to know what kind of water you will be fishing. For Largemouth Bass fishing on medium sized lake or pond. You will want to use 8 foot to 9 foot medium action to fast action fly rod. A 6wt or 7wt will do the trick. These rods will have the power necessary to throw and lift a large fly. Remember will are throwing flies the size of motor homes.

Your fly line should be a matched 6/7 weight, floating, and weight forward. Forget about Bass tapers for now.

For a leader you want 9 foot knotless taper 1x. When you get your leader. Tie on a piece of 1x tippet about 15 inches long to your leader. The added length will give something to tie your fly to without shorting your leader each time you change flies. This also protects your leader because it’s the last 12 - 18 inches of leader that takes the most abuse.

For a sinking fly use a 6 foot knotless sinking leader with a 1x tippet. Same deal tie on a piece of 12 inch 1x tippet as well.

With the 1x tippet you are fishing at about 12 pound test and you can fish size 2 - 6 with it. You can also ties on 2x - 3x this will extend your fly size range 2 - 12. A good rule of thumb for tippet size to hook size is divide the hook size by 3 and that’s the tippet size to use. So take a hook size 12 divide by 3 and get 4 so 4x is about right for this fly. Take it with a grain of salt and use experience and judgment.

Also remember a knot weakens the line strength and decreases the pound test of the line.

This is a basic setup and will get you started on top water Largemouth Bass fishing.

Simms Fly Fishing Gear: Taking Fishing Gears At Its Best

Simms fly fishing gears are some of the most respected fishing gears in the world today. Most fishing enthusiasts around the world would attest to the fact that Simms fly fishing gears are some of the best in the industry. Most fly fishing gear reviews hail the Simms fly fishing gear for its good quality and durability. No wonder that the company has been known as one of the industry leaders since its inception in the early part of 1980.

How the Company Started

Like most well known companies, the makings of Simms fly fishing gears started from humble beginnings. It first started business in the Eastern Sierra on California. John Simms, the founder of the company was a respected fishing guide and outfitter before he ventured into manufacturing fishing gears.

The decisions to create a company to manufacture fishing gears came when John realized that most of his clients are in need of good quality gears. As a fisherman who understands the needs of his clients, John knows that good fishermen should have the best fishing gears if they want to enjoy fishing expeditions. With this in mind, he started to create fishing gears that suits the needs of his clients.

The first Simms fly fishing gears were met with a lot of enthusiasm by many of John's clients that he thought of creating a new company, expanding his product line and create distribution channels to sell his products. Unfortunately, he did not have enough capital to get his project off the ground so it took a couple more years before the Simms fly fishing gears become readily available in the market.

Like most new products in the market, the Simms fly fishing gears did not become an overnight success. The company did not take shape until the mid 1980's when it came up with neoprene waders which because a market success. Following the success of the neoprene wader, the Simms fly fishing gear brand became popular. This prompted the company to come up with more products under its brand.

By the early part of the 90's, the company has created a long line of Simms fly fishing products which attracted investors to the company. In 1993, K.C. Walsh acquires Simms and transferred its business office to Bozeman, MT. From its humble beginnings, the company had grown into a multi-million dollar conglomerate. It has extended its business operations to many parts of the world and is now known as one of the leaders in the fly fishing gear industry.

Proposed bill aims to outlaw felt-soled fishing boots
A bill proposed to the Montana Legislature outlaws the use of fishing boots that use felt soles. Those in favor of the bill say the felt soles are spreading invasive pests across Montana waters. But for others, the prohibition goes too far.

Selecting the Best Fly Fishing Gear for Your Needs

Having a new sport or hobby is sure to fire up your buying impulses.  However, before you run out to the local fly fishing gear store, there are a few things to consider.  Since fly fishing entails a lot of time standing right in the water where you are going to fish, wearing your good old dependable jeans won’t cut it and neither will an ordinary rod and reel.  The typical fishing pole won’t allow you to equip the fly used in fly fishing so, choosing the right one is essential.  A trip to the local hobby shop will allow you to purchase the correct fly fishing gear that will guarantee you fun and enjoyable excursions.

Vests and Waders

One of the most essential fly fishing gear is the vest and waders.  There are waders which come with boots and there are waders which some call “stocking feet”, meaning, you will have to purchase your boots separately.  You have to remember that your waders have to be roomy enough to have space for thermal underway or extra socks during the cold weather.  They have to be comfortable and have room for you to move around so make sure that they are big enough.  Your vest or jacket also has to be comfortable enough for any weather condition.  The best vests have zip out liners which you can adjust according to weather.  Your get up is as important as any other part of your fly fishing gear because if you are too hot or too cold then chances are fly fishing won’t be fun and enjoyable for you.

A Fly-Fishing Rod

Probably the most important fly fishing gear is your rod.  The right rod is crucial and some models do not have reels attached to them.  This is because some anglers prefer to change rods depending on water conditions and the size of the lake or stream they are fishing in.  You can also buy a separate rod without reels and a separate reel and save yourself some cash.  However, think of your rod as an investment and the most important piece of fly fishing gear you will need and get yourself a sturdy one.   A good rod will enable you to enjoy your fly fishing hobby for years to come,

A Net to Finish of Reeling in Your Catch

A net is also vital when it comes to your fly fishing gear.  A net is essential when there are only a few feet left when reeling in your catch; this is where anglers commonly lose a fish.  When the line is slack you will need to get that fish in the net as soon as possible lest the line snap or the fish yank out the hook from the line.  Nets included in a fly fishing gear are usually smaller than your typical net.  This is because fly fishermen like to keep them attached to their vest or waders with a D-clip or hook.  Newer models of nets have magnets which you can easily snap in place and have them handy whenever you need it.

When shopping for your fly fishing gear, take your time, ask the retail assistant, ask your friends, and you will make the right decision.

Happy Fishing,

John

Fly Fishing Tackle ? What is It?

Fly fishing is a specific type of fishing and therefore requires a specific type of tackle. But to those who are new to fishing may ask "what is it?" and what is the difference between them? The general idea of the difference is that different fish can be caught because of the different tools used. The most common associated fish caught with fly fishing tackles is trout and salmon, however pike, bass and carp are being caught as well. This article will help you understand what fly fishing is and the different attributes involved.

The basic apparatus in fly fishing is the fly rod, fly line and artificial fly line and fly reel. Each part of the tackle is vital in its own way in catching fish. The fly rod is used to cast the fly line. Depending on the type of fish caught and the environment being fished the lengths will vary between 7 to 10 feet. Normally the fly rod will be made from fibreglass and graphite and in some cases bamboo. By using different materials, the rods are lighter, heavier, stiff or bendy. Again fly rods are made from materials that suit the intended purpose.

The fly line part of the fly fishing tackle is a plastic coated line that can be found in many different floating and sinking styles in a variety of thicknesses. They range from colour to colour in many cases are bright in order to attract the prey intended to be caught.

A major part to fly fishing tackle is the artificial flies. They are made by tying hair, feathers, fur and other natural and synthetic materials onto a hook. In the past natural flies were used however, in today's fishing tackle synthetics are proven to be much more popular. Depending on the type of fishing being caught and the environment in which you fish different flies are needed. Artificial flies range from bright vibrant colours in order to stand out, or darker colours to match the environment.

The fly reel is an important attribute when one looks at fly fishing tackle. The reel is used to hold the fly fishing line. The reel is the fundamental attribute when one considers fly fishing. Depending on the fish caught depends entirely on the reel used. For bigger fish the reel becomes more of a necessity where gears and thicker line is needed. Whist for smaller fish a manual reel can be used.

So far you can now see the apparatus needed to carry out and as you can see if will add up to a small investment. This is why shopping online for your fly fishing tackle will financially better. I have found many websites that offer a wider selection at a lower price when compared to high street stores.

From this short article it is clear to see that fly fishing tackle consists of a fly rod, fly line and artificial flies and finally a fly reel. They are all designed and work in cohesion to catch certain fish you will not be able to with a normal rod, which is why fly fishing has that edge you cannot get in normal fishing circumstances.

The History of Fly Fishing

No one really knows when fly fishing first began. It is believed that it existed long ago in ancient times. One of the earliest written references to fly fishing was made by Claudius Aelianus. In 200 AD he wrote of people that were fishing in a river with a hand made fly. He described how they attached red wool and feathers to a hook. The rods they used and the sting attached were each about six feet long. These people were the ancient Macedonians. Throughout history from Aelianus to the present people have been writing about fly fishing, and many thousands of others have been enjoying the sport.

The Princess of Soapwell, English, was an avid fly fisherman. Her name was Dame Juliana Berners and she was a master at her sport. At the time Columbus was searching for the New World, Dame Juliana was publishing an extensive treatise on the art of fly fishing. In her treatise she described the twelve styles of fly and included extensive instructions on how to tie them. She patterns were put into categories by the month that they were used most often.

She also described the rod that was used for fly fishing during that time. It measured about 18 feet long and was very flexible, The rods were made of several different types of wood which added to their flexibility. Their lines were short, by today's standards, and were made of hand braided horse hair. The general rule of the time was that the line should not be longer then the fishing rod. The line was tied to the tip of the pole.

Many fly fishermen of today have used her patterns for the fly. They say they are just as effective today as they were more than five hundred years ago. Several of the more popular patterns include the Black Gnat, the Wooly Worm, the Stonefly and the Whirling Dun.

In the mid 1600's Isaak Walton published his book "Compleat Angler." Throughout history from then on, Izaak Walton has been considered the patron saint on angling, and of fly fishing in particular. In truth, it was actually his friend, Charles Cotton, that had contributed the portion of the book that pertained to fly fishing. The flies and rods described in this book were very similar to those described by Dame Juliana. However, the lines described were slightly different. They were still made of horsehair but were about six feet longer then those of the 1400's. The main difference was that some of the lines were tapered. It is believed that this was the first time tapered lines were described in writing.

In the early 1800's, fishing line makers began mixing silk in with the horsehair. By the time of the Civil War the first all silk lines were made. They were coated with an oily coating which made them water resistant. Horsehair lines were almost never used after that. Occasionally they were found in England up to World War II.

The first nylon line was made in 1948 and from that point forward synthetic materials have been used by most people for fly fishing. In 1952, a technology was created that made an automatically tapered line withe extreme precision.

Best thing I can tell you is find riffles and large rocks that have a eddy on the down stream side. Cast to the top of the riffle and let the current take you nymph into the eddy. Might help you to have a strike indicator on your line as well.

Czech Nymphing - Fly Fishing Flies Selection

Czech Nymph Fly Selection

There is one essential thing that the fly fisherman will need when czech nymphing, that is heavy flies! Usually using a team of 3 flies on droppers with the point fly being the heaviest fly.

Cased Caddis - The Prey

Caddis Flies are widespread across Europe wherever water is available, either static or running. However, the adult is a strong flyer and can move some distance from ponds, streams and rivers, especially as it is attracted to light.  However it is the larvae form that is a key part of the diet for fish such as trout. The larvae which make a "case" in which to live using small stones, sand, pieces of leaves and all glued together with a silk lining inside. The silk is spun with a secretion from labial glands (around the mouth) like moth larvae. When full-grown the larva pupates in the case which stops being mobile and may be glued down to a rock.

The cased forms feed on vegetation whilst the caseless forms tend to be either carnivorous or detritivores. The predatory ones are those free living. The web-spinning, caseless larvae may create a silk tube in which to live whilst those in moving water spin the web between stones. This web may trap small invertebrates drifting with the current. This invertebrate drift, as it is known, is an abundant source of food as the current constantly dislodges animals living on the bottom of streams and rivers. Many of these caseless caddis larvae are associated with particular speeds of flow. However, much of what they catch will just be drifting detritus and other organic particulate matter on which the larva will feed (hence detritivore). Some particulate matter will be drifting plankton. Those larvae in especially fast flowing water, e.g. Hydropsyche, will have toughened upper parts to the thoracic segments (thickened external skeleton is refered to as being sclerotised). The larvae have their abdomens safely in the silk tube but the front section of the body protruding into the current. This sclerotisation may be an adaptation to protect them from small stones and other material hitting them.

It is this caddis that is one of our primary fishing imitations when czech nymphing. Below are different imitations that can be used in descending weight order, with the heavyweights of the czech nymphing world described first.

Czech Bottle Fly - Super Heavyweight Flies

Czech bottle nymphs are the "bruisers" of the fly fishing world. Designed to hold botom in the fastest of waters a czech bottle nymph is a uniquely designed fishing fly.  The Bottle Fly is a complete fly, designed in the shape of a bottle and is available in 2.2gm, 3.4gm, 4.4gm and even 5.5gm weights. The fly is manufactured from pre-made moulds which are tied very simply, the bottle is rolled in glue and sand is rolled onto the fly, a hackle is then simply tied to the front. The finished fly is identical to a caddis in its nest described above. The beauty of this fly being that it will hold bottom or take a team of flies to the bottom of the fastest of rivers. We use this for sea trout frequently as it can be used to hold a snake fly low in the fastest of waters!

Traditional Czech Nymphs - Heavy Flies

These are the more "traditional" czech nymphs used around the world. These are still a heavy fly, often tungsten weighted to keep the fly low in the water.  Czech nymphs are available in a range of colours, from pea green to cream and red, from hares ear and amber to sparkle and orange. They key with these colours is actually that the czech nymphing technique is forcing the trout to make a rapid decision, fast water with stimulating colours is often deadly.

A technique I frequently use is to use a heavy fly, often a bottle fly on the point with a natural colours czech nymph on one dropper and a nymphs with colours on the second dropper. Using this technique you can see what the trout are eating before focussing on specific colours.

Goldhead / Beadhead Flies

These are the "lightweight flies" used in czech nymphing. The Goldhead or Beadhead fly has a small bead which gives it weight, ideal in slower rivers when czech nymphing and frequently used as an alternative dropper.

Standard Nymphs

Do not forget to truly work a team of droppers, there is nothing to stop the fly fisherman using a standard caddis, nymph, stonefly or other fly on a dropper when czech nymhing, the key is that it needs to be kept low and close to the river bottom.
