Fly Fishing Equipment - The Basics For the Beginner

"What fly fishing equipment should I get?" I'm often asked that question by folk who are interested in learning how to fly fish. Sometimes, it seems so complicated. "Is it expensive?" is the second most often asked question.

Let's start with the second question first. While you can spend thousands of dollars on gear, you don't need to nor should you spend more than a couple of hundred dollars if you're just starting out. Depending on what conditions you will be fishing, you might even get away with less than that, too. I recommend that you speak with casting instructor who knows your area and what conditions you'll be fishing in at first. That person will be able to put you on the right track as to the specifics of what gear you should have.

To answer the question about what fly fishing equipment you'll need to get started, here are the basics. You can of course purchase much more, but why not wait before spending lots of money to find out if you'll enjoy the sport in the first place?

A fly rod A reel that will hold the line Line (usually a floating line will do fine if you're targeting small to medium size rivers) 8 lb. test monofilament that you will use for leader material Flies Clippers Sunglasses

Optional equipment when you are starting out:

Waders to keep you dry if fishing rivers A vest or bag to carry gear (and perhaps your lunch and a flask filled with something to drink if you are so inclined) Landing Net

And that's about it. The conditions you will fish will dictate the length of your rod as well as the weight of the line you will be casting. Most beginners can get away with selecting a rod in the 8 to 9 foot range and 5-6 line weight (wt.). Unless you will be after big fish, you can get by with a very inexpensive fly reel. All it does in most cases is hold the line for you. In many situations where the target fish are trout, you likely wont even need to use the drag on your reel. In most cases, tension is applied to the line with your hand.

Although many fly anglers have all sorts of systems for determining the correct leader thickness and taper, don't worry about that for now. Because the lure in fly fishing are very light weight, you are using the weight of the fly line and the ability of the rod to power the line forward when you cast your fly. Therefore, fly line is much thicker than the monofilament used in spinning or baitcast fishing. That's where the monofilament or leader comes in - it is tied to the end of the fly line, generally an 8 foot length is fine, and to the other end of the leader, you will tie your fly.

Although it is fun to tie your own flies, at this point it is probably best to obtain some from someone you know that ties up flies, or purchase them for a shop that sells them. If it is a local shop, they will be able to advise you as to what patterns that will be most likely to entice the fish to hit. At first, stick with nymphs or wet flies. Dry fly fishing can be a lot of fun, but I'd recommend learning to cast and catch fish with a fly rod using nymphs.

Sunglasses are a must when fly fishing! The last thing you want to do is damage your eye with a misplaced cast and a fly stuck in your eyeball. Think safety first, no matter what you are doing. If you have decided to also purchase a pair of waders, make sure you are familiar with the water you will be wading in.

There are a number of resources available to you to help you decide what fly fishing gear is best for you. Read reviews of the gear that is available to you, talk to other fly anglers, and perhaps the best advice of all: Hire a fly fishing instructor for at least a half day. This will help prevent you from forming bad habits that will be difficult to break later on.

Fly-fishing, a fun sport

Fly-fishing is an ancient angling method especially effective in catching trout and salmon. This distinct method of angling uses artificial flies to lure or excite fish. Fly-fishing helps anglers catch the fish easier than the traditional way.

There are two basic forms of fly-fishing, dry flies and wet flies.

Dry flies need coating with floatant in order for it to sit in the surface of the water. Dry flies are mostly effective in upstream and moving water. Dry flies help anglers' spot where fish resides like pools and pocket in streams. Thus, it is easier to detect them and catch the fish.

The use of wet flies is beneath the surface of the water. Wet flies are nymphs, lures and true wet flies. It works as effective as dry flies except that in cases where weeds are many and almost touching the surface, wet flies blends with the weeds and thus may not be as effective as the dry flies.

Fly-fishing was developed in the 19th century, dry fly technique is very effective especially for slower and clearer rivers.

This is because weeds in rich rivers tend to grow closer to the surface, thus traditional wet fly fishing is almost ineffective. Dry fly fishing is thus useful by keeping the fly and the line floating on the surface. This makes fish excited and aggressive; the angler can then spot the location of the fish and in turn catches fish easier.

Later developments of fly-fishing made this concept as basis, thus in the latter part of the 19th century, anglers develop love for fly-fishing. This gave birth to fly-fishing, the sport among its aficionados.

Various parts of the United States host fly-fishing sports such as in the waters of Catskill Mountains of New York and the provinces of Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, British Columbia, Alberta and California.

Anglers in North America also develop various literatures pertaining to fly-fishing. The sport of fly-fishing and all these literatures gave North America the reputation of being the birthplace of dry fly-fishing, specifically the City of Calgary, Alberta. It is arguably one of the world's best trout rivers, thus it remains to be the epicenter for the Western Fly Fishing in North America.

Various other states in America keeps the growing number of fly-fishers such as Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and Arkansas. The growing number of anglers that are drawn to the sport of fly-fishing keeps the popularity at its peak.

Dry or wet fly-fishing, whichever is more effective in the rivers where you fish will help keep the sport exciting. It may not be long that other countries will learn to love the sport and make it a globally loved sport.

How does fly-fishing work?

Fly fishing uses longer and lighter rods; sizes vary from 2m (6 ft) for fresh water and up to 4m (14 ft) for salt water fly-fishing. Weight for fresh water rods are between two to five ounces.

Popular types of casts in fly-fishing follow its variety in situation specifics. Anglers uses common cast when the angler whisks the fly rod forward and back using his forearm and upper arm, the wrist is used to soften the motion.

The rod movement varies from 10 o'clock position to 2 o'clock position without touching the ground. Anglers do this to load the rod tip with energy and to travel the fly line creating distance and control; they call this motion false casting.

False casting needs to be done to excite the fish or make it aggressive enough so that when the fly touches the surface, it will be sure that the area where the fly touches is where most of the fish are located and thus will be easier to spot and catch them.

Learning the skill of fly fishing is no easy sport for every angler. It involves angle precision in order to achieve the target position of the artificial flies. Fly fishing is almost a game for many because interested anglers are challenged to catch many different fish species with use of the fly rod by imitating insects to lure the fishes. The success of fly fishing depends on many factors and one factor is the fly fishing lure. Imitating insects are done by attaching lures or flies into the fly line to be thrown to the water. This imitation of flies can lure the fishes and eventually trap them and catch them.

There are different types of fly fishing lures or flies and each are listed below

Wet fly This type of lure imitates aquatic insects below the water surface. Meaning this type of lure design are the patterned after drowned insects.

Streamer Lures

This is a type of lure that is a form of wet fly lure. This type is designed to imitate small fishes that are being eaten by large fishes.

Dry Fly

Surface Lures

This are also called bass poppers. This type of lured design imitates frogs or mice. They are made from bright colors that are attractive to large fishes such as Northern Pike or Bass especially when they cause commotion due to water movement.

Lures or Flies may be bought in the market or can be self-made. Making flies or lures is a skill and many anglers are learning to make their own lure instead of buying in the market. They are up for the challenge of making the difficult yet best flies to lure the fish close and eventually fall trap to it. Lures may be made from feather, fur or light cloth and tied together with a tie specially made for making fly fishing flies. There are many books or videos providing step by step procedure in making the lures. One just has to follow them properly in order to make the best lure to catch fishes.

Fly fishing for trout is the most popular form of fly fishing. Most fly fishing techniques were developed for fly fishing for trout.

Approximately 90% of the trout feed on the bottom of a river/stream or lake; and only come to the surface when there is something large enough to eat. During the summer months, anglers should always be prepared with the right flies to match any circumstance.

Dry Fly Fishing is done with the line and flies that float, using a tapered leader, which is placed between the fly at the end of the leader next to the line. Even though most of the trout feed on the bottom, the number of trout that come to the surface is still enough to keep most anglers very busy. This type of Fly Fishing is considered to be the purest form of fishing.

In some situations anglers wade into the water to fish giving them a better chance. During these months nymph fishing may be more productive. The inactivity of surface insects is less, sending the trout to go deeper to find food. Therefore, nymph flies can be weight at the leader.

When river fishing, trout tend to face upstream in order to watch for food as it gets washed downstream. They tend to stay under trees when there by the bank. When fishing a river start upstream moving very slowly; allowing the fly to drift down stream for a couple of casts. Trout usually shelter behind underwater features out of the current waiting for food.

In cooler water, trout tend to bunch together and may be lured to bite on a streamer fly. Anglers should use a technique of casting out and slowly moving the line from left to right, back and forth to give the fly a more enticing action.

Trout not only like to stay around rocks; they also like weed beds and drop-offs. If the angler should see anything such as these, they should cast ahead of the trout and slowly pull the fly back into the trout's area.

Fly Fishing for trout, is different from cast fishing, where the line on the cast rod is usually already tight; with fly rods there is always some extra line between the index finger, the thumb, and the reel.

So the angler is actually catching the trout while holding the line in their hands, until the trout hits the fly and the angler pulls on the line with the hand that is holding the extra line, to sink the fly hook, at the same time letting the extra line go.

Fishing is meant to be a relaxing day spent on the river trying to hook the one your buddies will envy. As a first time fisher the tricks of the hobby can seem a bit overwhelming. Knowing the best tools to use is just as important as where the best fishing spot is. The equipment can get expensive if you rush out and buy everything fishing related. A good fly fishing tip to remember is fly fishing means just that, using the perfect flies as well as the correct rod and reel to hook the big one.

There are numerous videos and television shows to view that will teach you tricks and tips of the experts. If you cannot seem to get the hang of the perfect technique spend the day watching the pros or make a visit to the library for a book with detailed information.

The artificial flies are used to attract the fish and come in different varieties. These colorful little fish catchers are colorful and created to mimic insects that fish eat. The fly is basically designed in two different types. The dry and the submerged. A dry fly is designed to float on the surface tricking the fish into thinking it has recently landed. A submerged style is heavy enough to go beneath the water to look like drowned insects or aquatic insects in there early stages.

If you have intentions of spending many years at the local water source the rod you choose should be one that is made to last. This requires spending time in the sports department. Do not grab the first rod that gets your attention, it is important to hold it and get a feel for the weight and length. They vary in price from a few dollars to a weeks pay, so the rod you opt for should be within your budget and one you are comfortable holding.

Second in line for importance is the reel. If you purchase your fishing equipment at a department store, some rods and reels are pared up and packaged as a set. This is fine if you only intend to use the equipment a couple of times. For long term dependable equipment, you should choose them separately. Most combination packaged items are not made for long term use which is why the price is significantly lower than purchasing top quality brands separately.

The purpose of the reel is to hold the fishing line and will vary in its ability to avoid tangling of line and quickness for pulling in the fish. A smooth drag reel system is the perfect choice for catching salmon or large trout. An arbor reel will give you the availability of reeling in a larger amount of line with each turn. The more line you can reel the easier it is to pull them in without a long fight with the fish. If you can find a reel compatible to interchangeable spools this will allow you to switch lines without switching reels.

Now that you have chosen the rod and reel of your dreams it is time to get the fishing line. The line will play a large part in how you cast as well as how you reel in. The line should be heavy enough to cast smooth and reel in with snapping. Choosing a light weight is not the best to use for a good cast. It can droop, snap and be more difficult to reel than the heavier line.

One final fly fishing tip is how to cast. Your casting style will become an important part of catching or not catching. While casting out it should be a straight shot, do not jerk and keep it as smooth as possible. For practice before going to the river, make a target on a flat surface in a large area and continue casting until you have your body and line relaxed enough to hit the target.

I agree with Josh -- Elk Hair Caddis is a fine pattern and will catch fish. There are tons of variations, too. Size, wing color, body color, head style, variations with hackle. Then there's the X-Caddis, which, to put it very simply, is a an Elk Hair Caddis with no hackle and a tail of dacron or something similar to imitate the nymphal shuck of an emerging adult. Basically, if you can tie the Elk Hair Caddis, you've by definition got the X-Caddis down, too. They're very effect during big hatches. I also agree with you -- they're kinda hard to get just right. I still have problems getting the proportions of the wing to look just like the pictures in the books. They're either too sparse or they lay down too flat or they're too bushy. About every other one gets a passing grade and I'm really proud of about one in four that I tie. If there's any way at all that you could manage to watch an experienced fly tier tie a few of these (demo, friend, class, video) it will help a lot.

Have you thought about any midge nymphs? I've been tying and using the Zebra Midge lately and having some success. The material needs are not too drastic -- you need some small (#18 - 22) hooks, red and/or black thread, fine silver or gold wire, and beads for heads. Very simple to tie:

Brassies and other Chironomid patterns are deadly effective at this time of year in the west, too. The materials for those are likewise very simple, and in a couple months, they'll be less effective than they are right now.

Fishing in the Great Smokey Mountain National Park, TN?

Im' taking some kids fishing in the Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge area and would like to get some advice on tackle. I understand you can't use live bait (organic) and can only use single hook lures/flies.

I don't know that area at all, although I certainly wish I did, but where I'm used to fishing there are a lot of rivers like this ( meaning that you can't use live bait), and most of these rivers are broken down into different sections that are designated for specific types of fishing. So my point being that maybe you just heard about the rules for one section of this river, It may be a catch and release area or a fly fishing only section or something like that, and there may be another section of the same river that you may use live bait with, again I'm not sure of that area, but it could be worth a call or two to find out.
Hopefully you can find an area like this as teaching a kid to fish is best with a big ol' juicy nightcrawler, Good luck and good for you for taking a kid fishing.

Fishing has grown to become much of professions just as it's an occupation to many people. People catch fish and other varieties of marine products for food as much as means of earning livelihood.

People invest in fishing because it has proven to a worthy venture that pays back. The invest lots of cash on purchase of gears and equipments. The do all this to improve and enhance the fishing, because fishing has become business to them.

To other folks, mostly the adventure lovers and extroverts, fishing is much of a sport as much as it's a game. They fish for fun and relaxation. They derive fun from fishing because it gives them mental peace and tranquility.

The Bass fly fishing is the kind of fishing that involves the use of man-made fly. It is very different from the customary methods of fishing used by fly fishers, where they cast hooks with bits of feather, foam, yarn or fur attached or some similar kind of material to create what is referred to as a fly as compared to using worms or some other kind of bait.

The so called pro bass fishing is similar to the common fly-fishing that we know. Their difference is that pro bass fishing involves a professional in the activity of fishing. Most of these are people well respected in their specific line of fishing activity. They are considered experts because of their devotion and much love in the fishing game inclusive of their contributions.

Of all these types of fly fishing, the widely known and the most standard of them all is the dry fly fishing. This one involves a fisherman using man-made fly, which when cast, it floats on the water. This artificial fly will pass over the fish and entice it to make an effort and grab it. The fisherman will then use his skills to prevent the fish from escaping, until it gets tired and he can retrieve it from the water with the landing net.

Many fishermen prefer this kind of fly fishing, because all the activity is visible - the fisherman casts on the fish he can observe, the fly is visible to him on the water surface and he can easily see as the fish bites the fly. The disadvantage of this fishing method is that trout's and some other fish type tend to do their feeding in the lower depths of the water and cannot be easily caught using this type dry fishing method.

The other type of fly fishing is the so called the nymph fishing. This one involves the nymphs that hatch from eggs that flies lay in the rivers or lakes, these nymphs come to the water surface to and hatch into flies. Nymph fishing therefore utilizes the imitation of these nymphs that are specially created so that they float in water. This type of fly fishing is often considered tricky.

Bass fly fishing has grown to be largely popular game, and many anglers will tell you that it not simply about catching fish. Don't be surprised that some fishermen even consider fly fishing as some type of religion, an regard it a soothing leisure that can be enjoyed by all types of people. It also seems to be more environmentally friendly, because it is not harmful to fish as compared to other fishing techniques and majority of anglers release their catch.

Need help..Fly fishing equipment etc.?

I fly fished in New Mexico and i really enjoyed it. In fact, im trying to save up to get the proper equipment, cause im just starting. I just need some advice on what type of equipment i should get and maybe some tips. I would also appreciate it greatly if you could explain what some of the accesories do.... like retractors, scientific angler fly floatant, leader straighteners, and strike indicators do etc.

I am assuming you are talking trout. My advice for larger western rivers would be to go with a 9' 5wt rod of moderate fast to fast action

Orvis makes a full line-up of rods ranging from the Clearwater starting at $169 to the ZG Helios - upwards of $755. They are 4 piece rods. The nice thing about Orvis is that you can choose the action of the rod - they make their rods from full flex (trout bum series) to mid-flex and tip flex in all their other series, and are covered by a 25 year warrantee.

Loomis flyrods are generally fast action. You can spend $660 for a GLX, $300 for a GL3 (which is old technology ) or now they have a new series for beginners called the Neptune - for $215 all are 4 piece rods

Sage makes great fly rods - Introductory rods include the Sage Launch ( I bought one of these for my daughter) which is a medium fast action rod and not too expensive and casts well at $250 and the Sage Flight which is a fast action introductory rod for $280.
You can step up to a Z-Axis for for about $630
All are 4 piece rods

There are others to consider that are not as expensive
Echo makes a great casting rod (called the Carbon) for under $200 that is terrific, check out www.kmdtackle.com for a great deal on it.
I like this rod ALOT

St. Croix makes some nice value series rods as well, the Triumph series is not bad for $120, but in my opinion, most St. Croix fly rods have a "clunky" feel to them.

Redington (owned by Sage) makes a decent rod for money as well.

Reel: you don't need to break the bank here either.

Depending upon how much cash you want to spend, I would argue
that a Bauer or a Galvan is your best bang for the buck in the $300
world of fly reels

Under $200 it would be hard to argue with a Ross Cimmaron,

Under $150 I would hands down say an Orvis Mid-Arbor

Under $100 I would no doubt say a Cabela's Prestige Plus. I use this reel on occasion for Salmon and Steelhead with no problems at all.

Don't skimp on your flyline - Rio, or Scientific Angler make good value series lines.
You'll need a vest to carry your stuff in. again, you don't have to spend a great deal on one.

You will need the following accesories:
Nippers - for trimming your leader and clipping the tag end from your fly
Floatant: I prefer Aquel for larger flies and Frogs Fanny for smaller flies
Leader Straightners - don't bother, use your fingers
Hemostats for removing hooks
Polarized Sunglasses
Indicators - leave them at home until you learn the proper technique.

A good book such as "Fly Fishing, Learn form a Master" by Bill Mason
would help out alot with equipment selection, knots, techniques, casting and how to read water.

Some Basic Dry Fly patterns:

Adams - parachute or not is your choice. Imitates a wide variety of mayflies

Elk Hair Caddis - take this in tan and olive anywhere and you'll catch fish

Blue Wing Olive - This is the most common hatch and is year round.
often time this fly will produce a strike when nothing else will

Stimulator - Imitates a big stonefly or a grasshopper or it just gets a trouts attention, works well near dusk or at first light

Wulff Pattern - Au Sable or Royal - possibly the best choice when fishing fast water because they float very well - also great for using as
as part of a "dry and dropper" rig

Tan Comparadun - Wil imitate March Browns, Grey Foxes, and any other tan/brown mayfly, also a good searching pattern

Rusty Spinner - simply a "go to " fly, needed for almost every spinnerfall

Black ant, cinamon ant, beetle - you always need some terrestrials in your arsenal - these 3 choices are staples.

Griffiths gnat - indespensable for when they are feeding on midges, and other micro-flys
