Best Fly Fishing Rod

When fly fishing, it helps out tremendously to have quality equipment.  Although you do not have to have the best of everything to be successful, it certainly helps if you have a rod, reel and line that go well together and made out of high grade materials.  In the last 20 years, fly rods have improved immensely as the fly rod manufactures compete to build the "Best Fly Fishing Rod" on the market as devoted fly fishermen are willing to part with large sums of money in order to have top notch gear.  So the big question is: What is "The Best Fly Fishing Rod".

Any experienced fly fisherman will tell you that there really isn't one specific rod that could be considered the best fly rod.  You see, there are so many different species and different sized fish in the world that there is no way for one rod to be the perfect rod for all fish.  That is exactly why choosing a fly rod is so difficult because there is a huge spectrum of applications and a large number of rod makers trying to build a better rod.

In your quest to find the best fly fishing rod, there are certain aspects that should be considered.  Size, Action, and quality (price) are the three big ones and what we will cover in this article.

Size

The first thing we need to do is figure out what size of rod you will need.  If you are presenting small dry flies to trout, then you will want a light rod with a delicate presentation.  If you are planning on targeting Rooster Fish in the ocean, then obviously the same rod that you use for trout is probably not going to cut it.  There are different sized rods designed for different sized fish and different situations.  Here is a generic list of rod weights and the fish they are designed to fight.

2wt    small trout, pan fish
4wt    trout, pan fish
6wt    bass, trout,
8wt    steelhead, bass, saltwater
10wt    salmon, steelhead, tuna, saltwater
12wt     saltwater, dorado, sail fish
14wt    saltwater, sail fish, marlin, shark

Obviously there are extremes in most cases, so your individual fly rod needs may differ a bit.

Action

A Fly rod works by throwing line instead of a lure.   It does so by bending and loading up energy to cast the line back and forth.   That is why fly fishing rods can get quite expensive and why quality is so important.  The "Action" of a rod is the term that signifies at what point the rod bends.  There are 3 main types of rod Action: Slow, Medium, Fast.  A rod can also fall somewhere in between actions and be called a combination of the two such as Medium Fast.  Here is a list of the main action types and how they bend:

•    Fast Action: rod bends mostly at the tip.  Built for high line speed good for long casts, accuracy, wind conditions, and casting large flies. These rods are best suited for experienced casters as they are difficult to learn with.

•    Medium Action: rod bends in the mid section of the rod.  This is the easiest rod to cast but will lack the distance and accuracy of faster action rods.

•    Slow Action: whole rod bends when casting.  Made for small streams and short casts.

While Medium Action rods are easiest to cast, if you are a beginner looking for the best fly rod, then you will probably want to go with a medium fast action as eventually you will want to be able to make those longer cast and through heavier flies.

Quality

Quality and price are synonymous with each other.  You will have a hard time finding one that is not the other.  I will tell you one thing though, while there is a huge difference between a set up and 0 rod, the difference between a 0 and 0 is not near as significant but there still is a difference.  When it comes to all fly fishing gear, you will get what you pay for.  My number one rule of thumb is always go with the best fly fishing rod that you can afford.  Number two would be to make sure all fly rod purchases come with a lifetime warranty.  That way you will make an investment designed to last a lifetime and know that you are buying a quality fly fishing set up.

So, what is the Best Fly Fishing Rod?

To answer this, you will have to look at your situation including when, where, and what you are to be fishing for, as well as your experience level.  A good place to refine your search is at www.OnlineFlyFishingGuide.com.  Here you will be able to figure out the size, type, and price range you are after and apply that to figuring out the exact brand, make and model of what is to become your own"Best Fly Fishing Rod".

Search the yahoo search engine on this site for questions relating to fly fishing outfits- there are hundreds, most of them asking the exact same thing as you with the same budget range. Most of them are recent and suggest what line ratings to get and have links to outfits on cabelas, bass pro shops and KMD tackle.

Tips on selecting the best fly fishing vest

If you want to take up fly fishing there are a few accessories and pieces of equipment you will need, one item you should look at purchasing is a good quality fly fishing vest.

The fly fishing vest plays an important part in your ability to enjoy fly fishing, there are numerous types and styles of vest for you to choose from on the market today. By doing some research online and checking out the types of vests available helps you to make an informed decision on which one would be best for you, here you can find a few tips to help you make this decision.

TIP one-------- Before making your decision on which vest to buy think of where you are going to be fishing and what the weather conditions are like, in hot conditions you should look for a vest that is breathable these are called mesh vests. If the weather is going to be very cold where you fish, you should make sure that the vest you buy is big enough for you to get extra layers of clothing underneath it to help keep you warm.

TIP two ------- You should check to see how many pockets the fly fishing vest has on it, this is important to help you store your extra equipment when fly fishing. Buying a vest with different sized pockets is also a good idea, fly lines, fly boxes, fly reels, all come in different shapes and sizes and you need some where to keep them safe when fishing.

TIP three ------- Fly fishing vests with zip style pockets can be a problem sometimes as the zip can seize up and make it difficult to open with one hand, so look for a good quality vest that has the Velcro style fastener this makes much easier to open with one hand when fly fishing.

TIP four ------- Try to get a vest that is as lightweight as possible, once you start to add your equipment it will start to get heavier and make it less comfortable when fishing for long periods of time. Also try to make sure your fly fishing vest has a ring fastener on the back for your fly fishing net, this is important to keep the net out of the way when casting and makes it easy for you to gain access the net when you are landing your fish.

TIP five ------- If you are going to be wading when fly fishing you should consider the length of the fly fishing vest, you do not want the vest trailing in the water and allowing the water in to the pockets, this can lead to your fishing equipment getting wet and spoiling it. So if you are  wading when fly fishing then try to get a vest that is as short as possible, it can make all the difference to your fly fishing enjoyment.

I hope these five tips have helped you to make an informed decision on choosing the right fly fishing vest for your fishing experience, having the right fly fishing equipment when fishing makes it a much more enjoyable experience for this great outdoor sport.

Fly Fishing Gear: How To Purchase Inexpensive But Perfect Fishing Gear

Many fly fishing enthusiasts around the country spend a lot of money of their fly fishing gears that they end of eroding their bank account just to get the latest gear. This should not be the case. Although having the best fly fishing gear is good, one should never go broke on these things.

If you are one of those people who have been spending a lot of money of their fly fishing gear, it is time for you to take another look at your spending habits. Even if you have some money stashed away in the bank, it is not a good idea to be extravagant especially in these times of economic crisis. To help you save some money on your fly fishing gears, here are some pointers for you.

Buy Only The Things That You Need

A lot of people waste money on things that they do not really need. If you are one of those impulsive shoppers who tend to buy things that catch their attention while shopping, you better curb you impulses. Buying things on impulse is not a good idea. Besides, you don't want to end up kicking yourself for wasting your money on something that you cannot hope to use in the near future.

Since you cannot expect to use every available fly fishing gear in a single fishing trip, you might as well just buy what you need and save some money. List down all the things that you will use during your fishing trip and then find out which of these fly fishing gears are already in your possession.

Buy only the things that you do not have yet and do away with those expendable things. If you must buy them, buy only what you need. A lot of your extra leaders, flies and lines will end up decorating your closet anyway so you might as well not buy them in bulk. This way, you get to save some money and at the same time prevent your closet from being cluttered with a lot of things that you do not even need.

Buy Rod And Reel Combination

If you are beginner, you should start by buying discount fly fishing gears like those rod and reel combination. Not only will you be able to save a lot of money on rod and reel combo, you also get to save yourself from all the trouble of trying to find matching rod and reel in different places.

Fly Fishing and The Right Equipment!

When fly fishing you need a calm temperament, be able to switch off and keep repeating the same technique without getting frustrated. This is half the battle, the other half is the right equipment. Of coarse you need sun glasses so you do not have to squint from the sun and maybe a hat but most importantly the tackle makes all the difference.

When choosing a rod, should you go for a modern composite graphite rod or an old fashioned bamboo rod? Should you choose a rod for one particular water or setting or go with a multi purpose rod. All these factors will come into the equation when choosing a rod to cast your flies. Talking of flies, this is another area where choice is important. Do you go for a dry fly or go for an insect replica. The colour of the fly could also be important, is there a colour for morning and a different one for night.
Another thing to think about is weather you want to learn how to tie your own flies or are you better off buying them already done.

The choice of rod and fly could also affect the decision as to what line you will use.
The type of line you use may be also be influenced by what fish you are fishing for, larger fish will need a heavier line as appose to smaller fish. You will have to decide on weather you want your line to float or sink, weather your fish feed on the surface or on the bottom.

Some anglers are quite happy to use a bomber or swim feeder, just cast their line out and relax on the riverbank and wait. Fly fishing on the other hand is much more a hands on approach; you need to be fully concentrated on the task ahead of you. Tackle decisions can make the difference between having a fantastic day and having a ordinary day.

Most fly fishermen take it very seriously; it takes patience, dedication and practice to become a good fly fisherman. Choosing the right rod can be very tricky, with lots of different people having different ideas. Below are a few choices to help you.

Fibreglass- A large number of rods these days are made from fibreglass, whether they are for fly fishing or regular fishing. The main downside of fibreglass rods is that they are heavier than graphite or bamboo rods which in turn could make your arm tired at the end of the day. Despite this they are able to take a lot of punishment which makes them a popular choice.

Bamboo- Many of the older fishermen will not here a bad word said about these rods. Of coarse this is just someones opinion, but they were one of the first rods to be made and are still being made today. There is a lot that goes into making a bamboo rod and for this reason they can tend to be one of the most expensive.

Graphite- These tend to be quite stiff but that does not mean they are not effective.
These rods give good flexibility and are quite strong. they give good performance and they can vary in price difference and quality.

Reels are another important piece of equipment, the abel fly reel is considered one of the best around. A lot of parts are interchangeable from one reel to another making this a good choice. Also it does not matter if you are left or right handed as they can be converted easily from one to another.
