In fly fishing, flies are generally divided into four types of artificial flies. (Flies are also called lures in some countries.)

They are:

1       Dry flies

2 Wet flies

3 Nymphs

4 Streamers

The categories of flies can cross into each other.  There are no real strict guidelines for classifying the flies as depending on the countries, traditions of terminology.  (Some anglers also classify emerges as another category of flies. These sit partially underneath the surface and partially on top of the water, imitating things like newly emerging mayflies.)

Dry flies
sit on the top of the water.  They imitate insects sitting on the surface like mayflies, midges, caddis flies, beetles, grasshoppers, spiders and spinners to name a few types. They can be fished still, drifting with the current or wind, or fished with small twitches or rapid pulls. Using dry flies can be exhilarating experience as you can see the fish strike the fly.   Dries are used seasonally in lakes and rivers and are generally effective when fish are actively feeding on insects on top of the water.  Dry flies are normally made of light buoyant materials or are tied with hackles that help the fly sit on the water surface.  A floatant spray or gel is applied to the dry fly to make it buoyant.  A couple of false casts will also help dry it.

Wet flies
as the name suggest that the fly is fished in the water, either.  The flies can imitate small baitfish, leeches, frogs, crawdad's and swimming insects.  Wets can be fished just under the surface with dead drifts, slow twitches up to fast retrieves.  Some times a take will occur as the fly is sinking.  For getting wets deep down, weighted or bead heads are effective, especially when combined with intermediate or sinking fly lines.

Nymphs
are a very effective and a common world wide food source in rivers and lakes.  Nymphs can be fished on the drop, drifting, and slow to medium retrieves, either just under the surface or deep down. They imitate the underwater stage of insects like mayfly nymphs, stoneflies and damselfly nymphs. A good portion of a trout’s diet consists of nymphs in most seasons and waters. A long leader and tippet is effective for nymphing, especially in clear or over fished waters.

Streamers are bigger wet flies imitating baitfish like minnows, sculpins and bigger appetizing food.  Streamers usually work best near the bottom and are generally quickly retrieved for salmon, bigger trout and also for saltwater fish. Bigger flies like streamers, may also result in a bigger catch, although don’t be surprised when your four inch streamer lands a small twelve inch trout.  Artificial streamers can be colorful and have a mixture of assorted fly tying materials.

Dry flies, wets, nymphs and streamers are all effective in the right environment. The secret to getting the most out your fishing is to use different techniques and test all the time. Don’t be afraid to try different types of flies and patterns, especially if the fishing is slow. So no matter what country you live in and regardless of how you classify your flies, just make sure you have various types of flies to cover all fly fishing conditions and fish. Now you are ready to catch the big one!

Trout Fly Line

i have just started fly fishing and i am after a good intermediate line?

which make is best and where do i buy it from.....ps. i am trout fishing in sheffield, yorkshire and not salmon in canada!!!

Hi I have tried quite a few different makes of fly lines and personally I find the Cortland range very good and if you want a very good clear intermediate I would go go the 333 Pro Clear one as its a good beginner's line which is easy to cast. it comes in w/f 6,7,8 and costs around the £34.00 mark, I know its not the cheapest but I find it a very good line for small / medium sized still waters and you can buy them through most retail outlets including the mail order ones but if you shop around you can get some very good deals, I fish mainly Rutland, Grafham, Ravensthorp, and waters like Lechlade and Elinor and I don't have many problems with it including little to no line memory.
I hope you find one you like and carry on fishing oh and by the way if you ever get a chance to do some float tubing then do it as its the most fun you can have with a pair of chest waders on !!!!! especially when you catch a 2lb trout and it tows you round the lake !

Fly Tying Beads
Calling all fly tiers.......?

Whats YOUR favorite way to add weight to the flies you tie. With some many things on the market i wanted to know what was the most popular...lead wire, tungsten bead head, ceramic heads, brass bead heads.... the list goes on. Which method do YOU use the most?
One way to add weight to a nymph is to add a lead split shot infront of the hook eye when tying, it works great for deeper water nymphs and is very simple, the color is not too bright either. Give it a go, works great on river patterns.

I use lead wire unless I am wanting to tie a fly specifically with a bead head, or a fly with "eyes", in which case use the tiny led "dumbells" and paint eyes on the ends.

Lead wire is the best to use when you want to hide the weight you are adding. With other methods, you must incorporate the weight (bead, etc.) into the fly design.

Fly Tying: Bead Head Prince Nymph

Fly Tying Beads

Bead Head

Anyone here who uses TIGI Bead Head Shinie Junkie?

I just bought it a few days ago.
My problem is that I don't know how to get it out of the can/bottle.
It says on the back of the can 'Lightly press out a dab and run hands through hair'.
There is this white plastic hollow cylindrical stick on top. It has 4 sort of 'turrets' at the top which are really thin. It's basically a tube which is split into four at the end which won't press down or anything. It is stuck firmly onto the bottle, you can see clearly that is doesn't press down!

So I would really appreciate a detailed instruction on what to do - without breaking the can of course : ) Thanks in advance.

have you tried pressing higher up on the nozzle like you would for whipped cream

Bead Head

I have fished Montana for over four decades and even have had conversations with legend Bud Lilly. I have fished with the author who completed George Brook's final book, Rand Oslund. I've fished the Gallatin, Madison, Jefferson, Missouri, Big Horn, Smith River, Yellowstone, spring creeks, creeks in Yellowstone National Park and pretty much everywhere in the State, including several high mountain lakes.

Of course, these are all very good secrets, but some of these secrets I'm just going to have to keep to myself. Consider this a test taste of some of the fine trout fishing locations in central Montana and north central Wyoming. There are many more, but that would require a book, stories and more detail.

There is a beautiful Red Lodge, Montana real estate development called the Spires at Red Lodge. We came here because it is some of the last, best priced resort real estate in the Rocky Mountain region.

Right through the middle of downtown Red Lodge there is great fishing in the Main fork of Rock Creek early spring, late summer and in the fall (it is a bit high in early summer). Strip black streamers or use stone nymphs like a bitch creek. Bead head nymphs do pretty well, too. There are lot's of small to medium sized rainbows and browns in Rock Creek and the further toward Roberts you go, the bigger the fish get.

Just a 20 minute drive to the west from The Spires at Red Lodge development along U.S. Highway 78 in Red Lodge is Roscoe, Montana home to the Grizzly Bar. Stop there on the way back from fishing, not on the way up. Go about 4 miles out of Roscoe towards East Rosebud Lake until you cross a wooden bridge. You can park there and walk down, or walk up. Dry flies if they are rising and nymphs and streamers if they aren't. Streamers will be more successful on cloudy days.

There is a lake called Arch Lake that is a boulder-strewn 2,500 foot plus hot foot (not trail) hike straight up out of the East Rosebud Valley. There are some monstrous cutthroat in this lake many of them don't see an artificial fly or lure more than once every few years.

Further down the road to the northwest is also some great fishing. If you've got a raft or a kick boat you are going to love the Stillwater River. It is a great April/May and then mid July through October, fishing river and has much less pressure than Montana's western rivers.

In the spring time head 60 miles south to Cody and Newton Reservoir for some great big fish stories. Little flies on top and leeches down below, whatever they are hitting on. The surface activity can be a ball. Try the far side in waders all the way away from the parking lot and wade out in the weeds.

The legendary Bighorn is only about 90 minutes from downtown Red Lodge which makes some of the best tailwater fishing in all of Montana really accessible as a day trip, which is pretty cool.

The Bighorn River is only about 90 minutes away from Red Lodge across the Crow Indian reservation from Pryor, Montana and is probably one of the best tail water damn fisheries in the State, but it is usually quite crowded (I say this tongue in cheek because it is crowded by Westerners standards but not by many others).

South central Montana has some of the best fishing and Red Lodge real estate is some of the most reasonale mountain real estate anywhere in the west. Authentic Victorian mining town in the middle of a recreational Mecca.
