Beginning Fly Fishing

Where is the one that got away?

I was fishing in the weedy backwater of a lake yesterday when I got a big bite next to some lilypads. I began reeling in and got to see the head of a very big bass. Unfortunately, my line snapped and the fish got free just a few steps away from me.
I went for another pole and went back to the same spot and fished it for 2 hours with no other bites.

My question is: In a case like this does the fish go back to the area it was in when it took the bait or does it just fly off to another locale. Is it worth it to fish the same area in the hope of finding the fish again?
I was using a 7inch fake worm.

This happened @ Winchester lake in Ct.
**It was a bass

I've caught some nice bass out of that lake.......
how well did you set the hook? give it a little time to spit the hook out or fall out.....

there is no guarantee that he will be back but keep in mind the structure/weed-bed area and look for similar structure

Our goal is to bring the best technology in reels to any given price point. We?ve now addressed the important $100+ price point with Konic. Please read on to find out what makes Konic a better reel than any other comparably priced alternative. When designing the Konic, we started with one given: to incorporate the same fully sealed conical drag system and stainless steel roller clutch used in our high-end reels. The drag system in Konic uses the same fully machined parts, made of the same materials, and to the same specifications, as the drag used in the $400+ Waterworks reels or any of our other high-end reels. This is the principal benefit of the Konic versus competitive reels. What other $100+ reel can say that it shares proven drag technology with a $400+ reel? In order to deliver this expensive drag in a low-priced reel we are die casting the frame and spool. But this is no low-end die casting. This is Pressure Casting with molten ALDC12 aluminum allo... In view of the wide research done in fly fishing the number of fly fishing rod types in the market are quite large and you have a great choice and brand names. The first aspect you have to consider is the weight and duty for which you are purchasing the fishing rod. They are generally available in gradations from 1 to 9 depending on their weight. Lower the numbers lower the weight and so on. The cast line is directly proportional to the fly rod weight and this is an important parameter.

Significant features of a Fly Fishing Rod

The topic of choosing the most appropriate fishing rod that you can use in fly fishing can be quite complicated and you need to logically understand the various features that are to be considered in the course of your choice. It is imperative to have the basic date on what the fishing rod is being used for in terms of the fish species and the waters where you will sport for those kinds of fish. Finally one needs to stipulate the amount worth spending for all this gear in order to satisfy one\'s craving for this sport.

The Fishing Rod

The most important feature of the fishing rod is its flexural characteristics. It is designated as slow to fast and you should try to understand this concept before purchasing a rod. The amateurs who have just started fly fishing need to begin with medium or medium-fast action rods and graduate on to more sophisticated construction as you gain more experience. It invariably depends on the aptitude of the angler and only a general guide line can be given since the feel and strength control of casting vary from person to person.

What is your Fish?

The type of fish is all important to determine the quality of your fishing rod. Remember that the general maxim is to equate the weight of the fish to the weight of the fishing rod. Mostly it is useful to use light to medium heavy fishing gear for many common fish. Always consult an expert or information on the Internet on the data pertaining to fish and fishing rod relationship.

Fishing Location and your Fishing Rod

The fishing rods depend also on the waters that you encounter for the particular species of fish. The dynamics of the ponds, lakes or rivers ascertain the weight of the casting rod and so does the climatic conditions at different times of the year. Mild conditions and medium fish require light to medium heavy fishing rods whilst severe climatic variations or high water current needs heavier varieties.

Cost is always important!

Quality and cost never blend and one must find a good relationship by generalization technique. The common or let us say popular St. Croix Fly Fishing rod is quite suitable for most of the angler\'s needs. If you have more to spend then go in for the more expensive rods that will give you additional features and efficiency. It is your passion for trout that will determine your attraction to a particular fly fishing rod!

Fishing reels have two classifications: the fixed spool reels and the conventional reels. Fixed spool reels are immobile. Conventional reels, on the other hand, feature spools that revolve and are commonly used in saltwater fishing. These are further divided into three varieties: spinning, spincasting and baitcasting.

Baitcasting Reels
This is a small and conventional type. It can easily fit into an angler's while mounted on a fishing rod. This is used mainly for a bigger catch. Baitcasting reels are excellent because of their sensitivity to movement by the fishing line's end but they are inaccessible to ultralight lines sizes as well as with “backlash” tangles. Learning how to use this method is actually a bit difficult. People who use this are mostly professionals or very skilled already.

Spinning Reels
Spinning reels are the most commonly used these days. It has a fixed spoon reel that has housing along its stationary spool parallel to the axis of the rod, spinning around it when the handle is turned.

When using a spinning reel, a casting technique called “spinning” is produced. However, since the spool is set and fixed, having a backlash is one thing you will never encounter. This type is available from ultralight up to medium-heavy sizes. They are also less sensitive as compared to Baitcasting reels. They are also bulky because of their large size, along with the bait and heavy lure attached to it.

Spincasting Reels
This is featured as a combination of stationary and conventional reels. Spincasting reels are angler friendly and are more advisable for beginners. Even children may easily use it because of the simple push-button mechanism. Hence it is also alternatively called pushbutton reels.
It is the least sensitive among the three types. This is as far as movement along the end of the line is concerned. As a negative feedback, you cannot fully control the fish and the luring of the fish, resulting to poor Spincasting.

Fly fishing is a tricky way of catching fish. Before you visit a store to buy a fly rod, take these things into consideration. These are very important factors in fly fishing, so read carefully. The first thing to keep in mind is the kind of fish you will be catching. In general, the heavier the fish, the heavier the equipment will be needed.

The second factor you need to think about is the body of water you plan to fish. For example, is it going to be a babbling brook, and a roaring river? The motion of the water is not the only thing to pay attention to. You also need to consider the clearness of the water, the wind and the distance you will need to cast to catch your fish.

Finally, you must take into account the action of the fly fishing rods. They are made to flex; and they do it in different ways. They can be slow or fast. It is crucial to get the feel of the rod. If you are a beginner, a rod somewhere in the medium range would be the best option.

Experienced anglers, who have been enjoying fishing for many years, typically have quite a few different fly rods. Each rod is designed to do a particular job. The size of the different rods is represented by a number. The larger the number the larger the rod. It also represents the line to be cast. For instance, a 3-weight rod can cast a 3-weight line.

Always keep in mind that the rod is just a continuation of your arm. It is the line that gets cast not the rod. You also need to take into account the weight of the fly. If the fly is too heavy the line will sag and will not cast as desired.

An additional feature to care about when buying a rod is the flexibility or the action of the rod. If you get a fast action rod, expect that only about 30% of the rod will bend. On the other hand, a slow action rod will bend about 90%. A medium action will bend about 60%. The slow action rod bends much easier than a fast action rod. However, the fast action rod casts farther than a slow action rod.

Today's best fly rods are made of the graphite. The introduction of the graphite enables the production of the faster action rods. These rods are not heavy and use more of the tip to project the fly line. The rod will do all the work for you if the line is cast properly. It is one of the biggest benefits of the fast action rod - the fisherman casting does less work.

In the end. Never buy a rod that you have not cast first.

There is nothing more relaxing and enjoyable than to go fishing. To have a bountiful catch, you need a good boat. Check out these superb inflatable fishing kayak. Also, cold feet forces people to stop fishing. This is sad because it really is not necessary with heated boot insoles. With them, you can fish all day even in very cold waters.

What exactly is a scud?

Hi, in fly fishing, there is a fly called a 'scud'. there are lots of different ones, actually. i see them everywhere (in the stores I mean), but what do they immitate in the water? is there a thing called a scud in the water? are there spin fishing lures that imitate them...? do they catch fish? when would you use one????

they imitate fresh water shrimp, the real thing is hard to see but they are around, you'll usually find them in shallow water with little to no current and next to cover (weeds, reeds ect) in still water they will be suspended in the water in rivers they tend to be in the cover and toward the bottom. really more of a lake bug but they are in rivers too. scuds can actually pass for several other things if the fish aren't being to selective (uncased caddis, dobson fly).

I've used them when I've run out of caddis nymphs, usually clipped the legs off though. I use them is slow runs, usually suspended below an indicator next to weed beds, they'd be good for lakes and ponds but I don't really fish them very much, rivers are more my thing. and yes they catch fish as long as that is what the fish are eating and you present them correctly.

Does anyone know of a UK retailer for inflatable pontoon fishing boats?

I've seen a lot of these dual-hulled inflatable pontoon boats used in America for fly fishing and i'm interested in getting one for my father's birthday.

They're also know as catarafts i think or as a variation of float tubes. They have two inflatable bladders with a seat suspended between and a bar to rest your feet on and they make great inflatable fishing boats. I can see plenty for sale in the US but none in the UK.

Are there any businesses out there shipping these to the UK?

Hi, if you visit www.pontoonboats.co.uk you will find the boats you are looking for.
We, Highland Ventures Ltd are the sole UK importers of the range of Classic Accessories Pontoon Boats and float tubes and have appointed a number of distributors in Scotland, where you can buy these boats. If you check out the website you will find further details including the addresses of distributors, pictures of the boats in action and all the relevant info you may require. They are very reasonably priced and we are sure your Father will be very appreciative if he receives one for his birthday!

Rods for Fly Fishing Beginners: Choosing the Right Ones

Fly fishing has basic gears, one of them is rods. There are many fly fishing rods, especially in sports shops. These seem to be overwhelming for beginners. There are a few things to consider when buying your first rod.

 Budget

This is a primary concern. There are fishing rods that can range for just below 100 dollars going up. The main consideration is that you find the ones that can last. It would be better to buy more expensive one that can last, than a cheap one that you would need to replace often.

Most seasoned anglers would actually advise you to go to specific brand shops, this is to avoid buying a rod that is of poor quality. This would also ensure that you get to have clerks who know about their products. Most of them can help you decide on the fishing rod for beginners. Such shops also have longer warranties.

 Length

Length of the rods can range from four up to eighteen feet. There are actually many uses for the varying lengths. Often enough, beginners are advised to take a longer rod. Now, longer would entail buying an eight to eight and a half rod. This can also vary for female anglers. Most of the time a seven and a half is recommended. At the same time, the length of the rod can also depend upon your height.

 Action

This is slightly complex. Action is how much bending can a rod take. There are three categories, fast, medium and slow. To avoid breaking and soft spots, beginners often take the medium action. This would help keep you from breaking the fish. If there are some available people to give you a crash course on casting, it is advisable that you take such.

Fish

The type of fish can also be a great consideration on which beginner fishing rod to take. The rods can determine whether you are ready to catch what type of fish. At the same time, this can also determine where you should go that you can get the best out of your fly fishing rod. Whether you would like to catch trout or other types of fish, make sure that you do have the right type of rods as well as the other fishing gears.

 Fly Fishing Site

The places where you would be going can also influence the type and built of rod that you are going to buy. This goes hand in hand with the fish species you are expecting to catch. The site sometimes also determines the length of the rod. The tighter the space, the shorter the rods to be used to make sure that you do not tangle on anything.

All other considerations when finding the perfect rods always boils down to one, you. You decide on the grip and the comfort level of the rod. All other considerations are guides, but at the end of the day, you decide which best fits into your hands and what you think should be your rod. After all, you would be spending the time with your sage fly fishing rod.

Autumn Vacation at Breckenridge

When the blazing summertime sun slowly cools as autumn approaches, Breckenridge, Co has a good deal more to offer aside from just counting down the days till you break in your new skis. Sure, activities like white water rafting, fly fishing and sun tanning that needs warmer days may likely dwindle as the air gets nippy but that doesn't mean one should abandon outdoorsy activities completely. Colorado can never rival the gloriously famous fall foliage of the plains of New England and along the Midwest, but there is certainly an abundance of colorful foliage nonetheless from the wondrous aspen tree.

Aspen trees are abundant in the Northern Hemisphere, extending south at high altitudes in the mountains. Aspen trees inhabit the Rocky Mountains and colonize mountain towns like Breckenridge. The Quaking Aspen, as it is famously known for its tear-shaped leaves of bright green that turns to spectacular tints of red, yellow, and almost gold color. The aspens quaking leaves got their name because of the unusual ability of the leaves to flutter and twist flexibly as the wind passes through it, thus making an equally unusual and intriguing sound. Standing under a cluster of the tree, one would experience a calming feeling, filling the senses with wondrous color of reddish-brown, yellow and gold while they whisper their magical sounds in your ear. It is greatly suggested one should spend as much possible time under these trees. Activities such as an intimate mountain picnic, or reading a favorite book, cloud watching, or just plain old leaves watching are always good excuses to prolong time spent under the magnificent trees. Don’t blink! You just might miss the moment. Like clockwork, mid-September is the perfect time to go and see the trees. Be sure to bring appropriate clothing, it's almost always a guarantee that a snow storm will hit before Halloween comes, as the weather gets colder the sooner it is the trees will loose their leaves. In addition, particularly dry summers make the leaves leave sooner. Nonetheless, aspen trees magnificent leaves never disappoint, the magnificent change will surely happen around this time.
