I'm not sure there's a best website for cheap fly fishing gear. What you should do is set yourself a budget and shop for something withing that limit. Cabela's has fly combos and other gear that is reasonably priced. I generally shoo beginners away from inexpensive fly rod-reel combos because it's hard to have a good experience on poorly made gear. However, one thing I like about Cabela's is that they seem to be making a good-faith effort to carry inexpensive fly fishing gear that has some quality and legacy behind it, as opposed to gear that is just plain cheap. Cabela's also tries hard to offer very gradual price points so that you can come within about $ 25 or so of what you want to spend.

I met a guy in Wyoming just recently who had a Fenwick HMG combo that he was really happy with. It was a combo and he said he paid around $ 250 for it. I'm not sure if this is the same one, but here is a Fenwick HMG combo on sale right now at about $ 80 off the regular price:

Spring Time Fly Fishing Gear Tune-Up - Clean Those Fly Lines

There are an almost endless array of fly lines available, some which cost extraordinary amounts. If you have invested money in a quality line, you will want to ensure that it lasts for as long as possible.

The single most important thing you can do is keep it clean. After each trip, take a little time and rinse your line with soap and water. Stay away from detergents and use a mild handsoap. Detergents tend to dry out the line and could result in your line developing cracks in the outer layer. This of course will hasten damage to the inner core of the line.

For some years, there has been a debate about the use of Armorall® and other similar products. Fly anglers who have used it discovered that it seemed to make their lines slicker. Others I have talked to have suggested that this is just a short term advantage and over time the chemicals in Armorall® will damage lines with regular use. I am not a chemist, and neither have I conducted any personal studies on the matter so I can't advise you one way or the other. Bob Kloskowski of the International Fly Fishing Association interviewed Bruce Richards of Scientific Anglers and asked him specifically about using Armorall®. Here is what Richards had to say on the matter:

"Armorall and 333 contain some plasticizers and lubricants and will lubricate the lines surface, temporarily. They also contain a small amount of detergent that theoretically would reduce line life, but the affect would be minimal. These products can be used without noticeable negative affect, but the positive affect of lubrication is very short term as the product washes off quickly." - 1997 Interview on NBC

Before you do head out for the first time this season, you might want to inspect your fly fishing lines for signs of cracking or even cuts. I remember some years ago, while casting on a windy day and getting into one of those cursed tangles where my leader caught my line and discovering that the leader had actually cut through the outer layer of the line. I was still able to fish the line that day, but replaced it before the next trip out.

Regardless of what sort of dressing you use on your line, the main thing is to keep it clean! Your fly line(s) is a very important part of your fly fishing gear.

I've bought quite a lot of fly fishing stuff online, but I've never really bought something "blind." That is, I've never researched a major purchase online and bought it unless I've at least looked at it and handled it in a store. I've always picked what I wanted (a rod or reel or whatever) by trying it out first at a store or by borrowing a friend's, then purchasing online. Online sellers can often offer bigger selections and better prices than brick-and-mortar shops. While I try to support my local retailers, sometimes you've got to go online to get what you want at the best price.

I think I've looked at classicflyfishing.com a time or two but have never bought anything there. I've heard praise for those Hardy reels but they're a little out of my price range -- I'm not sure I've ever even seen one. So far I've had no trouble catching fish on reels in the $ 100 price range, but if that's what your dad wants and you're going to get him one, all I can say is -- you're a very good son. Heh.

Selecting the Best Fly Fishing Gear for Your Needs

Vests and Waders

A Net to Finish of Reeling in Your Catch

A net is also vital when it comes to your fly fishing gear.  A net is essential when there are only a few feet left when reeling in your catch; this is where anglers commonly lose a fish.  When the line is slack you will need to get that fish in the net as soon as possible lest the line snap or the fish yank out the hook from the line.  Nets included in a fly fishing gear are usually smaller than your typical net.  This is because fly fishermen like to keep them attached to their vest or waders with a D-clip or hook.  Newer models of nets have magnets which you can easily snap in place and have them handy whenever you need it. 

When shopping for your fly fishing gear, take your time, ask the retail assistant, ask your friends, and you will make the right decision.
