If someone commits suicide by shooting themselves in the head, do they drop the gun or hold on to it in death?

Does our grip immediately loosen in death or do we squeeze tightly if we're holding onto something? I'm writing a story and this is relevant to how things will progress.

Both can happen.

There is a condition known as cadaveric spasm, where a body will grip tightly to something at the moment of death, and is usually tied in with intense emotion (e.g. drowning victims who were alive when they were tossed into the water can often grip the reeds, bank etc). This is rare, though. It usually persists through rigor mortis so the body will remain its hold on the gun, for example, until decomposition begins and the hands relax.

The other option is that when the body goes slack at the moment of death, the gun could be dropped.

Both can happen although dropping the gun is more likely.
