Is there an arc from high voltage item when no closed circuit to other side? eg flying bird and 500 kv line?
My question is exactly whether a flying bird gets hit by an arc from a 500 kv line if the bird gets close- eg 15 cm. My theory - yes, since the 30kv/cm gradient is exceeded. Similar to lightning/aircraft or person/ground in dry air on a carpet (winter in Canada). Since a circuit is not completed the energy transfer will consist of the floating object trying to reach the charge of the source. BUt numerous pople in transmission line indestry and bird people tell me no - based on their anectdotal experience.
The fault in your reasoning:
You assume that the bird is at 0 potential. Unless he is connected to ground, that is not the case. He won't have to absorb much charge at all to be equipotential to the wire, so he can just fly right by. He can even land on it if he wants to.
